It is based on The Most Irresponsible Man in Space (Uchuu Ichi no Musekinin Otoko) light novel series by Hitoshi Yoshioka, taking the title from its first volume. It was produced by some of Japan's larger studios, including Big West, Tatsunoko Productions, King Records and VAP.
