Netflix has announced new Korean action film Mantis (working title), a spinoff of the 2023 feature Kill Boksoon.
The film will star Yim Si-wan, Park Gyu-young and Jo Woo-jin.
Mantis is set in the same contract killer world as Kill Boksoon, which premiered at the Berlinale last year. Yim will play the role of Han-ul, an ace assassin also known as “Mantis,” working for Mk Ent. The character Mantis was briefly mentioned by Kill Boksoon‘s Cha Min-kyu to “have gone on a vacation,” and this spinoff will trace Mantis’ return to the industry in search of new opportunities.

Narcos inspired a wave of TV series about the dark and criminal world of drug lords, like Weeds and Breaking Bad. Shows like Narco-Saints, La Reina Del Sur, and Boardwalk Empire offer similar thematic elements and engrossing storytelling. Crime dramas like Gomorrah, El Chapo, and Ozark provide a gritty and realistic look at the drug trade with complex characters.
Thanks to shows like Narcos, audiences have fallen in love with TV series about the dark and criminal world associated with drug lords. Shows with criminals and bad guys as the main characters are nothing new, as The Sopranos was the hottest show on HBO at one time and The Shield brought crooked cops to network TV. However, in the case of Narcos, it was a little different. The bad guys leading the way in this show were all based on real people mafia bosses and drug lords who got rich...

Currently revelling in the success of recently-uploaded Don Lee-starring film “Badland Hunters” and already teasing the second season of “Squid Game,” Netflix has unveiled a major slate of Korean films and series for 2024.
In August last year, Netflix publicly committed to investing $2.5 billion on Korean content over the next four years. That reflected both Netflix’s position as the country’s leading streamer, with an estimated 6.5 million subscribers, and its adopted role as one of the biggest exporters of Korean film and TV content.
“We were able to make this [investment] decision because we have great confidence that the Korean creative industry will continue to tell great stories,” said the streamer’s co-chief Ted Sarandos at the time of the spending commitment.
The Tuesday reveal is a mix of: first-look images and updates for previously announced projects (including the retitled Park Chan-wook-produced film “Uprising” and the second season...

Disney’s Kdrama, The Worst of Evil has probably left a narcotic-sized hole in your hearts, especially with that ending. Grandiose in its presentation, set in late 90s Seoul, The Worst of Evil is visually charming while also delivering a well-crafted story that is emotional and thrilling at the same time. Yeah, it’s nothing new, but the show goes beyond what is expected from it. The fantastic cast plays the biggest role in making this work, and the chemistry between all members is palpable. The Worst of Evil is directed with finesse; even the classic Korean beauty shot feels more raw and eerie with the setting of the late 90s. Some scenes are unforgettable, and we have to talk about the costume design, which is absolutely flawless. Did anybody else want all the suits for themselves? We’ve compiled a list that includes worldwide shows that cover similar themes...

Here's a guide to the Squid Game cast and what else the actors have taken part in. Netflix's explosive series is backed by a stellar cast of South Korean actors, each well-suited to play their respective characters. Squid Game's characters are pitted against hundreds of highly desperate and indebted people in a series of playground games for children. And in each game, the price of failure is death. Set in and around modern-day Seoul, South Korea, Squid Game puts its own uniquely horrific twists on familiar gaming elements from Battle Royale, The Hunger Games, and the Saw movies.
Every member of the Squid Game cast of main characters loosely represents a slice of modern society. In this nine-episode dystopian drama, rich and poor Squid Game players alike compete for the ultimate prize: billions of Korean won – more than enough to pay off their debts and start anew. The players form alliances,...

Netflix still spends a small fortune on content. But relatively speaking, the streamer in 2022 kept a lid on payments for TV shows and movies — underscoring that the days of runaway spending on programming are behind it.
Last year, the streamer paid out 16.84 billion on a cash basis for content, which was 4.9 less than in 2021, when it shelled out 17.70 billion, according to Netflix’s financial statements released Thursday for its fourth-quarter earnings report.
Netflix’s content obligations — payments for the acquisition, licensing and production of content over multiyear periods — also declined last year, dropping 5.7, from 23.16 billion to 21.83 billion.
The steady-state in content spending, along with other cost reductions (including layoffs and slower hiring), led Netflix to project a “sustained” trajectory of growth in free cash flow. “Now that we are a decade into our original programming initiative and have successfully scaled it, we are past the most cash-intensive phase of this buildout,...

