More fun than a barrel of hammers

This is not a complaint — nor is IMDb really a forum for complaints — but TV, as good as it is, is not much fun anymore.

I am not talking about the comedies, I am talking about the dramas. They have become really dark. Brilliantly written, fascinating, but dark. If you want to see how TV used to treat an action series, look at the original Avengers (with Diana Rigg) or even Wild Wild West.

The reason I mention that is that when this episode ended I noticed I had a big smile on my face. At first I did not know what had happened to my mouth because — see above — modern TV is seldom fun. I watch a lot but I don't smile a lot.

But this episode was fun. Great writing, direction, acting. Joanne Kelly really gets to strut her stuff in a dual role and if her acting career ever gets old, she should take a contract with Revlon.

    Recommended.

    Myka exposed

Pete and Myka are on the trail of something that is bringing phenomenal luck to a couple gambling in Las Vegas. Only problem is, that's not Myka traveling with Pete. It is an evil entity named Alice that has swapped places with Myka in a warehoused mirror that belonged to Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, author of THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS and ALICE IN WONDERLAND. And the entity will kill Pete and anyone else who stands in its way. Kelly as the evil Alice gets to vamp it up, wearing a barely-there cocktail dress and briefly playing tonsil hockey with a bewildered Pete. Too bad Kelly is so doggone skinny. A bony actress playing sexy is very hard to take seriously. OK episode in this unfortunately toothless series. Come on, Warehouse 13 preducers, we need more violence and killing and occasional blood-spilling! If we want "safe" thrillers, we can always turn to The Family Channel or Ion Television or even The Hallmark Channel.

    • Trivia
After Myka asks about the Dark Vault, Pete says, "it's better than the 'oy gevalt' " and he and Artie laugh. "Oy gevalt" is a Yiddish phrase which means, roughly: "Oh, God!" or "woe is me."
    • Goofs
When Myka is released from the mirror, Pete and Artie cover the mirror up with a cloth. Pete places a chest on the floor in front of it. When he sets the chest down, he knocks the cloth off the mirror. In the next shot showing Pete, Artie and Myka covering the mirror back up, the chest is gone. It then returns in front of the mirror in the next shot.
    • Quotes

Artie Nielsen: [rapidly] Don't dawdle. Stay in touch. Good-bye.

      Pete Lattimer: Kirk out.

    • Alternate versions
During the original airing and on initial online streaming on Hulu, the Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" played during the climax. The activation of the "Studio 54 Disco Ball" was accompanied by Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive". Both pieces of music have been replaced by original score on later streams on Hulu and the iTunes version of the episode.
