The quest to develop IVF plays out in predictable and thoroughly heartwarming fashion in Ben Taylor’s Netflix film. Here’s our Joy review.
Picture the scene: James Norton, looking less like Happy Valley’s rotten ruffian Tommy Lee Royce and more like an overenthusiastic biology postgrad, is desperate to convince a colleague of his revolutionary idea. What if, he posits with the scientific professionalism of a vaguely northern labrador, we could fertilise an egg outside the womb? What if we could produce an embryo in, to pick a piece of lab equipment entirely at random, a test tube?
The colleague isn’t convinced. “We’ll unite them all against us”, Bill Nighy’s character reminds him. The church, the medical establishment, the media. But Doctor Marley & Me has his trump card. “We’ll have the mothers”, he whispers. The score swells; Nighy’s eyes twinkle; history is made.

The actor on bringing one of Barack Obama’s favourite books to TV, going clubbing in Berlin and her fascination with espionage
Hammersmith-born Rosamund Pike, 44, studied English literature at Oxford before her breakthrough role as a Bond girl in Die Another Day. Subsequent film roles include Pride & Prejudice, Made in Dagenham, Jack Reacher and A Private War. She was Oscar-nominated for Gone Girl, won a Golden Globe for I Care a Lot and an Emmy for State of the Union. Her latest project is a 10-part BBC audio drama People Who Knew Me. She lives in Prague with her partner, businessman Robie Uniacke, and their two sons.
What attracted you to People Who Knew Me?
It’s a remarkable story and one I felt emotionally drawn to. Anyone who’s ever told a lie quickly finds that in order to support it, you have to tell another, then another.

“I’m quite method in the way that I work,” explains Lizzie Yianni-Georgiou. The Oscar-nominated Hair and Makeup Designer recently applied her craft to Edgar Wright’s latest horror-tinged drama “Last Night in Soho.” Her meticulous and specific approach to makeup and hair helped inform the characters of this time-hopping murder mystery. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The Focus Features film contained a unique challenge for Yianni-Georgiou, thanks to its dual contemporary and 1960’s settings. Thomasin McKenzie portrays Eloise, a budding fashion design student in London. Eloise receives visions from the past where she follows Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy), a singer trying to find success in a world controlled by lecherous men. As Eloise grows obsessed with Sandie’s story, she adopts the chanteusse’s signature blonde locks and style.

Michael Caine said Friday on a BBC podcast that his newest film, Best Sellers, may be his last part, citing the pandemic, a lingering back issue and the lack of projects for “a leading man that’s 88.” But that’s not quite true, he clarified in a statement today.
“Regarding retirement,” said the Oscar-winner, “I’ve spent over 50 years getting up at 6:00 a.m. to make movies, and I’m not getting rid of my alarm clock!”
Caine reinforced the point in a tweet posted this morning saying, “I haven’t retired and not a lot of people know that.”

Actors Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson, who’ve won a brace of Oscars each, will headline the cast of “The Great Escapers,” which Pathé will present at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.
Inspired by true events, the film will tell the story of Bernard Jordan’s (Caine) escape from his care home in 2014 to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France. Jordan’s adventure, spanning 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Irene (Jackson), and the story celebrates their love without sentimentality.
The film will be directed by BAFTA nominee Oliver Parker (“An Ideal Husband”) from a script by BAFTA nominee William Ivory (“Made in Dagenham”). Principal photography is scheduled for June this year.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, made a surprise visit Friday to a high school in Dagenham, East London, to speak about gender parity ahead of International Women’s Day.
Her visit also marked the 50th anniversary of Britain’s Equal Pay Act, which sought to prevent discrimination against women in the workplace. Markle was joined on stage at the school by Geraldine Dear, one of the female workers at the Ford motor plant in Dagenham who went on strike for equal pay in 1968, and whose case helped trigger the legislation.
Talking of their story, which was made into the 2010 film “Made in Dagenham,” Markle said: “Women who had the strength to really stand up for something that they knew needed to be done is the best example of no matter how small you might feel, how low you may feel on the ladder or the totem pole, no matter what color you are,...

It was admittedly a “big challenge” for makeup artist and hairstylist Elizabeth Yianni-Georgiou to turn Taron Egerton into Elton John for “Rocketman.” “Obviously Elton’s got a huge fan base, so I was very aware of how we needed to please them.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Yianni-Georgiou above.

Directed by Dexter Fletcher, the Paramount release takes a magical-realist look at the life of the iconic rock star, from his early rise through his struggles with drug addiction. Because the film features fantastical musical numbers set to John’s greatest hits, Yianni-Georgiou realized she couldn’t “overload Taron with huge amounts of makeup because it was a role where he would be dancing and bouncing off pianos,” not to mention aging “through four decades.”

There have been many, many movies about World War II, and of course most of them are like Saving Private Ryan, or last year’s Hacksaw Ridge as they focus on the brave heroes who went off to war and found a way not only to survive, but also come home as heroes.
Their Finest, based on Lissa Evans’ 2009 book Their Finest Hour and a Half, instead focuses on the brave women back home who did their part to try to keep spirits up and continue to support the British troops overseas.
In the movie, Gemma Arterton plays Catrin Cole, an ad writer hired to write the female dialogue (or “slop”) for the British Ministry of Information’s propaganda films they release to inspire the people back in England. Working with screenwriter Tom Buckley (Sam Claflin), Catrin finds the story of two twin sisters who borrow their father’s boat...

