I'm a middle aged Dad who likes movies but hates bad movies ha ha. I watched this film with my gay daughter. She had heard about it from a friend. Wasn't expecting much as she told me it was a low budget movie made by a student but right from the beginning it caught my attention - for all the right reasons. It is a rollercoaster of emotions as we follow our two leads on a road trip before Egghead heads to college. At times funny, sweet, sad and poignant it always rings true. Louis Tomeo excels in the part of Egghead which allows him to show his comic chops whilst having the depth of emotions to handle the heavier scenes. The actress who plays the quirky Jess does a great job of being awkward, funny and lovable - all at the same time! The script is tight, believable and clever (but not TOO clever!) and the writer/director Sarah Holland manages to tell a heartwarming story without descending into sappy. Oh, and the soundtrack is kick ass. We'd never heard any of the songs before but somehow they all fit the scenes they were applied to perfectly. This movie isn't just a good LGBT movie - it's a good movie PERIOD.
"Egghead & Twinkie" leads viewers of all communities into a journey of lifelong friendship that resognates with a "coming of age" generation. The colorful cartoons throughout added character depth to their emotions and added a fun, comedic side to delivering the plot of the film. As Twinkie toys with the idea of being self-centered, off-course, and somewhat sneaky around her lifelong best friend, it's no surprise to see Egghead come out as the hero. But Twinkie regains respect as she realizes her ability to embrace her identity came with an emotional cost. This cost resignates with most viewers, no matter what their sexual identity, and this is where the film captures my 10 stars. This is a great film to even the most close-minded of viewers as it gracefully embraces individualism and identity at all levels of their comfort zone. It tastefully suggests viewers to respect others and simply find happiness in us being ourselves. I hope to see "Egghead & Twinkie" stream at some higher level in the future.
Egghead & Twinkie is what you'd get if you blend together Little Miss Sunshine, The Half of It and Japanese anime. While many of its tropes have been done countless times before, Egghead & Twinkie is a refreshing coming out film that crosses multiple genres: coming of age drama, comedy, and road trip. The lead characters are brilliant, and their friendship is one of the best parts of the film. Twinkie's journey - physically and metaphorically - is an absolute joy to watch, as are the flashback scenes and moments with Jess. While Egghead's confession that he has feelings for Twinkie, and her own coming out, could've ruined their relationship, it brings them even closer than ever.
I've been following this movie since 2019 when it was posted on TikTok. I am so happy with the results. There was great representation of the coming out experience. I came out my senior year of high school and I related to this story on a deep level. This movie takes you on an exciting, fun and cute coming of age adventure. I experienced so many emotions during this movie including excitement, anger, nostalgia and I laughed a bunch.
There aren't many gen z movies that depict our diologue correctly. I had a great time watching this movie and will be watching it again in the future. Great job, I'm am so proud of everyone involved! <3.

A sweet, poignant film dealing with real life issues!
"Egghead and Twinkie" (love that title!) provides an inspiring, supportive message for young adult viewers. (As a former high school teacher, this would be the type of movie I would have loved for students to have seen and discussed.) The movie is entertaining- lots of adventure along the way!- and the main characters are endearing. What great personalities and what a special relationship between the two!
...It is rare to see a movie that 1. Doesn't rely on sex scenes to draw in the attention of viewers, and 2. Leaves me hoping for a sequel!
