TIFF flashback: Oscars have looked to Toronto International Film Festival for decades
Image
As the Venice International Film Festival is winding down, the Toronto International Film festival kicks off Sept. 10 and continues through Sept. 19 in a Covid-19 hybrid version with physical screenings and drive-in, digital screenings and virtual red carpets. Whereas Venice is the oldest film festival having begun in 1932, Toronto is relatively new. In fact, it wasn’t even called the Toronto International Film Festival until 1994.

The festival was the brainchild of founders Bill Marshall, Dusty Cohl and Henk Van Der Kolk who launched the inaugural Festival of Festivals in 1976. The mandate was to feature the best pics from other film festivals and to attract major Hollywood productions by being one of the most hospitable movie celebrations.

The first edition of the festival didn’t set the world on fire. Guests Jack Nicholson and Julie Christie never made it. The festival had hoped to open with Hal Ashby’s biopic on Woody Guthrie,...

Girlfriend (2010)
Review: Christine & the Queens Sly, Seductive ‘Chris’
Girlfriend (2010)
“Yes sir, I am wet,” declares Hélöise Letissier on “Girlfriend,” a non-binary lust-fest with slithering keytar from Cali synth scientist Dâm-Funk. The lead single from the French pop heroine’s second album under the moniker Christine & The Queens arrived with a striking video – the only sort Letissier makes – riffing visually off Charles C. Ebbets’ famous 1932 photograph Lunch Atop A Skyscraper, full of muscular choreography, the singer conjuring vintage Madonna with a touch of Jean-Paul Belmondo and rebranding Christine as Chris, a roughneck in a wifebeater who doesn’t so much blur genders as transcend them.

Review: Mnek’s Hook-Deficient Debut ‘Language’
Mnek’s debut album, Language, comes with a statement of purpose: “It’s time to step up to the front now, so you can hear me out.”

The 23-year-old writer-producer Uzoechi Emenike may feel that this introduction is necessary, because he’s spent a number of years holed up in the studio penning hits for a slew of English acts, including Duke Dumont, Dua Lipa and Rudimental. American listeners are less likely to know Mnek’s work, though he wrote on Madonna’s Rebel Heart and Beyoncé’s “Hold Up.

Joshua Reviews Justin Lerner’s The Automatic Hate [Theatrical Review]
With SXSW 2016 beginning this weekend, film fans will descend upon Austin, Texas to see some of the latest, and hopefully greatest, films that studios and distributors have come down the pipeline. However, not every film that plays this prestigious festival, even those that become buzzed about hits, end up getting a speedy release. Take Justin Lerner’s The Automatic Hate for example.

Becoming something of a small hit at last year’s festival, Lerner’s new film is finally arriving in theaters on March 11 thanks to Film Movement, and will hopefully find an eager audience going forward.

His follow-up to 2010’s oddly magnetic Girlfriend, a film that’s an engaging piece of craft more than it is a genuinely great narrative feature, Automatic Hate is a beast of a different color. Davis Green (played by Joseph Cross) is an unassuming chef in the throes of what may or may not...

Ifp Gotham Awards: Reflections From Audience Award Winner Justin Lerner
In early 2009 I took my childhood friend Evan Sneider, a 31 year-old with Down Syndrome, out to lunch to see whether he’d be interested in letting me write a feature length film for him to star in, Girlfriend.

“It’s going to be a little dark, Evan,” I said to him. “There’s going to be violence, and maybe even a little sex.”

“That’s fine with me,” Evan said with a smile while finishing a steak and cheese pizza. “Sounds like fun.”

Five months after that lunch we were casting the other roles and had found three willing actors – Shannon Woodward, Amanda Plummer, and Jackson Rathbone – to act alongside Evan and a group of non-professionals I hand-picked from our hometown of Wayland, Massachusetts.

Four months after that we were shooting, and year after that we were world premiering at the 2010 Toronto Int’l Film Festival.

And then, another year and some film festivals later,...

Gotham Awards Cop Out and Declare a Tie Between 'Beginners' and 'Tree of Life' for Best Feature
I hate ties when it comes to handing out awards, especially if you're going to hold an actual awards show. What's the point in declaring the best of something if you can't determine what the best is? That said, I guess it can be looked at as something of a surprise when the 21st annual Gotham Independent Awards hand Best Feature to The Tree of Life and Beginners considering I think most felt The Descendants had it in the bag. And yet, that's not the end of the surprises. Beginners also scored Best Ensemble over the likes of The Descendants and Margin Call, both of which have been praised for their ensemble performances. The buzz this generates for Beginners should certainly help it on its way through Oscar season, hopefully keeping Christopher Plummer's supporting performance a front-runner for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars. Breakthrough Actor is a bit...

