Google Search traffic is the single biggest source of revenue for YouTube parent Alphabet–and, for the first time in over a decade, it looks like Google’s share of the search market is about to drop below 50%, driven down by things like ChatGPT and TikTok becoming Gen Z’s search engine.
Alphabet made $49.4 billion in revenue from Google Search this past quarter alone, so obviously keeping traffic high is a priority. And one way it’s attempting to do that is with a new YouTube feature: hyperlinked comments.
Originally rolled out as a limited experiment in July 2023, hyperlinked comments are appearing more widely now, and they turn videos’ comment sections into buffets of links to Google Search results.

Years after becoming a big business in countries like China and Japan, social shopping finally has a serious foothold in the West. It’s forecast to become a $100 billion industry in the U.S. alone next year, and a lot of those billions are driven by Gen Z shoppers on apps like TikTok. Fiverr just released data showing that over half of Gen Z’ers say they only plan to find holiday gifts on TikTok Shop this year.
But they aren’t the only ones shopping there.
A new report from media services agency Horizon Media shows that, of course, Gen Z does indulge in social shopping, where they buy products through creator recommendations on things like TikTok Shop videos, shoppable Instagram posts, YouTube merch shelves, and livestreams across all the above plus on giants like Amazon, which has been tapping creators to sell on stream for several years now,...

San Francisco, Aug 13 (Ians) Tech giant Google’s Search will show users what cloud streaming services have a particular video game, building on existing support for movies, TV, and music.
According to 9To5Google, for years, Google Search has acted as an aggregator of the world’s streaming services.
If you want to watch a particular show, users can use Google Search or Google TV to get accurate info about what services it is on, the report said.
For example, searching for The Simpsons reveals that the show can be streamed from various apps, including Disney+ and Hulu, or purchased from multiple stores, it added.
In the last few days, Google Search has expanded this capability to include support for video games.
However, rather than including links to various consoles’ storefronts or to the many PC gaming retailers, Google is strictly focusing on cloud gaming.

How do you craft a story when everyone already knows how it ends?
That's far from a new concept when it comes to making movies or shows based on true events, but attempting to dramatize a widely-publicized and fairly recent story still brings its own challenges. Created, written, and executive produced by "Billions" veterans Brian Koppelman, David Levien, and Beth Schacter, Showtime's "Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber" meets these challenges head-on and with a brash, self-aware, and even reckless sense of flair ... not entirely unlike the actual subject of the series, in some ways. As the sleazy and hopelessly power-hungry...

San Francisco, Feb 18: Facebook has announced to block both Australian users and media companies from sharing or viewing local and international news content, in response to Australia's proposed new Media Bargaining law.
Facebook said that the proposed law fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between "our platform and publishers who use it to share news content".
"It has left us facing a stark choice: attempt to comply with a law that ignores the realities of this relationship, or stop allowing news content on our services in Australia. With a heavy heart, we are choosing the latter," said William Easton, Managing Director, Facebook Australia & New Zealand.
Late last month, Google also threatened to pull its Search engine from Australia if the proposed media bargaining code, that directs Google and other tech giants to pay news publishers for using their content, goes into effect.

Facebook will restrict publishers and users in Australia from sharing or viewing Australian and international news content as the Parliament there debates a law that would force tech and social media platforms – namely it and Google — to pay more for journalism on their sites.

New Delhi, Jan 24 (Ians) As the News Media Bargaining Code triggers a bitter war between Google and the Australian government, the tech giant has detailed eight facts on why reaching a workable Code is important but serious concerns with the current draft remain.
Google said that it supports a fair Code but the current version remains unworkable.
"We believe that the concerns we and others have raised can be addressed with reasonable changes. We have proposed a solution that would see Google pay publishers for value under this new law -- without breaking Google Search," the company said in a statement.
Rod Sims, chair of the watchdog Competition and Consumer Commission (Accc), said on Friday that Google and Facebook just don't want the code to be implemented.
"Google and Facebook like to do things on their terms. I think the code does what it's intended to do. It is workable.

Sydney, Jan 22 (Ians) Google on Friday threatened to pull its Search engine from Australia if a proposed media bargaining law, that directs Google to pay news publishers, goes into effect.
Mel Silva, Managing Director of Google Australia and New Zealand, appeared before a public hearing of the Senate Economics Legislation Committee that is reviewing a proposed new law called the News Media Bargaining Code.
She said that in its current form, the Code remains unworkable and if it became law would hurt not just Google, but small publishers, small businesses, and the millions of Australians that use our services every day.
"Coupled with the unmanageable financial and operational risk if this version of the Code were to become law it would give us no real choice but to stop making Google Search available in Australia," Silva told the panel.

This review is based on all ten half-hour episodes of Search Party season 4 and contains no spoilers.
“But you told the truth, and the truth set you free…”
Search Party debuted as a dark and provocative mystery and, even though each season has subscribed to that model, the show has evolved and become radically different each year. It’s not unusual for plot-heavy series to play chicken with their narrative in this way, but Search Party triumphs through each step of the progressively dark path that Dory heads down.
Search Party season 3 actively had the audience question if Dory is even a good person and if she deserves freedom for the lives that she took. Dory’s subtle transformation (and Alia Shawkat’s phenomenal performance) and the tension that it creates in the audience are Search Party’s greatest magic tricks. Search Party season 4 once more reinvents itself, but with...

Pema Tseden (པད་མ་ཚེ་བརྟན།), born in 1969, is the first Tibetan alumni of the prestigious Beijing Film Academy graduating from the director’s department. He also studied Chinese-Tibetan translation and worked as a teacher and a civil servant. He is not only a sensitive and highly regarded director, portraying the modern Tibet with attention, accuracy and poetic touch, but also an esteemed writer, whose works have been translated into several languages. Although portraying ethnic minorities is a delicate topic in China, so far he has managed to deal with censors well, as all of his movies got approval. “The Silent Holy Stones”, his debut feature-length film in 2005, the very first feature shot in Tibet with a Tibetan crew, Tibetan actors and in Tibetan language. His following films got selected at international film festivals. As a fiction author, he both writes in Chinese and Tibetan. His books have been translated in several languages.

The agonizing wait is almost over, and in just three days, The Mandalorian will return to our screens with the season 2 premiere, which is shaping up to be appointment viewing for Star Wars fans across the world, as well as those who aren’t quite as keen on a galaxy far, far away but still found themselves enraptured by Jon Favreau’s acclaimed addition to the mythology.
One downside is that the episodes will be arriving on a weekly basis, but it seems unlikely that Mando and Baby Yoda’s latest adventure will be getting review bombed in a similar fashion to The Boys. So far, Disney and Lucasfilm have done a frustratingly good job of keeping plot details under wraps, but it isn’t long until we find out what direction the more expansive second run will be heading in.

Gene Roddenberry left Star Trek’s third season to write a Tarzan film that never got produced, setting a tone for the next decade of his career. He produced the wretched Pretty Maids all in a Row and slunk back to television, first with the animated Trek and then a deal with Warner Bros that would see him produce the underrated Questor and Spectre along with a new science fiction film, seemingly designed to distance himself from the optimistic Sf albatross around his neck.
He cut a deal with CBS in 1972 to produce a 90-minute film, Genesis II designed to be a pilot for a potential series. He quickly reunited with many of the behind-the-scenes Trek team and got to work, creating a dystopia that began in 1979. We open in 2133 as Earth is recovering from nuclear war and mankind has been dramatically reduced in number. Apparently, the survivors didn’t...
