The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia

Brendan Fraser, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Elizabeth Hurley & More Join Star-Studded Cast For Animated Mobster Parody
Image
Breaking Bear has just been announced, and the animated show is set to feature a standout voice cast that includes Brendan Fraser and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Fraser will be best known to many for leading the cast of The Mummy (1999) and its two sequels, but he has also appeared in a host of other film projects, recently experiencing a major acting comeback with his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale (2022). Gellar, on the other hand, rose to fame around the same time with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and recently appeared in Dexter: Original Sin.

Per Deadline, Fraser, Gellar, Annie Murphy, Elizabeth Hurley, and Josh Gad have been cast to lead Breaking Bear, a new adult animated series from Tubi. The series, which is created by Julien Nitzberg, is said to parody the tropes of mobster movies, with the report stating that the show will be akin to a comedic combination of Yogi Bear and The Sopranos.

Tom DeLonge and Julien Nitzberg Set Adult Animated Comedy ‘Breaking Bear’ at Tubi
Image
Tubi has greenlit “Breaking Bear,” an adult animated series created by Julien Nitzberg and produced by Cartel Entertainment and Tom DeLonge’s To the Stars Media.

Described as a parody of mobster dramas, combining elements of Yogi Bear with “The Sopranos,” “Breaking Bear” Breaking Bear follows the escapades of three bear siblings who decide they have to start selling drugs in order to raise money and save their home after gas companies start fracking next to their cave. The bears soon enlist other forest animals in a scheme that will pit them against oil companies, the Russian mafia, local Hell’s Angels and polar bears who hate anything that isn’t white.

“When The Cartel pitched a series with cartoon animals as mobsters, I knew it was an offer I couldn’t refuse,” said Adam Lewinson, chief content officer at Tubi. “This is the perfect project to expand our adult animation...

Johnny Depp Is Producing a Michael Jackson Musical, as Told by His Sequined Glove
When Julien Nitzberg was hired to write a TV movie about the life of late pop star Michael Jackson, he found it impossible to detail his stained legacy and make something that would be acceptable to a network. So, he didn’t — and took the story to the stage instead.

“When I said ‘no’ to the Michael Jackson biopic, I’m sure they offered the job to another writer,” said Nitzberg, whose credits include the documentary “The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia.” “I have no idea what happened to the project. In Hollywood, they develop so many things that never get made. My guess is that they never cracked how to tell the story. Because no one can really know what went on in Michael’s head or house, it’s an impossible story to tell and not have it be fully, non-logically absurd.”

Rather than dodge the absurdity,...

Timothy Olyphant in Justified (2010)
Spoiler alert! If you haven’t seen Justified’s season 5 premiere, “A Murder of Crowes,” stop reading now. As he’ll do throughout the season, executive producer Graham Yost — who cowrote the episode, directed by Michael Dinner, with Ep Fred Golan — takes us inside the writers room.

Entertainment Weekly: As the writers convened for season 5, you began to talk about the things you wanted to do before the series ends its run (currently planned for six seasons). In addition to spending more time with Dewey Crowe (Damon Herriman), you wanted to pay tribute to the Crowe clan.

Questions and Answers With Sam Rockwell
Get ready to see a different side of Sam Rockwell. Well known for his goofy charm in movies such as this summer's "The Way Way Back" and as a suave bad guy in "Charlie's Angels" and "Iron Man 2," Rockwell's role in this weekend's indie "A Single Shot" could come as a shock. He plays John Moon, a West Virginian man who finds himself in a spot of trouble after he accidentally murders a young woman while hunting in the woods. Soon, he's the one being hunted.

We caught up with Rockwell prior to the movie's release, chatting on his trademark dance moves, the thick West Virginia accent he adopted for the role and the power of a good beard.

Talk to me a little bit about "A Single Shot." You're known for playing a very different kind of role than the very countrified, rough character in John Moon.

I think that I just wanted,...

Daniel Algrant’s Greetings from Tim Buckley is amongst the first films selected for distribution here in the UK by Tribeca Film, who have recently inked a deal to distribute six films on our shores.

The Tribeca Film Festival was first launched back in 2002, founded by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro, and Craig Hatkoff. And this effectively marks the first time that Tribeca Film is crossing the Atlantic, distributing its first six films on our shores through VOD.

In 1991, a young Jeff Buckley (Penn Badgley) rehearses for his public singing debut at a Brooklyn tribute show for his father, the late folk singer Tim Buckley. Struggling with the legacy of a man he barely knew, Jeff...

Cool Short Doc 'To Be Loved & Understood' on Comedian Patton Oswalt
Film fans may know Patton Oswalt as the voice of Remy the rat in Ratatouille, the lead in the indie Big Fan or the loveable townie in Young Adult, but the comedian has an amazing career as a stand-up comic, not to mention countless guest star appearances on TV. Now a cool 10-minute documentary from The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia director Julien Nitzberg turns the lens on Oswalt. Using a contrast between excited fans and the dull routine Oswalt has before his shows, the short gives a glimpse into how Oswalt crafts his stand-up material, which is some of the most brilliant comedy today. Watch it! Here's the 10-minute documentary short To Be Loved & Understood, found via The Playlist: Honestly, despite the fans love for Oswalt, it's not just "nerdy" material that makes him appealing. Oswalt has an ability to craft poignant, thought-provoking observations about nerdy topics from time-to-time,...

