- 60 Years after WW2, a woman named Helga Bahlman tells the story of her induction into Lebensborn a Nazi Master race program to Uri Glau as part of a truth and reconciliation program at an Israeli Hotel. We flash back to Stuttgart 1942, at this time the Nazi's had ordered all Jewish Communities from towns and Villages to be cleared including Germans with Jewish ancestry. A young Helga arrives by train and is keen to do her part; she is brought to the main headquarters by the Sergeant who has his own secrets, Helga is introduced to another Lebensborn inductee Gisella a Spanish refugee forced into the program to save her mother.
The Sergeant is ordered into the local town to arrest German Jewish suspects, witnessed by a young Judith Benowitz from her window. Her mother Emily is concerned by the recent arrests and new camps being constructed near them, her husband William reassures her but she can't help but be worried. We move forward in their story to a few months later Gisella, Judith and her brother Benjamin are fleeing across country when they are almost discovered by a Nazi Patrol, taking Jewish prisoners into the woods and shooting them. They witness the shooting but manage to stay hidden.
We flash back to Helga's first couple of weeks at Lebensborn and meet the other girls who are being paraded at the headquarters for the Captain who flirts with Helga. During the parade we meet Margaret who we find out is the Sergeant's only daughter and was inducted into the program after their grandfather was arrested. Margaret is keen to runaway from the program before she is matched and falls pregnant to a Nazi soldier, Gissella tries to persuade her to stay, but her mind is made up. Obers lieutenant Wagner, the Captain's Uncle arrives with more lists of German Jewish suspects he wants questioned and catches the Captain and Helga together. Helga initially mortified spots a name on the list that she recognizes a Professor William Benowitz, a family that Gissella has looked after their children from time to time. Gissella is questioned by the Captain and protests that the family were not Jewish and nothing in their house indicated so, later she travels to the house to warn the family, but its too late as the Sergeant has arrived to arrest them. Emily and William beg Gissella to take their children, she does reluctantly but witness William being shot by the Sergeant, Emily desperate and screaming tries to stop them but Helga takes the Captains gun and shoots her.
We catch up with Gissella, Benjamin and Judith as they hide in an abandoned farm house, they are met by Gissella's boyfriend Isaiah, who is worried about this turn of events, especially as Gisella feels obligated to get the children to France, they come up with a plan to meet later with Isaiah stealing a truck. Back at Headquarters the Captain has discovered Gisella's disappearance and worried about what his uncle Wagner may do. Helga is also struggling with her own emotions after shooting Emily, the first time she has shot anyone. The Captain left with no choice pursues Gisella not knowing about the children she has fled with. The Sergeant tries one last time to persuade Margaret to stay but she ignores him and taking the opportunity also flees into the countryside with contact details of the French Resistance.
Gisella walking with the children through the fields is discovered by a German patrol who seeing her papers as Lebensborn take her to the nearest outpost, questioned by the Lieutenant at the outpost, she lies about who the children are which they initially believe. Margaret arrives at an abandoned farm and finds a member of the French Resistance Elsbeth primarily an assassin, she agrees to help Margaret across the border. At the outpost Gisella formulates a plan for her and the children to escape during a guard change and hopes they will not be noticed. Helga travelling with the Captain is roused from her emotional state when she finds out that the Captain is already married and has no intention of marrying her, they come across the abandoned farmhouse Gisella was hiding in, Helga now very angered and determined believes that Gisella has left with the Benowitz Jewish children.
Margaret and Elsbeth crossing fields to avoid patrols come to a river crossing, the bridge would be too risky and Elsbeth wants to swim across, Margaret is initially reluctant but confesses that she is unable to swim. Elsbeth realizes they have been discovered by a German Patrol and sacrifices herself in hopes of saving Margaret. Back at the camp Gisella is waiting for the guard change, when she realizes the Captains has arrived, she hides with the children the Lieutenant goes out to meet the Captains truck, but before they can speak, the Captain gets a call that another patrol has found a Lebensborn girl, initially thinking it is Gisella the Captain is annoyed to hear that she is drown, then the shock that it was Margaret. The Sergeant is distraught at this news and tries to hide his emotions, but can't from Helga. The outpost Lieutenant tells the Captain he has Gisella, who reveals herself in an attempt to keep them distracted from the children. The Sergeant discovers the children, but has had a change of heart about turning them over after what has happened to Margaret. Helga attacks Gisella as a traitor, hitting her and pulling a gun on her demanding whereabouts of the children, whilst everyone is distracted the Sergeant slips the children away. Helga enraged accidentally pulls the trigger and Gisella is killed.
The Sergeant brings the children to Isaiah who has the truck waiting on them, the Sergeant explains that Gisella didn't make it and if he can he will kill Helga. Isaiah agrees to take the children to the border, where they are met by a Canadian Photographer.
Back in the present the older Helga has finished the interview and awaits her taxi, she expects everyone to be angry with her but is met with silence.
