This film was originally designed to be told as four different stories through four different directors, that have ongoing characters interacting through the four films. The producers dropped three of the directors. 'DeWitt Jones 'was the remaining director and screenwriter. He took on the work of the dropped screenwriters and directors and finished the script dropping it to three films at 30 minutes each. The producers asked him to direct the three films, but he declined because he was wrapped up in post production on 'Night of the Jackals' and suggested that the producers Tarjatta Rose and 'Renee Peoples' direct the three films. This was a brave move, which paid out to a film completed under budget and under schedule.
The screenwriter DeWitt Jones is a fan of, and was heavily influenced by, the Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski's colors trilogy which is why all three films have interweaving plots and characters.
