There really was an outlaw named Juro Janosik. He was born in Slovakia in 1688 and was executed in 1713. In the Slovakian and Polish regions where he operated, he was regarded as a local hero, stealing from the rich to give to the poor.
Janosik: A True Story (also known as Janosik. Prawdziwa historia (2009)) is a Polish, Czech, Slovak historical film about Slovak National hero highwayman Juraj Janosik. It was directed by Agnieszka Holland and her daughter Kasia Adamik, and released in 2009. It was written by Eva Borusovicová and starring Václav Jirácek and Sarah Zoe Canner.
PROLOGUE: "The borderland of Poland and in present day Slovakia. The uprising led by Francis Rakoczi against the Hapsburgs is dying out ... Imperial troops are hunting down the last of the insurgents."
A similar film is Janosik (1974), a Polish TV series directed by Jerzy Passendorfer. It is about a famous Goral outlaw (named after, but not actually the legendary Slovak Juraj Janosik) who in folk legends, like Robin Hood, steals money and goods from the rich and helps out the poor.