Indie Filmmakers Shop Small: Julien Nitzberg
Tribeca is working with American Express this holiday season to help small businesses throughout the country. You've probably heard of Black Friday and, more recently, Cyber Monday. Small Business Saturday is a promotion designed to support the small businesses that fuel our economy and invigorate communities. So, leading up to November 26, we will be shining a little extra light on the moms-and-pops whose local, independently-owned businesses deserve the attention of holiday shoppers on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and beyond. In a way, small business is akin to independent filmmaking. With that in mind, we've asked some of our Tribeca Film independent directors, producers and actors to share with us their favorite ways to 'shop small.' Over the next week or two, we'll share their recommendations and inside scoop. Happy holidays! First up: Julien Nitzberg, director of the decidedly independent documentary The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia. Could...

Johnny Knoxville and Patton Oswalt Join Untitled Todd Rohal Comedy
Patton Oswalt
Johnny Knoxville and Patton Oswalt have signed on to co-star in Todd Rohal 's latest, an outlandish yet poignant comedy about a pair of battling brothers who attempt to honor their ailing father by taking a troop of boys on a last ditch camping trip that goes wildly wrong. The film marks the first time comedic foils Johnny Knoxville and Patton Oswalt will be sharing the big screen. Joining the team for the ensemble comedy are Rob Riggle, Maura Tierney & Patrice O'Neal.&#8232

The still untitled film is written and will be directed by emerging comedic auteur Todd Rohal, hot on the heels of the Sundance success of his second feature film, The Catechism Cataclysm. The film, which is loosely based on Todd Rohal's experiences growing up, begins production this week.&#8232

The film is being financed by Marc Turtletaub 's and Peter Saraf 's Big Beach Films. Marc Turtletaub, Peter Saraf...

A Summertime Preview Of Rooftop Films
Summer has long been my favorite time of the year in NYC. When the temperature skyrockets the crowds head for the shore, leaving only us sweaty diehards to sip iced coffee in sidewalk cafes in the afternoon, and attend al fresco screenings in the heat of the night. This year, though, I’ll be getting my caffeine fix alongside De Herengracht rather than anywhere near the Hudson, and seeing outdoor cinema courtesy of Pluk de Nacht rather than Rooftop Films. But if you happen to be lucky enough to be reading this from any of the five boroughs, I suggest marking your calendar for the following Rooftop events.

Sunday, June 26th. Family Instinct (pictured) has been creating a stir at several doc fests recently — and for reasons that have little to do with the sensationalistic brother-sister marriage at the heart of Andris Gauja’s patient, slow-boiling portrait of what might...

2011 Calls For Entry: Melbourne Underground, Spooky Movie
Here are two completely groovy film festivals to submit to:

Melbourne Underground Film Festival

The Melbourne Underground Film Festival, which will be holding its 12th annual edition in 2011. Yes, the festival is still going on, even with the harassment by the Australian government of the fest’s director, Richard Wolstencroft. Looking on the bright side, it’s a good PR slogan: The underground festival even the government doesn’t want you to see!

Muff has been pushing for a return to glory of Australian genre cinema for the past 11 years and now with the Aussie crime flick Animal Kingdom up for an Oscar this year, that push is starting to see some results. While Muff didn’t program that particular film itself last year, the official lineup shows they did have the world-wide horror hit El Monstro Del Mar! by Stuart Simpson and other Australian films of note such as...

Documentaries Of The Edge
The critically and publicly acclaimed second edition of the Documentaries From The Edge series proved last year that it holds a distinguished place at Fantasia. This section returns this summer with five debut films taking on curious and disturbing social phenomena. A debate over a video game, a modern out-law family, a site dedicated to fetishism, a passion for a lemon, and a mysterious notebook are all subjects that have fascinated the directors and touched them intimately. These captivating documentaries demand that the audience take a stand on what is presented to them on screen. This year, the line-up will feature five docs that impart the unique and unequivocal points of view of filmmakers on some disturbing social phenomena that will leave no one indifferent and promises to spark a few fascinating and contradictory debates. Although the premises vary drastically on the surface, from a portrait of a modern day...

Thursday Trailers: The Wild And Wonderful Whites Of West Virginia
Reality proves to be infinitely stranger than fiction in this jaw-dropping documentary that will forever corrupt your interpretation of "family values". At first glance, the White family seems taken straight out of Devil's Rejects. Hated by policemen, politicians and many neighbors, they live in the Appalachian Mountains and daily break every conceivable law. A doco-companion to White Lightnin' (also presented at Fantasia this Summer), this astounding and touching documentary was produced in part by Jackass creators Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine. A major audience-shocker at Tribeca.

Laff 09: Review of The Wild And Wonderful Whites Of West Virginia
Year: 2009

Directors: Julien Nitzberg

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: cyberhal

Rating: 8 out of 10

The White clan are West Virginia’s most psychotic, fun living, pill popping, gun toting and just plain dangerous family ever. “Boy, this is how we do it hillbilly style” says one of the clan as he blows stuff away with a rifle in the backyard. There are loads of people in the White clan, and I could barely understand their thick Appalachian accents, but I have to tell you, I love these people. A beautiful toxic tonic to the fake drivel that make up the Kardashians. An inspiration to anarchists everywhere, and also to people who think that Ozzy Osbourne turned into a giant pansy. The doc. was the brainchild of Johnny Knoxville of Jackass fame, and MTV stumped up the finance.

You might have already heard of Jesco White, son of the mountain dancing legend D.
