Most biopics are thuddingly prosaic: There’s a lot of “this happened, then that happened,” performed by a famous person covering themselves in latex in an attempt to resemble another famous person.
In the hands of British auteur Terence Davies, however, biopics can be poetry, although his choice of subject matter probably helps in that department. On the heels of his gorgeous and contemplative “A Quiet Passion,” about the life of Emily Dickinson, he returns with another passionately quiet portrait, this time exploring Siegfried Sassoon in “Benediction.”
It’s an impressionistic collage, and Davies skillfully jumps from the 1910s to the 1960s and back again. “Benediction” fleetingly encapsulates the horrors of WWI — Sassoon went from being a decorated soldier to an outspoken critic against those who would prolong the conflict — the shadow-world of British gay men in the decades before homosexuality was decriminalized in the UK, and the bitterness of...

Italian director Luca Guadagnino (“Suspiria“) is a very busy fella with his cannibal film “Bones & All” on the horizon and a new tennis drama, “Challengers” in the works. The filmmaker has many irons in the fire, but it looks like one of them won’t be moving on into the production phase.
During a chat with IndieWire, the filmmaker gave updates on various projects in the works and revealed his series remake of “Brideshead Revisited” at BBC starring Andrew Garfield, Cate Blanchett, Ralph Fiennes, and Rooney Mara has been “shelved.” The reason for the project’s discontinuation wasn’t provided but given the high-profile cast, scheduling could have been a problem.

Don’t call “Call Me By Your Name” a romance film. Director Luca Guadagnino argues that the Oscar-winning period piece starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer as star-crossed lovers is more tragedy than romance.
“The movie is very tragic,” Guadagnino told Fantastic Man. “People think it’s very romantic, but I think it’s tragic. The honesty of Elio (Chalamet) is crushed by the dishonesty of Oliver (Hammer), and when Elio cries, he cries over the fact he’s being stabbed to death by Oliver’s lies, which happens to us every day in relationships.”
Guadagnino added, “It’s not a romantic movie or a vanilla version of gay love, and to read the movie in that way is a bit silly. And ironic.”
While “Call Me By Your Name” was criticized for the way it panned to a tree during a sex scene between Elio and Oliver, Guadagnino...

The thin line between heaven and hell is exposed in “Under the Banner of Heaven.”
Based on the true-crime bestseller by Jon Krakauer, the limited FX series for Hulu stars Andrew Garfield as a devout detective whose faith is put to the test as he investigates a brutal double murder that seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fundamentalism.
Daisy Edgar-Jones portrays a faithful church follower who is one of the murder victims, while Sam Worthington, Denise Gough, Wyatt Russell, Billy Howle, Gil Birmingham, Adelaide Clemens, Rory Culkin, Seth Numrich, Chloe Pirrie, Sandra Seacat, and Christopher Heyerdahl complete the ensemble cast.
“Under the Banner of Heaven” shines a spotlight on the sacred and the profane and the dangers of divine devotion. Academy Award winner Dustin Lance Black (“Milk”) created the series and serves as an executive producer alongside Brian Grazer,...
