Friends and colleagues have been left reeling today after the death of rising star Charlbi Dean from a sudden illness, at the age of just 32.

The South African actor starred alongside Woody Harrelson in Triangle Of Sadness, which won the Palme D'Or at Cannes this year and is due to screen at Fantastic Fest later this month. Ruben Östlund, who also appears in the film, said "Charlbi had a care and sensitivity that lifted her colleagues and the entire film crew," and described her death as "a shock and a tragedy."

Dean had also won a fan following for her role as Syonide in the series Black Lightning and appeared in a number of additional films including Don't Sleep, Spud and Blood In The Water. She began a career as a model at the age of just six...

Charlbi Dean’s fiancé Luke Volker thanked people for their kind messages in a video posted to Instagram on Wednesday (31 August).

Black Lightning actor Dean died on Monday (29 August) in New York City of an “unexpected sudden illness”.

In the video, fashion model Volker said: “Hi, everyone. I wanted to just post a picture of Charlbi, but it’s a bit hard.”

The 26-year-old added: “And just wanted to let you know I see all your messages, all the love, and I appreciate it. I really do. It’s just I can’t really reply to them right now. But thank you, guys. I appreciate it. I love you.”

Dean shared news of the couple’s engagement on 8 April on Instagram, sharing a series of photos from the proposal, which, she said, occurred at the same spot in New York where she and Volker shared their first kiss.

Ruben Ostlund, the Swedish director of the Palme d’Or-winning film Triangle of Sadness that should have marked a breakthrough in the career of co-star Charlbi Dean, has posted a touching tribute to the actor-model who died Monday of an undisclosed sudden illness.

“Charlbi’s sudden passing is a shock and a tragedy,” Ostlund writes in an Instagram post today. “It is an honor to have gotten to know and work with her. Charlbi had a care and sensitivity that lifted her colleagues and the entire film crew. The thought that she will not be by our side in the future makes me very sad. At this difficult time, my thoughts go out to her loved ones, her family and her fiance Luke.”

Dean was engaged to be married to her fiancé of three years, actor-model Luke Volker.

Charlbi Dean, the South African actress who turned heads this year with her turn as a fashion model influencer in the Palme d’Or-winning Triangle of Sadness, has died. She was 32.

Dean died Monday at a hospital in New York City after what was described as unexpected sudden illness, her rep told The Hollywood Reporter.

Dean also recurred for two seasons as the assassin Syonide, the surrogate daughter of antagonist Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III), on the CW superhero series Black Lightning.

Dean starred as Yaya opposite Harris Dickinson as Carl in Triangle of Sadness, directed by Sweden’s Ruben Östlund.

Dean died on Monday (29 August) in New York City of an unexpected sudden illness.

Her death was confirmed by Deadline.

Dean is best known for her recurring role as Syonide on the CW’s DC Comics series Black Lightning.

However, most recently, she starred in director Ruben Ostlund’s forthcoming film Triangle of Sadness – alongside Woody Harrelson and Harris Dickinson – marking her first major movie.

She co-led the satire as model Yaya, one of the survivors of a sunken cruise ship who becomes stranded on an island.

While slated for a theatrical release on 7 October in the US, Triangle of Sadness has already won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

It is also an official selection of the 2022 Toronto Film Festival as well as the 2022 New York Film Festival.
