Shilpa Sunthankar not only wrote and directed this film, but she also starred in this short film. In many ways, this short film reminded me of the Canadian-Indian director, Deepa Mehta, as both have made films about the experience of being Indian living in a culture in which they don't quite fit. Of course, Mehta is very, very experienced and a great director but there is something about Sunthankar that I also really liked.
The story is about an American-born lady of Indian descent. Because of this, she doesn't seem to feel that she fits in with the Indian culture as well as American culture, as people are always making assumptions about her--and simply don't let her be herself. It really makes you assume that this is a very autobiographical tale and I couldn't help but feel very sad when I watched because of this. However, despite really enjoying the film, I felt disappointed at the end because I sure wanted to see more--a sign of a very good film--one that has captured my heart.
Please, please, please Ms. Sunthankar--make more films. Your adeptness with telling a story is wonderful given your inexperience in the field. I would really like to see what you could come up with given a larger full-length budget.
