TV appears to have taken a bit of a hit on the diversity front in the first half of the year.

According to a new report from Samba TV, while diversity in the United States continue to grow, that is not being represented on the small screen. The company says that representation of non-white leads on television was down 12% year-over-year.

Breaking that down even further, Samba reports that just 39% of the top-billed actors in the top 50 TV shows of 2023 were non-white. Hispanic actors took the hardest hit, accounting for just 6% of top-billed actors in those shows — a 40% decrease in representation year-over-year.

The company used first-party data to determine the Top 25 shows each from linear and streaming that were released in January through May of 2024.

That’s not to say that diverse casting doesn’t attract an audience. In fact, as has been proved countless times, the truth is quite the opposite.

It’s been 10 years since David Oyelowo made his U.S. breakthrough portraying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.” Playing the awe-inspiring civil rights leader was an opportunity for the British-Nigerian actor to live up to his surname, which translates to “a king deserves respect.”

Oyelowo has been reflecting on that time in his life a lot more lately, thanks in part to “Becoming King,” a documentary directed by his wife, Jessica Oyelowo, that captures the seven-year journey to bring “Selma” to the big screen.

“It was a big year,” he says of 2014. “There was no way you could know the sheer amount of things that would happen, because at the beginning of it, nothing was happening. ‘Selma’ felt dead. I was in the middle of shooting ‘A Most Violent Year,’ having a good time with that, but just feeling in a state of limbo and then—”

Studiocanal has promoted Chloé Marquet to head of international sales for films and TV series, with the TV sales team now reporting into her.

Marquet, who has been head of international film sales since 2020, will continue to report to Anne Chérel, Studiocanal’s EVP global sales and distribution.

The company has also promoted Pauline Saint-Hilaire to head of library. Her remit now extends to documentaries and catalogue TV series in addition to catalogue film sales.

Upcoming Studiocanal feature films include Paddington In Peru, Back To Black and Role Play.

The Studiocanal catalogue includes 9,000 films.

Studiocanal has promoted Chloé Marquet to Head of International Sales for Films and TV Series, in a move that will see the TV sales team now report to her.

Marquet in turn will report to Anne Chérel, Studiocanal EVP Global Sales and Distribution.

Pauline Saint-Hilaire, who is currently head of International Library Sales, has had her remit expanded to include documentaries and catalogue TV series, in addition to catalogue film sales and direct sales to channels and local platforms.

She will report to Juliette Hochart Studiocanal EVP Library.

“For many years they have both contributed significantly to the international success of Studiocanal movies and have built strong relationships with all our partners. Their leadership and passion, combined with our talented sales team, will be extremely beneficial to the success of our prestigious TV series,” said Cherel.

The week of Jan. 15-21 was a big one for streaming.

Seven titles — three original series, three acquired shows and one movie — each drew more than 1 billion minutes of viewing for the week, the most that have ever hit that mark in the four-year history of Nielsen’s streaming charts. The previous high was six, which has happened four times (including two weeks earlier).

Kids’ favorite Bluey was the overall No. 1, with just over 1.5 billion minutes on Disney+. Reacher (1.23 billion) reclaimed the top spot among original shows from the prior week‘s leader, Fool Me Once, which fell by more than 50 percent to 1.06 billion minutes of watch time. Netflix’s heist movie Lift grew by 19 percent week-to-week, scoring 1.04 billion minutes.

Young Sheldon (1.16 billion minutes), Netflix’s docuseries American Nightmare (1.12 billion) and Grey’s Anatomy (1.09 billion) also hit the billion-minute mark.

That was good for third place among original series, behind Fool Me Once (2.4 billion minutes of viewing) — which was also the No. 1 overall title for the second straight week — and Reacher (1.06 billion), which recorded its fifth straight week over the billion-minute mark.

Disney+ and Hulu also saw a good start for Echo, its first binge-released Marvel series and the first Marvel show in the Disney+ era to receive a TV-ma rating.
