Rick Riordan had been planning to enter a semi-retirement from writing and pursue his PhD when Netflix approached him about a possible adaptation of the Kane Chronicles. This adaptation alongside the proposed Disney+ series based off of Percy Jackson and the Olympians made Riordan reconsider and ultimately delay his plans.
