This was a brilliant episode. This shows what can be done when people love their craft and want to show the world what's possible. Although it may not have been the funniest or the most exciting episode I think it was brilliantly done and as well worth the effort of watching this type of episode. Highly recommend the whole show it's great I hope the final three are just as wonderful.
To use the writer's favorite word - f***! This episode had so much packed into it - and all with no dialog. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. We have all become use to multi-tasking while watching TV, but not during this episode. I was focused only on the story unfolding.
Phenomenal. Based on Theo's perspective, this episode does an incredible job moving the plot forward, maintaining a breakneck pace, giving us answers while creating more suspense, and showing us interesting details of both characters and the social dynamics that lie beneath their actions. And ALL in near silence, save for a few instances of music or diegetic sound! The use of silence not just in Theo's scenes but in every scene was brilliant and a very unique concept that we don't see much on television. Nathan Lane and James Caverly were, of course, stand outs.
We are introduced to a deaf character, so most of the episode is done in silence. There is a great deal of signing. I thought it was quite creative. The question I would as is, "Could one get to the same end by a different road? Nathan Lane continues to be wonderful in a non-comedic role. He is a force to be reckoned with.
I'm surprised, or maybe not, at all the negative posts about this episode being made from the perspective of a deaf person (ie all in subtitles). I suppose this is the same crowd that would say Parasite or any number of marvelous foreign-language films are lame just because you have to read. Do books without pictures suck too? A good, thought-provoking story is engaging regardless of the medium, and I actually like how they switch up the narrator / POV throughout this show to help fill in the blanks bit by bit (has a Rashomon feel to it). Of all the things to get up in arms about...folks even managed to come here and write words about how mad they were that they had to read words. One thing we can agree on though, if you're not invested in the characters and story enough by now to make it through 25 min of limited subtitles, then it's best to move on (preferably without bashing a good show). I wouldn't want the show to be influenced by these crap critiques.
