Tristan Ruggeri and Teresa Palmer in The Twin (2022)

The Twin

5/10

Variation of common horror theme holds it's own. Better than most.

This film will feel very familiar due to an overused theme (grief). If you can somehow get around that...you may enjoy this. Beautifully filmed (CGI cemetery was weird though) and the acting was solid all around. Atmospheric, but not particularly frightening. Not a fast moving film, but no noticeable filler. I can't think of a reason not to recommend this. Might pair nicely with Wake Wood (2009) for a double feature and exercise in contrast and comparison.

Seen it All Before

My wife and I watched this in Shudder as she's a big Discovery of Witches fan and Teresa Palmer was in this. Unfortunately this was a mash up of several other films, with The Omen, Midsommar and Rosemary's Baby springing to mind, but without being anywhere near as good.

Palmer does a lot of the heavy lifting, and does reasonably well with quite thin material. The reveal was unsatisfactory, with a character basically reading the exposition.

On the whole, added nothing new to the genre.

Ok this reminds me of the movie MOTHER..so confusing

So, here I go...Around the 32min mark I checked to see how much was left and was stunned it had an hour still to go! But I hung in there..indeed I did, went from being a story of grief to batching crazy! I Enjoyed the beginning and I liked the end..it was the middle 50 mins I almost turned off or fell asleep. I'd pass the 5 stars is for 2 female leads.

Meh

First of all, the athmosphere is nice. Teresa Palmer was pretty good as a grieving mother. But the story builds up to a massive let down. They could've skipped the whole Helen crazy woman story, that just feels like a filler afterwards. The kid is annoying, but they usually are in these kind of movies. 5,5/10.

So slow paced it is hardly worth the effort...

I hadn't heard about this 2022 horror movie "The Twin" from writers Aleksi Hyvärinen and Taneli Mustonen prior to sitting down to watch it. I stumbled upon the movie by random chance, and since it was a horror movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I opted to watch it.

The movie's synopsis was adequate, as there is something about twins in horror movies that just have some appeal as in regard of possible spooky storylines. However, the storyline told in "The Twin" was just somewhat mundane and generic. And the slow pacing of the narrative just made it a downright struggle to sit through this movie. While the movie runs at 1 hour and 49 minutes, the slow paced narrative makes it seem closer to three hours.

I found the storyline in "The Twin" to be somewhat without much of any appeal actually, and I have to admit that my interest in the movie was quickly waning as the storyline trotted on and on in an ungodly slow pace.

"The Twin" has a rather small cast ensemble, so it was up to the cast to put on extraordinary performances to carry the movie. I will say that the cast actually put on fair enough performances, but it was just a shame that they had so little to work with from the script.

For a horror movie, then director Taneli Mustonen took a swing and missed. This movie wasn't scary, especially not to a life-long horror aficionado such as myself. Sure, if you're new to the horror genre, then I will say that "The Twin" could offer something worthwhile.

If you are a horror fan, then I wouldn't recommend you waste your time, money or effort on "The Twin". There are far better and more enjoyable new horror movies out there.

My rating of "The Twin" lands on a generous three out of ten stars.

Nothing new.

"The Twin" is a movie that has a couple of great qualities: the cinematography and its setting. Fully exploited the rural locations of Finland and a house perfectly lit by the crew to make it look gloomy. The performances of the leads are decent, but the performance of Barbara Marten stands out. The big problem with the movie is its script that tries to emulate current horror movies that revolve around psychological thriller and drama embedded in an art film and fails in its entirety. In addition, there are obvious influences from classics like "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Omen" but without being able to approach their quality. "The Twin" fails as a psychological horror film and offers nothing but excellent visuals.

A decent attempt at Psychological Horror

Flicking through the reviews of other people which are predominantly unfavorable by the way; I do wonder, what were they thinking? I mean, what were they expecting to see? While I understand the amount of frustration they might feel, their all-around cynical outlook, and their perspective in general; yet, I still believe, they had gone a little bit overboard with the criticisms this time.

Yes, the story is convoluted, perhaps, a little bit pretentious too; but the core notion still managed to deliver a compelling narrative (with a significant technical mastership) nonetheless. Now, I saw a lot of people complaining about the nature of the twists (or rather about how too many were there); speaking for myself though, I dug those, they kept me second-guessing up until the very end. And then came the final twist (not gonna spoil it, do not worry); caught me off-guard, I wasn't quite ready for it.

Slow and boring

Can't sleep? Watch this movie. It will knock you right out. How anyone could actually sit through this whole film is beyond me. I got to the hour mark and turned it off. This is definitely not a film I'd recommend. 4 stars.

Very poor

Very bad rendition of Rosemary's Baby very poorly exicuted. Started off ok ...but soon fell off a cliff. The towns people were just dumb. Too darn long ...

Are you a horror fan? Then you've basically seen this.

