    Summary

Reviewers say 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' garners mixed reactions. Praised for faithfulness to the books, casting, and character relationships, it faces criticism for pacing, development, and plot deviations. Action scenes and dialogue receive mixed feedback, while changes to character traits and looks disappoint some fans. Despite issues, many hope for future improvements and closer adherence to the books.

Would give a 0 if possible.

So very far from the mark. I had hope that the film adaptations could redeem themselves, since this was a huge part of many of our childhoods. The script is bad enough, but it is further ruined by pointless story changes, and boring scenes that leave you just wanting it to be over already.

Disney yet again runs out of ideas, even when the source material is right in front of them. Sincerely hoping that the series drops, same as what happened to the movies, to leave room for a possible, successful reboot in the future.

Watching is a waste of time. Read the books and preserve your view of the characters since this isn't them.

Not perfect, but close enough to reminisce on the books

Is the show perfect? Absolutely not. The CGI isn't great and the pacing Is very fast. However, as someone who loved reading the series when I was in middle school, I love how much this reminds me of the books.

At first I wasn't sure about the casting choices, but after watching the show for a few episodes, I really think the actors do an excellent job of portraying their roles. The kid that plays the younger version of Ryan Reynolds is charismatic as hell on the screen and he and the girl who play Annabeth have great chemistry. Definitely above average performances for young actors in my opinion.

I am looking forward to see how they continue to expand the show into the following books because I'll never forget how disappointed I was at how inaccurate the Sea of Monsters movie adaptation. By the looks of this first season so far, I think we are going to get something a lot more accurate to the books. Not perfect, but definitely good enough to sit and watch for 40 minutes.

    High hopes unfulfilled

Heavily expository dialog, slow pacing, odd framing of scenes--why so many shots from behind when characters are speaking?--and clumsy fight choreography are just some of the factors that prevented me from enjoying the first two episodes of a show I was eagerly anticipating. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I prefer the admittedly flawed film. Even the SFX in the film seemed better, and to check my memory, I rewatched the film after struggling to stay awake during the Disney+ series, and yes, those effects from 2010 survive the comparison. The early encounter with the minotaur, for example, feels more kinetic and dangerous in the film, while the TV version fails to convince that the adolescent Percy could in any way survive the encounter.

    Underwhelming

My headline pretty much says it. The pacing is too fast honestly (great for kids with short attention spans ig) and the lines seem pretty cliché and cheesy to be frank. The visual effects could also be a bit better. I know the movie wasn't everyone's favorite but I do think they had better visuals in it. The issue with the pacing is that it really isn't giving the audience enough time to create an emotional relationship with Percy that readers might already have. If anything this series is for them and no one else which doesn't make it good television. And I might be in the minority but there is nothing wrong with slowing down and letting your affections for the character grow. Since these are based on books they could've gone even MORE in depth than before but they actually are seeming to go faster through the intro stuff than they really should be. I think the show is overhyped and hope it gets better.

    Mid

I knew this was gonna be mid. The comics are the best adaptation I've seen so far and they've convinced me that motion picture adaptations of Rick's stories need to be animated. They blew through ~120 million to make a boring show with boring fights when they could've spent a fraction of that to deliver a show as entertaining as Avatar The Last Airbender, Young Justice, Invincible, etc.

I'm baffled by the people who imagined things in live-action when reading the books, some of the scenes sounded so goofy and outlandish that I couldn't imagine anything but a comic book come to life. I understand Rick felt pressure to match series like Harry Potter and Hunger Games and I think Walker Scobell has the kind of charisma to compete with the main actors from those franchises, but PJO was obviously never going to be like those books. They should've taken a risk and paved their own path.
