In the 1970s-1980s, over 25,000 East German workers left their homeland to build a gigantic gas pipeline in the Soviet Union, which was to become the largest in the world. For them, it was the adventure of a lifetime: the route crossed wilderness and great rivers, and the experience, generously remunerated, gave them a sense of freedom. However, they had to brave difficult conditions, from loneliness to the political surveillance exercised by the East German state right up to the construction site.
