In 1938 Gerta and Munio Stern, an Austrian Jewish couple, worry about the growing antisemitism and arrive at Hamburg to retrieve their South African visas. In the embassy they're told their visas are delayed, when really all countries have suspended visas to Jews. Munio is arrested in Crystal Night and sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Gerta tries to obtain visas to an unexpected destination, Panama, and plots to liberate her husband from prison so they can escape together. Can Gerta free her husband and flee the Nazis.
