The movie is based on a 2018 novel of the same title by Miriam Toews. The novel itself was inspired by similar events that took place in a Mennonite colony in Bolivia.
The exact location of the events of the film is never stated. It was shot in Canada so some assume the film's events are set there; however, there's a scene where characters are teaching each other to identify the Southern Cross in the night sky. The Southern Cross is not visible from Canada; it can only be seen in the Southern Hemisphere. The film's story is based on actual events that took place in Bolivia, so it can be assumed that, at least, the events are taking place in South America.