‘Beginners’ and ‘Tree Of Life’ Split The Honours For Best Feature At The 2011 Gotham Awards
While the reviews for Beginners were almost all positive, very few people have had a chance to see the film. I myself watch over 100 new releases each year and it still took me a few months to catch up on the movie. I finally got around to seeing Beginners this week and called it the most overlooked film of 2011. I guess I can no longer say this. Last night, the Gotham Independent Film Awards surprised everyone with a tie for Best Feature Film with Mike Mills‘ Beginners and Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life taking the top prize. Who would have ever guessed?

Best Feature winners from the past several years include Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, and The Hurt Locker. Hit the jump for the full press release.

"Beginners" and "The Tree of Life" tie for Best Film at the Gotham Awards
Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Mélanie Laurent, and Cosmo in Beginners (2010)
The Gotham Awards mark the unofficial beginning of awards season so it's actually kind of appropriate that the big winner at this year's Gothams was a movie called "Beginners." Mike Mills' autobiographical story of a dying father and his grieving son scored two awards at tonight's Gotham Awards: one for Best Ensemble Performance and one for Best Film. In an usual twist, "Beginners"' Best Film award was actually shared with another movie, Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life." The oh-so-rare awards season tie was a result of the way the Gothams use small juries of filmmakers and industry professionals rather than a large body of voters to select their winners. According to indieWIRE, the Best Film jurors deliberated for two and a half hours before finally settling on the cinematic equivalent of a hung jury.

In general, it was a night of many surprises at the show.

‘Beginners’ & ‘The Tree of Life’ Tie For Best Feature at 2011 Gotham Awards
They couldn’t choose between just two. At the 2011 Gotham Awards the jury announced they couldn’t possible choose one over the other and made the unprecedented decision to award Best Feature to Mike Mills‘ Beginners and Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life, the latter of which topped Sight & Sound’s year-end list. The duo beat out Alexander Payne‘s The Descendants, widely considered a frontrunner and take the prize that Debra Granik picked up last year for Winter’s Bone.

Mills’ film also picked up best ensemble, which included Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Mélanie Laurent, Goran Visnjic, Kai Lennox, Mary Page Keller and Keegan Boos. In a disappointing turn, Felicity Jones in Like Crazy beat out my personal best actress pick of Elizabeth Olsen in Martha Marcy May Marlene. Girlfriend (2010)
Review of Jackson Rathbone’s ‘Girlfriend’
Girlfriend (2010)
We have a special treat for you tonight, with a fantastic review of Jackson Rathbone’s movie, Girlfriend. The review is written for Ta by our very own Becky, perhaps better known as Becky in Philly to many who know her here. Enjoy the Girlfriend review below, and then find a way to watch the movie!

Girlfriend is the story of a young man named Evan, with Down Syndrome, whose wish is for a love affair. When his mother dies, he is left on

his own and he decides to use money left by his mother to help a former classmate, Candy, played by Shannon Woodward, who is struggling to raise her son and deal with her ex-boyfriend, Russ, played by Jackson Rathbone.

The movie follows a series of choices Candy, Russ, and others around Evan make that in some way affect him. Some choose to use him, others choose to ignore or dislike him, though some choose to be his friend. The film is a lesson on how we treat others and how they in return treat us. It is compelling and gripping, drawing you into Evan’s life and those around him.

Newcomer Evan Sneider plays the role of Evan as if he were a well-versed actor. He is, at times, the innocence in a sea of people that only want things from each other and will use any means they can to get it. You feel the loneliness Evan feels as he goes about his life with people all around him that don’t have the time for him or don’t want him around. You feel the frustration he has with his own physical limitations and people’s perceptions of those with disabilities. You feel his utter sadness at the loss of his mother and his want to seek solace and comfort in someone.

Woodward’s Candy is trying to protect her son, while at the same time making bad choices about the men in her life. She struggles with trying to understand Evan’s interest in her but chooses to play along with him, thinking he doesn’t understand her actions, and uses him to her own advantage.

Rathbone plays the role of bad boy Russ well. He makes you dislike Russ, giving him a smarmy smile and a condescending attitude. Russ’ only interest in Evan is to use him to get to Candy.