Industrial relations drama 7 Minutes opened the Italian Film Festival. Michele Placio: 'I demonstrates what's happening in Europe today'
Michele Placido's 7 Minutes (7 Minuti) opened the Italian Film Festival at Edinburgh Filmhouse last night with the director in attendance. Introducing the film, Placido described the festival - which runs until March 16 at venues in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Inverness and Dundee - as "a small festival and a great festival at the same time".
His film is based on the true story of female workers at a textiles firm who are asked to agree on a small change to their terms and conditions during a takeover of their factory. Echoes of workers rights film Made In Dagenham combine with the tension of 12 Angry Men as the women, from a range of different backgrounds and ethnicities, must put the decision to a vote. It's a subject which will strike a chord across European...

Labor Day celebrates working people and the labor unions that brought working people the 40-hour work week, the 8-hour day, overtime pay, work-place safety, paid holidays and vacations, and a host of other protections and benefits. To honor those hard-working people and organized labor, here is a list (in no particular order) of a dozen worthy narrative films for Labor Day.
Norma Rae (1979)
For many people, the words “labor union” bring to mind the image of Sally Field standing up in defiance in “Norma Rae.” Field won an Oscar for her unforgettable, inspiring character, a worker in a Southern textile factory who becomes involved in labor organizing and stands up to management after the factory workers’ health is threatened in the workplace. This stirring drama, based on a true story, also stars Beau Bridges as Norma Rae’s husband Sonny and Ron Leibman as an union organizer from the Northeast.

Screen canvasses industry opinion on Langan’s tenure and the prospects for one of the UK’s cornerstone funders.
There have been warm tributes to Christine Langan as news broke yesterday of her impending departure from BBC Films to join UK production outfit Baby Cow.
Attention is also now beginning to turn to who is likely to be her successor and what plans the BBC has for its film arm in the long run.
“Christine leaves BBC Films in good shape,” commented producer Stewart Mackinnon of Headline Pictures, who worked with the broadcaster’s film arm on titles including Quartet and The Invisible Woman, among other projects.
Pride producer David Livingstone noted Langan’s “incisiveness.”
“The thing I remember particularly about Christine is her giving very good notes about the final editing of the film (Pride). She was very clear and very precise, and with a light hand on the tiller,” Livingstone said.

I've somehow never even heard of Watership Down, but I understand it had a profound impact on a lot of people when they were growing up. Now the story will be able to find a larger audience and reach a whole new generation, as the BBC and Netflix are teaming for an animated miniseries adaptation of Richard Adams' novel. Variety reports that the show will be available sometime in 2017. The outlet has a good breakdown of the story and an announcement of its impressive cast:
Set in the idyllic rural landscape of southern England, the adventure tale follows a band of rabbits on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they journey forth from their native Sandleford Warren through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, toward a promised land and a more perfect society.

After putting in several years at Geiranger’s warning centre, geologist Kristian (Kristoffer Joner) is moving on to a prestigious gig with an oil company. But the very day he’s about to drive his family to their new life in the city, Kristian senses something isn’t right. The substrata are shifting. No one wants to believe...

The task of transforming a popular movie into a stage musical is a tough challenge that has brought successes (Billy Elliot), and disappointments (Made in Dagenham), so Gurinder Chadha's idea of bringing her 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham to the West End was an intriguing one.
The majority of the feel and the plot of the original film remains in the musical. Set in suburban west London, it focuses on Jess, who worships David Beckham and has a desire to play football that doesn't fit in with her Punjabi Indian parents' plans.
She secretly plays for her local women's football team and soon falls in love with coach Joe, which creates a difficult love triangle with her best friend Jules, a role which helped transform Keira Knightley into an international star.
The film's musical leaning lends itself well for a musical adaptation, and composer Howard Goodall and lyricist Charles Hart...

It’s 10 p.m. in London, and Rosamund Pike has just roasted a chicken, finished the washing up, folded the laundry and tended to a wee sick one. Now she sits for a moment in her kitchen, spent but happy, her four-day-old baby son snoozing in his basket beside her.
The setting may be calm and pastoral, in keeping with Pike’s new life, but it’s sharply at odds with the actor we now know her to be. This year she delivered a career-making performance as Amy Dunne, the stunningly beautiful, dangerously secretive and cynically vicious wife in David Fincher’s “Gone Girl,...

Gemma Arterton has claimed that Beyoncé and Taylor Swift have made feminism fashionable.
The Made in Dagenham actress praised the impact social media has had on changing attitudes towards women's rights.
Speaking on Alan Carr: Chatty Man, Arterton said: "Feminism is in fashion, as made by Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. Now that they're feminists, everyone else is."
She added: "I think social media has helped a lot. People like Caitlin Moran have changed everything, Lena Dunham - so there's loads of people who are being more outspoken and being listened to and having an influence. I think it's great."
Recalling how she spoke about equal pay for women in the Houses of Parliament recently, she said: "It was cold. It's huge - it's very cavernous, The Great Hall and everything - it's so old obviously, so it's all stone and wood.

Mel C has praised her fellow Spice Girl Mel B as an X Factor judge.
The singer told Digital Spy and others that she believes Mel B's "honesty" is helping to stand her out on the panel.
X Factor Halloween review: The Fright Night twist we all saw coming
"She's doing a great job on X Factor. We're dead proud. I think she's the best thing on it," Mel C said at the launch of West End musical Made in Dagenham on Wednesday night (November 5).
"I just think she's a great woman for the job. She's straight-talking, she's not playing a role. She's just being herself, and I think you have to appreciate her honesty.
"I wouldn't want to be a contestant... but she's doing a wonderful job."
Meanwhile, Mel B made a Twitter gaffe at the weekend when she asked fans to save the already-eliminated Jake Quickenden.
