At his Sweet Sixteen party, Will (Matt Lanter) finds his world being rocked when his girlfriend Amy (Vanessa Lachey) breaks up with him and an earthquake hits the city. Worried about the displays at the Natural History Museum where she works, Amy goes over to check them out and becomes trapped when a statue falls on her. She phones Will, and he and three friends—pregnant Juney (Crista Flanagan), his best friend Calvin (), and Calvin's girlfriend Lisa (Kim Kardashian)—attempt to rescue her but are forced to dodge a variety of disasters along the way.
Disaster Movie is based on a script by film-making team Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, known for their parody films.
According to its official website, Disaster Movie features every known natural disaster and catastrophic event—asteroids, twisters, earthquakes, falling cows, etc. The movie is depicted as a "spoof" of trailers for movies (mainly superhero movies), and there are passing references to The Day After Tomorrow (2004) (2004), (1996), Cloverfield (2008) (2008), The Dark Knight (2008) (2008), Armageddon (1998) (1998), Hellboy (2004) (2004), and numerous other superhero movies.
Will, Calvin, and the Enchanted Princess (Nicole Parker) steal a Mach 5 and drive to the museum, where they pull the statue off Amy. Amy gives the crystal skull to Will, and they make their way toward the altar room, battling a nude Beowulf (Ike Barinholtz) along the way. Meanwhile, Calvin is attacked by Kung Fu Panda (Yoshio Iizuka). Calvin knocks out the Panda and kisses the Enchanted Princess, accidentally knocking off her wig to reveal that "she" is a "he". Once inside the altar room, Will and Amy encounter Indiana Jones (Tony Cox), who attempts to return the skull to the altar but fails. Will succeeds instead, and the disasters cease. In the final scenes, Will and Amy are being married by the Guru Shitka (John Di Domenico), and the entire cast breaks into a rousing chorus of "The Dating Song".
Their first parody film was Spy Hard (1996) (1996), which parodies spy films like the James Bond movies. Spy Hard was followed by Scary Movie (2000) (2000), Date Movie (2006) (2006), Epic Movie (2007) (2007), and Vampires Suck (2010) (2010), each one parodying, of course, scary movies, date movies, epic movies, and vampire movies. The Starving Games (2013) (2013) is a parody of The Hunger Games (2012) (2012). See also the pertinent title-search results, Friedberg ⊗ Seltzer.