Lee Sang-yong’s 2022 feature, The Roundup, had many twists and turns before it was finally released in South Korean theaters in May. The production originally began in 2019, but filming was temporarily postponed, as location permits did not come through in Vietnam, where the story is mostly set, because of the pandemic. The industry’s old saying that “no sequel is better than its prequel” put even more pressure on Lee, who was an assistant director on the film’s precursor, 2017’s The Outlaws, about an old-school detective taking down a ruthless gangster in Seoul’s Chinatown.

Netflix has taken peak TV to a new peak.
In a data point sure to fuel more quantity-versus-quality debate, Netflix broke its own record for number of original episodes released in a single quarter — with 1,026 in the third quarter of 2022, according to a tally by Wall Street firm MoffettNathanson.
That’s more than five times any other streaming rival: Amazon Prime Video and Hulu released 223 and 194 episodes, respectively, and Disney+ debuted 140 original episodes, per the report. HBO Max, now owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, released 114 episodes in the third quarter — significantly fewer episodes than usual and comprising the lightest slate for the service since Q2 2020, the second quarter after launch. Wbd has been paring back HBO Max’s content slate in recent months as it looks to cut costs.
All told, Netflix premiered 159 original and exclusive shows in Q3, topping its previous high-water mark of 143 in Q4 2021 (which totaled nearly...

The government of Suriname is considering taking legal action against the producers of Netflix’s new Korean original series Narco-Saints over the way the country is portrayed in the show.
Released globally last week, Narco-Saints is loosely based on real-life events from the early 2000s. The show, titled Suriname in Korea, tells the story of an ordinary entrepreneur who risks his life to join a secret mission to capture a Korean drug lord operating in the Latin American country. The show was created by acclaimed filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin (The Spy Gone North) and stars Ha Jung-woo (Ashfall, Entourage).
But the government of Suriname says Netflix has gone too far in portraying the country as a “narco-state,” with story elements that highlight outdated “crime and cross-border activities” that the people of Suriname have worked hard to expunge.

The first of the streaming service’s high-profile films, set to arrive in the tail-end of the year, will be Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, starring Ana de Armas.
Elsewhere, there is a bunch of non-Netflix films set to be added over the course of the month, as well as the return of everyone’s favourite Karate Kid spin-off TV series.
This list has been compiled by The Independent, with additional assistance from the team at What’s on Netflix – and you can find the full compilation of everything being removed this month here.

Korean TV powerhouse Jtbc is upping its game and changing its name in order to stay at the forefront of the worldwide Korean content explosion.
While the parent broadcast group will keep the Jtbc monicker, its 15-strong cluster of production companies have been renamed Studio LuluLaLa, or Sll, instead of the prosaic Jtbc Studios. The word ‘Lululala’ is used in Korea to express joy and adventure. And it translates easily enough.
More persuasive is the KRW3 trillion (2.4 billion) that Sll is now promising to put into content production over the three years 2022-2024.
That number, revealed at a press event this week, compares with the 500 million that Netflix committed to spending in Korea in 2021 and the 4.4 billion that Cj Enm says it will spend over the five years between 2021 and 2025. (Regional research firm Media Partners Asia this month forecast that Netflix would increase its investment and pump 750 million into Korean content in the current year.

Rebranded studio to produce TV and film content for global audience
Major South Korean drama production studio Sll – formerly known as Jtbc Studios – is set to invest 2.4bn (KW3 trillion) in TV and film production over the next three years.
At a press conference in Seoul yesterday (April 19), CEO Jung Kyung Moon said he aims to rival BBC Studios as a leading production entity by the end of 2024.
Expanding Sll’s business in the US and Asia, he aims for the company to generate revenues of about 1.6bn - of which 40 would come from overseas - in that year with 50-60 titles.