Ok so, I don't think this was nearly as unsuccessful as a whole as a lot of the reviews are claiming... however their reasoning is accurate.

This is an amalgamation of many horror movies you have already seen, so nothing original. It was a little too long and was almost on the verge of being too slow but I personally was entertained and it kept my attention enough.

I found the mother character irritating but damn did that actress do a good job. People get those two confused a lot. The character annoyed me but that actress killed it, there's a difference lol great job. All other performances were fine.

I was confused by the poor reviews until about the third act when I felt that it went down hill. It started to feel repetitive and labored. I started to feel particularly displeased when the exposition was in the form of a spoon fed monologue/ montage. I mean, how lame right? Lol

Although this was nothing particularly original and slightly derivative I think that it was still moderately successful in its own right. While I was displeased with some major things, I was still pretty entertained for the majority. I was thinking 6 or maybe even 7 depending on the ending until the last chunk and knocked it down to a 5.5 but I'll give it a 6 for the leads performance. I would casually recommend, if you don't have something else in cue lol.

Great build-up with well-known horror elements and chlichés ends with an too simple end result.

The Twin is a new horror film directed and partly written by Taneli Mustonen. Before this, he has directed more Finnish films. In the film, Rachel (Teresa Palmer) and Anthony (Steven Cree) move to Finland after a serious accident in which they lost one of their twin sons. Here, along with their surviving son Elliot (Tristan Ruggeri), they try to work through the trauma of the accident and put it behind them.

Still, Rachel notices that Elliot begins to act strangely, as if he is still in touch with his deceased brother. Rachel asks for help from a spiritual person, who after an investigation soon determines that something demonic is going on with Elliot. This horror film uses many elements from other well-known horror films, but quickly comes across as a bit cliché. They use illusion dreams like in A Nightmare on Elm Street, the horror atmosphere and story elements from Insidious and a mysterious sexe like in Midsommar. All these different elements lead to a large build-up in the film, but the final end result is suddenly too simple. Because of all this mysterious structure you expect a better end result, but the film ends with a weakly substantiated plot twist. Because of this plot twist, many used elements come across as unnecessary and some of them should not have been in the film, because much of this build-up comes across as unnecessary at the end. For a horror film, the film itself does not come across as scary, because besides the mystery of the film, little exciting happens. Because of this, you even start to miss the effect of a simple jump scare, to provide some tension or keep you awake during the long-winded story. The film seems to be playing with shadows to build up tension, but the shadows appear to be just isolated objects in the scenes with no further meaning. Due to too many changes and adjustments between the scenes and missing information, the film also comes across as a bit unclear. Often the scenes seem to build towards something, but then move on too quickly to the next scenes without creating clarity or tension. Finnish director Taneli Mustonen does use elements and traditions from Finland, but besides bringing this culture to the fore in an interesting way, the plot twist ultimately leads to nowhere. Teresa Palmer does her best as the lead role, but due to the lesser script and the disappointing end result, this is not always easy for her. Compared to other horror films in which she has played, she also does a little less physically, because she was pregnant during filming. Still, she does a better job than Steven Cree, because the script leaves him more in the background with little to do. For Tristan Ruggeri, this is only his first acting work in a film. He knows how to deliver appropriate acting, but due to the lesser script and quality of the film, he unfortunately manages to make his role little special.

Beautiful story

The Twin is a tragic beauty. A theme that's been discussed before with a twist of extremity. Story is heartbreaking and Teresa Palmer's precise performance brings out so much emotion to Rachel's character. Remote solitude visuals bring an eerie silence to the story. The Twin is a radical alternative to the usual vengeful dead sibling. Though having it's roots in the same oval corn maze it's outgrowth expose a murderous psychosis. Final great twist is what makes this movie a true masterpiece. Instead of the beloved weeping mother now sits a total stranger in the driver's seat of a car full of souvenirs. A prequel would save the time.

Just not good

I would describe this as a combination of Rosemary's Baby, The Omen, and The Shining. The only major difference is those were good movies. The acting is terrible and movie boring as hell. Pass on this one.

Absurd ending

I actually was enjoying this movie for the first three quarters of it, until the 'twist'. The ending is absolutely absurd. Giving it three stars is generous.

High on clichés, low on authenticity

The Twin has a handful of corny horror tropes: child loss, new home in the middle of nowhere, pregnancy exploitation, hallucinations, gaslighting, quasi-satanic rituals, folk atmosphere (or, at least, an attempt to create it), et cetera. Too many ingredients for one film, and eventually it's hard even to qualify the results. Is this a psychological drama wrapped in horror? Is this a horror wrapped in psychological drama? Is this a Finnish Midsommar? We wish we knew. Not even Lights Out's Teresa Palmer and the whole exotic setting ("wow, those Finns are so eerie but their nature is so beautiful") can make this ponderous mess work.
