Come Outside

This review is for the 83 minute film, Come Outside (2022).

First, hats off to filmmakers of color. Way to make a way for yourself and thank you to Tubi for supporting Black films. Also, kudos for thinking outside of the box with regard to plot and ideas.

That being said, what in the entire world is this??? It feels like there was significantly more background and/or information that the viewer isn't privy to in this film. Maybe it was in the book, but didn't make it into the film due to time limitations? Our suggestion would be a script supervisor who isn't also the writer. Just because a film or script makes sense in the head of the creator doesn't mean it'll make sense to anyone else, and this doesn't. It's a hodgepodge of chaotic, hotep-adjacent, tweet-into-the-void platitudes that when coupled with stiff, bad acting leaves you laughing in incredulity at just how bad this film really is. Let's not forget about the score. Again, WHAT?????? Like, who compiled this random potpourri of a playlist that carried on in the background of this attempt at "edutainment." Come Outside is what happens when there's a modicum of creativity that gains enough traction to secure funding, without oversight and honest feedback.

The story centers around the sun at its normal state and alludes to its suppressed power, if you ask the question of "what if" it did what it wanted to do using its power to take away choice? The quest and journey makes the movie something to watch. The relationship with the lead and side characters make the film a delight and pose multiple questions and challenges that most people face in today's society. The story even highlights the importance of nature and the elements of nature that make life possible. People tend to neglect the things that are stable and there for the unknown adventure that could lead to good or bad possibilities. Watch it and contemplate its meaning. It teaches, preaches, and entertains.
