Ok. So the first 8 minutes was interesting and caught my attention. Every minute after that was so boring it was putting me to sleep. I can't believe the director and film editors saw the final cut of this movie and thought "that's great, people will love it". Absolutely nothing happens for the rest of the movie. You get to watch this girl pour booze in her face and that's the extent of the movie. It's no spoiler to say it's a supernatural ghost movie but they don't explain anything. I think they implied what it was at the beginning but this movie is such a cluster flop you have no idea. Needless to say I do not recommend this movie. You'll find more excitement doing laundry or waiting for your fingernails grow.
Evie, her older brother Tony, and their mother are walking their beach when she finds an amulet. She starts wearing it and seems to change in personality. It's years later. Evie is a young troubled woman. She and Tony had been separated for many years after they were sent to an orphanage for some reason. She reconnects with her brother and regains her disturbing childhood memories.
This is an English indie horror. It struggles to gain the needed spooky atmosphere. It has the horror music score but daylight indie filming robs it of that horror tone. Still, I like watching a creepy kid in a horror. I don't mind the first act, but then it switches. It's a lot of holding back the story for a slow incremental reveal. It's a little precious with the story and doesn't give it a great payoff.

When I sat down to watch the 2023 movie "Evie" here in 2024, I had never actually heard about the movie. But I must say that I was instantly drawn to the movie's cover. And given the movie's cover and it being a horror movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I had to watch it.
Writers Dominic Brunt and Jamie Lundy put together a rather interesting script and storyline. I was intrigued by the narrative and genuinely entertained, because it was a nicely constructed narrative. Sure, the pacing in "Evil" is a bit tedious, and thus it might not find a broad appeal with the wider audience. But I do think, if you enjoy horror mysteries, then you should certainly give "Evie" a chance.
I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, but the actors and actresses put on good performances. I enjoy watching unfamiliar talents on the screen when I watch a movie, so the cast of "Evie" was a treat for me. Honey Lundy did a nice job in portraying the young Evie, while Holli Dempsey did an equal good job portraying adult Evie.
Something that really worked well in "Evie" was the music. It was dark ambient atmospheric and really layered the movie in an otherworldly sheen. It sounded like music made by CryoChamber, but I am not sure if it was that band or not. Regardless, the music in "Evie" is out of this world and really compliments the movie quite nicely.
My rating of directors Dominic Brunt and Jamie Lundy's 2023 movie "Evie" lands on a six out of ten stars.

The description is dead wrong. It's more like a girl finds a "cursed" necklace and then she has family issues. I fully expect this to be a horror movie or horror related but it's not even close. It's not an awful movie if you actually write the real description. I'm rating it based of the description it's given. The last maybe 10 minutes have some mild horror elements but that's as scary as we get . It's more or less a snooze fest. No explanation on the necklace or what it supposedly did to her. She just seems like a messed up kid who grows up with a messed up family. Nothing to do with demons or any of the likes.
I am a sucker for anything folk horror, so the fact that I almost turned this off about 20 minutes in was surprising.
The action moved at an uncomfortably quick pace that felt awkward and clunky. Come to find out it was just a prelude and it ended up settling into something more interesting. This movie is heavy on conversation and light on the action. They did a good job keeping up the suspense, slowly building up to the climax but nothing really exciting happens until the last 4th of the movie. The ending was also pretty unfulfilling and left you wondering what REALLY happened as not much was really explained. The movie as a whole was shot nicely, edited interestingly and had high picture quality. The acting was also generally successful across the board.
This story definitely had some potential it just felt a bit undercooked. It was a decent experience in total, but definitely on the lower end so I would only loosely recommend this to someone who is partial to folk horror.

- GoofsVikings didn't kidnap woman en masse and take them to be their wives. Vikings were fit men, in their prime, who took pride in their appearance, contemporary accounts say the women were more than happy to be taken. And they didn't take ships full of women; there wasn't a huge amount of empty space on ships, and that's a lot of extra mouths to feed, for very little in return, for a group of explorers and colonists.
