A western serie told in a poetic way.....

Has now seen 8 episodes of season 1 via Paramount + (Operator Telia in Sweden).

I became curious about the series when I watched the last episodes of Yellowstone. Just the fact that it is Taulor Sheridan who produced and wrote the script, means that you only have to see the series.

And you will not be disappointed. Not at all. Like a poetic western where the action takes place with a multitude of people on their way to the goal of their dreams but on unknown ground.

The filming is a little different than Yellowstone but that's uninteresting.

One detail I noticed but which can be overlooked, is that the women which are in the center have very "clean eyes".

Do not think that they are out on a very dirty trip when not having dirty faces/eyes, as the men have.

Another thing is the research of how they talked to each other in American / English then (was it called "American / English" then?).

Did you talk that way or did the words sound like that?

My question has to do with the Swedish film "Nybyggarna / Jan Troell" where they looked at how the Swedish language sounded in the middle of the 19th century and what they knew then about the English / American language.

Next week (March 14, 2022) I will buy a subscription to Paramount + and watch Season 1 and also Season 2.

    Excellent opening

Loved the theme, the script and most importantly the camera work!

Episode was a little slow, but not at all boring. A slow burn if you know what im saying and you can till that this show will be filled with drama.

    Unique!

It was beautifully shot and it showed a side of westerns that we don't usually get to see. Sam Elliot is perfect in this, and I can't wait to see where it's going. Normally prologues don't pull me in, but this one did.

    Hell's Half Acre

We know, by now, quite a few things to expect from Taylor Sheridan: a leisurely, not boring, story-telling pace; stunning scenery; grim stories; interesting and often unlikeable characters.

With the opening episode of 1883, one of the biggest negatives of 'Yellowstone' (to which this series is the prequel), which is that there are no likable characters, is removed. We're instantly drawn to several of the characters. Sam Elliott, as always, is outstanding. LaMonica Garrett looks very interesting. Isabel May, is a delightful free spirit on a journey of discovery.

But why two Country music singers? (Tim McGraw and Faith Hill). They're not terrible, but why not use any of the dozens of actors/actresses who would be better? A mystery.

But, I'm drawn in and looking forward to more.

    Certainly very powerful

This is indeed one of the best shows going to be aired I look forward for the rest of the episodes as this powerful opening premiere is actually makes you want to know what's next.

    I loved the settings.

    • Trivia
The Sam Elliott character tells the immigrants they are fools for having oxen for their train rather than horses. The truth is that most pioneers used oxen rather than horses for pulling their wagons west, unlike the depiction in most westerns. Oxen are slower but better suited for such a trip because they are stronger, able to endure under duress, are less picky eaters, are more sure-footed, can better pull fully loaded wagons up mountains, are less easily spooked, and, upon arrival at a destination, would be better suited to farm life.
    • Goofs
When speaking German, one of the immigrants says "alles okay" to his fellow German speakers. The expression "okay" would not enter the German language from English until the 1950s, after the US WWII occupation of Germany.
    • Quotes

Elsa Dutton: Nothing had prepared me, no books, no teachers, not even my parents. I heard a thousand stories, but none could describe this place, it must be witnessed, to be understood, and yet I've seen it and understand it even less than before I first cast eyes on this place. Some call it the American dessert, others The Great Plains, but those phrases were invented by professors at universities surrounded by the illusion of order and the fantasy of right and wrong. To know it you must walk it, Bleed into its dirt, drown in its rivers, then its name becomes clear, it is hell, and there are demons everywhere. But if this is hell and I'm in it, then I must be a Demon too and I'm already dead.