An award winner at Tiff ’10, the movie has been high anticipated and very well reviewed. The movie enjoyed an extended run at the Quad Cinema in New York City in July. It has been shown at a number of film festivals around the world including Ireland, Portugal, and Russia as well as a number of festivals here in the Us. It recently won Best Narrative Feature and Best of Festival at the Woods Hole Film Festival in Massachusetts. The movie was filmed outside of Boston.

On September 16, there will be a showing at the Cornell Cinema, the Cornell University Film School’s year round film festival. You can check out more here.

On September 21, Girlfriend will make its Los Angeles premiere at the Downtown Independent Theater to be followed by a Q & A and then a rooftop after party DJ’d by Jackson Rathbone. Find out more here.

The film will also have a showing on Friday, October 21, in Auburn Hills, Mi to benefit the Spencer Bell Endowment fund at the University of Michigan.

Check out Girlfriend Motion Picture for more info!

Many, many thanks to Ta’s own Becky for her fantastic review and constant work to get Girlfriend the attention it deserves!

What happens when Jackson Rathbone faces a clueless interview
Jackson Rathbone
Want to hear what happens when Jackson Rathbone faces a rather clueless interview? Well, by all means, proceed to the video section of the sidebar and take a listen.

Now, we've seen before how capable Rathbone is at handling interviews which come apart at the seams. Usually, it becomes pretty funny. Remember when he was in New York in mid-July and the anchor ended up just giving Jackson Rathbone her earpiece? Yeah, see, he was cute about it and brushed it all off and the interview still wound up being fine.

This one, I feel like, has Rathbone in a corner. Clearly, he was speaking to the station on behalf of Girlfriend, his independent film which is trickling through local theaters, but the conversation got a little

Jackson Rathbone Talks “Good Vampires” and ‘Girlfriend’ to Kiss 108 FM
Girlfriend (2010)
Jackson Rathbone recently did what turned out to be a rather obnoxious interview with Kiss 108 FM. Even though the host of the show continually went off track with the actor-musician, getting completely sidetracked with his “good vampire” bit, Jackson continued to get back on track and really promote his movie, Girlfriend. Check out the interview below:

(Thanks Noor!)

Wow, that radio host was really just kind of rude to Jackson. I was amazed at how well Jackson just completely kept his cool and went back to the what he was supposed to, and promote Girlfriend. I love that Jackson really chose to shine the light on Evan, the star of Girlfriend, and kept pushing the host to listen to what he had to say about him.

Way to go Jackson! What did you think of this interview? Do you think the radio host was too obnoxious or did you enjoy his banter?...

Review: 'Girlfriend' tells uneasy story of love and kindness with unlikely star
It's not often that I can honestly say that a movie strikes me as completely original, but that is true of Justin Lerner's new film "Girlfriend," opening today in New York.  It's the sort of film I have trouble even assigning a genre as I watch it, and I strongly encourage you to get out and support this tiny indie right now while you can, and maybe we'll see this one get a wider release, which it absolutely deserves. I'm curious what the order of events was for this one.  The lead in the movie, Evan Sneider, is a young man...

$500 buys a Pa spot on Wayne/Lauren Film Company’s next production
By Kim Palacios

hollywoodnews.com: It’s an untraditional—but creative—way to raise funds for an indie film needing wider distribution. Yet, the Wayne/Lauren Film Company, the production house for “Girlfriend”, is now taking donations. Its goal is to raise $110,000 in order to make the film available to a wider audience. The film did well at the Toronto International Film Festival, but has few current prospects for wider screening. A $500 donation buys a Pa spot on the production company’s next film.

Its fundraising technique isn’t the only characteristic that makes this film unique. “Girlfriend” is the first American film to cast an actor with Down’s Syndrome in a leading role. The part is played by Ben Sneider, as Evan, a man who seeks the affection of Candy (Shannon Woodward), a single mother who has fallen upon hard times. In addition to financial woes, Candy finds...

Help Jackson Rathbone’s ‘Girlfriend’ Reach a Wider Audience
Girlfriend (2010)
MTV has a great article talking about how Jackson Rathbone’s indie hit Girlfriend is having some money troubles and limiting the number of people who see the movie. To help the film reach as wide of an audience as possible, the producers of Girlfriend have set up a fundraising page. Read more below:

Sometimes, critical acclaim, online buzz and a “Twilight” star just aren’t enough for an indie film to reach a wider audience. Such is the case with the Toronto International Film Festival hit “Girlfriend,” starring Shannon Woodward (“Raising Hope”), Evan Sneider (the first lead feature film actor with Down’s Syndrome) and some guy you may have heard of named Jackson Rathbone.

