Proving there is more to Australian wildlife than Kangaroos and Koalas, this remarkable film is quite enchanting. Eschewing the bombastic music and cliched narration of most modern day nature spectaculars, this beautifully made and heartfelt film goes about its business with calm and careful story telling. It's messages about conservation and our need to find ways of living with wildlife are not shoved down the throat, but rather delivered with genuine heart by the presenter and filmmaker Simon Plowright.
Plowright makes a seemingly crazy decision to live on an abandoned farm in a hidden valley in remote Tasmania, in order to better observe and understand the local wildlife.and there he finds a remarkable animal, the little marsupial Quoll, a cute and endearing creature that is little studied or observed.
Plowright manages to capture intimate moments with his quolls, who come to accept his presence without concern. I'm fact for the most part they ignore him, which for the audience allows us a remarkable insight into their lives.
Without fuss,( but still beautifully crafted,with a fabulous nostalgic score from composer Maria Grenfell) this film is a must watch for audiences of all ages. And how many programs are like that anymore?
