According to the Singapore Department of Statistics, Singaporeans who claim Chinese ancestry and of Hainanese origin has been consistently the fifth largest as amongst the various Chinese dialect groups, after (in descending order) the Hokkiens, Teochews, Cantonese, Hakkas.

The Hainanese may have been especially associated with working in the services industry during colonial times due to how the other industries has been dominated by the other Chinese dialect groups in Singapore by the time the Hainanese arrived, but it would give rise to what the main core of the drama series is about, the Hainanese way of life in Singapore through amongst many things, the coffeeshop.