As a way to get their film to as wide an audience as possible, the producers of “Girlfriend” created their own fundraising page on IndieGoGo.com. It’s pretty simple: The adoring public spares some cash, and the producers will use that money to hold more screenings of the film in theaters, on demand and online.

In a statement exclusive to Hollywood Crush, “Girlfriend” producers Justin Lerner (who also directed the movie), Jerad Anderson, Kristina Lauren Anderson and Shaun O’Banion explained why they created the site.

“As many people know, the costs of finishing a film, making prints, submitting to festivals, as well as publicity and marketing (the big one) are, as Kevin Smith pointed out at Sundance this year, sometimes more costly than an indie film’s entire budget. Therein lies the dilemma for a complex, artistic, intelligent film like ours,” they wrote.

Kim Talks with Jackson Rathbone About His New Film Girlfriend, Music & Other Projects
Exclusive: The actor/musician/songwriter who played the role of Jasper Hale in the popular vampire series, as well as Sokka in the Last Airbender film, is currently producing a new film while still working with his band 100 Monkeys. Jackson's latest project, Girlfriend, is about a young man with Down's Syndrome named Evan. Evan romantically pursues a small town single mom named Candy, who is still mixed up with her volatile ex-boyfriend Russ. Not only did the actor play the part of Russ, he also served as a producer and as the film's composer. "I was approached by my bandmate Jerad Anderson who put most of the pieces together for the film before bringing me into the picture. As producer, actor and composer I was able to bring an overall thematic element to the film that I would not have...

Because filming a blockbuster film, working on a new album and going on tour apparently aren't keeping him busy enough, Jackson Rathbone has decided to set up his own record label, too. In an interview with Zooey magazine, Rathbone revealed that he'll soon be known for the artists he helps develop, as well as for his acting and his own music.

The multitasking star best known for portraying of Jasper Hale in "The Twilight Saga" is currently filming "Breaking Dawn" in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and also is working on finishing his next album with his rock group, 100 Monkeys. His fellow bandmates went with him to the movie set so that they could complete the album and kick off a 10-day tour starting after Christmas.

Jackson Rathbone and the 100 Monkeys on Baton Rouge news
Jackson Rathbone
Jackson Rathbone and his band 100 Monkeys are in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, working on their second album, “Liquid Zoo,” and they stopped by a local news program to talk about, among other things, the theory behind the band’s name, their intense schedule, and how at least one of their gigs in the area has been for the benefit of a local high school.

You can check out their interview in the attached video.

As mentioned, the guys are sort of “nomads” at the moment, since they’ve been stationed in so many different regions of the country over the last few years, but – and this seemed to go without saying in this interview at least – they’re probably in Baton Rouge at the moment to support Rathbone’s filming needs for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2. They kept together throughout New Moon,...

Jackson Rathbone and Nikki Reed Talk Breaking Dawn and More at the 2010 Scream Awards
At last night’s Scream Awards, I managed to interview both Jackson Rathbone and Nikki Reed on the red carpet before the show. At first I didn’t know Nikki Reed was there as the interview started with Rathbone. However, a minute or so in, Reed snuck her way in and that’s when I tried to find out how The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn is going. They revealed filming hasn’t yet begun on the final installment, but they both called the script “amazing.” They also don’t know when they start yet. In case you’re not aware, Rathbone plays Jasper Hale and Reed plays Rosalie Hale.

Rathbone also talked about his band 100 Monkeys and how Reed is going to direct an upcoming video for the band. Hit the jump to watch the interview. It’s time indexed so you can watch the parts that interest you:

’Twilight’ star Jackson Rathbone does GoDaddy.com commercial with 100 Monkeys
Jackson Rathbone
Jackson Rathbone ("Jasper Hale" in the Twilight Saga films) is definitely a unique guy. He's multi-talented, humble, and witty to boot. So, to see that he's joined his bandmates from the 100 Monkeys in a new GoDaddy.com commercial isn't terribly surprising at all.

The group traveled together to promote Girlfriend (which stars Rathbone and Jared Anderson - also from the band) at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival in Canada, and new tour dates for their concert series have been announced here.

This isn't the first com ...
