'The Secret Behind Escape (2008)' is a featurette available on the 'Escape From The Planet Of The Apes (1971)' Blu-ray that explores the production of that film via talking heads and some behind-the-scenes footage. Unfortunately, it doesn't feature many interviews from people involved with the picture, instead primarily including film historians and Kim Hunter's son. The first half talks about the film and its themes, but then the short takes a diversion into being entirely about Kim Hunter for a while in a way that feels almost like a commemoration. It isn't a bad segment, of course, but it's a notable change of pace and feels like it could've been its own piece. The featurette - unexpectedly narrated by James Brolin - briefly touches on Roddy McDowell, but only really through the lens of Kim Hunter's relationship to him. I would've liked more of a focus on him as well as Hunter, since they're both the heart of the movie. I would've also liked more first-hand information about the production and behind-the-scenes stories, as the short ultimately feels like an entirely surface-level retrospective that hardly lives up to its title. It's entertaining enough, but it isn't especially insightful. Still, as just one part of a wider set of bonus material, it's a solid inclusion on the home-media release that fans of the 'Planet Of The Apes' franchise should enjoy.
