Exclusive: Real-life sisters Kate and Rooney Mara are now looking to play fictional sisters as the two are set to star in Bucking Fastard, a new movie from Werner Herzog.

Herzog will write and direct the film, with Ariel Leon Isacovitch and Agnes Chu producing, along with Andrea Bucko and Emanuele Moretti of Cobalt Sky Motion Picture Group, and Clara Wu Tsai. Production is set to start this spring in Ireland and Slovenia.

The film is based on the true story of inseparable twin sisters Joan and Jean, who live on the fringes of society.

The film marks the first time the sisters have worked together. For Rooney, the two-time Oscar nominee was most recently seen in the Orion Pictures drama Women Talking from writer-director Sarah Polley. She is repped by WME, Entertainment 360 and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.

Kate Mara has joined the drama based on Araminta Hall’s novel of the same name. Mara will star opposite Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington in the series.

Apple describes Imperfect Women as a psychological thriller examining a crime that “shatters the lives of a decades-long friendship of three women,” played by Moss, Washington and Mara. “Imperfect Women is a mystery complicated by perspective that explores guilt and retribution, love and betrayal, and the compromises we make that alter our lives irrevocably. The Oscar, Emmy and Tony nominee joins Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey and Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph in the coming-of-age musical, set in the summer of 1977 at Virginia Beach and inspired by Atlantis Apartments, Williams’ childhood neighborhood.

Story Syndicate, the film and television production company established by Oscar and Emmy-winning filmmakers Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan, have launched a scripted division focusing on television and film projects — and now they’ve inked a first-look scripted TV deal with Tomorrow Studios to go with it.

Nellie Reed of Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson’s Color Force has been appointed as head of scripted to spearhead the initiative. Tomorrow Studios, led by founder and CEO Marty Adelstein and partner and president Becky Clements, is known for their work on projects like Netflix’s “One Piece” and Apple TV+’s “Physical.”

“Marty and Becky at Tomorrow Studios are brilliant, creative and share our vision for the next steps for Story Syndicate,” Cogan and Garbus said in a statement, obtained by TheWrap. “Our scripted division is focused on elevated, commercial shows that are often grounded in true stories and speak directly to the cultural zeitgeist.

The new division will be headed up by Nellie Reed, who is joining Story Syndicate from Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson’s Color Force. Hulu and FX’s newest release in the sci-fi/thriller genre is a fresh take on a group of FBI trainees who grow up to move to separate paths in life, only to be brought back together because of a common problem. Created by Tom Rob Smith, who also authored the story Class of ’09, it centers around FBI graduates, each of whom has separate interests in life, but nobody is willing to lay down their cards, at least not this early in the series. The show stars Kate Mara, Brian Tyree Henry, Brian Smith, and Sepideh Moafi, among others, and although it’s too early to give a decisive verdict, some of the actors are doing justice to their roles. Before we even meet the class of 2009 in “Class of ’09,” we’re in the year 2034 being introduced to Tayo Michaels (Brian Tyree Henry), who — according to a news chyron — is the director of the FBI. Soon after, when we’re in what the show’s chyrons repeatedly call “The Past,” we learn Tayo is, surprise surprise, a member of the titular class, and he’s struggling to pass a physical at Quantico — a physical he must complete in order to become an FBI agent.

So… are we meant to think the future FBI Director really isn’t going to graduate? Should we be wondering if he only made it into the Bureau because of special treatment? Or, assuming the flash-forward is meant to steer attention away from if he graduates and toward how he graduates, should we be focused on the casual discrimination he faces from one of his fellow students?...

In the spring of 2020, a handful of shows developed to air on the basic cable channel FX instead debuted exclusively on Hulu. It was an attempt to better integrate different parts of the Disney corporate family in the aftermath of Disney acquiring most of Fox’s film and television assets, as well as an acknowledgment that more and more viewers were waiting to watch shows on streaming. Cutting out the legacy media middleman just seemed like a logical next step toward the medium’s future.

It was also, however, extremely confusing.

The premise of the limited series “Class of ‘09” is a familiar form of dystopia: in the near future, law enforcement has come to rely on technology that skirts the line between police work and a police state. “Class of ‘09” shares a blueprint with classics like “Minority Report,” then adds a timely twist. The FX show’s Orwellian innovation is an algorithm powered by artificial intelligence, the kind of tool now at the center of all kinds of public anxiety, including the ongoing writers strike.

“Class of ‘09” is created and written by Tom Rob Smith, the British scribe best known to Americans as the force behind “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the second installment of Ryan Murphy anthology “American Crime Story.” That season, an underrated masterpiece, scrambled the typical chronology of true crime, beginning with the titular murder and winding backwards through Andrew Cunanan’s serial killing spree.

The world has undergone some huge changes in the last 15 years. Artificial intelligence has changed much about modern society, including what we can trust with our eyes and ears. That’s especially true in the FBI, as the new series “Class of ‘09” coming to Hulu on Wednesday, May 10 will explore. Since FX moved under the Disney umbrella in 2019, it has sometimes been difficult to find its programming; I’m a professional and I’m often stymied when it comes to which FX shows actually air on FX and which are Hulu exclusives. But FX shows have still felt like FX shows.

The new FX-produced drama Class of ’09 is a puzzlement. One of those Hulu-only offerings, Class of ’09 surely has the air and aura of an FX show, from its sturdy, cinematic production values to a cast topped by FX veterans Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) and Kate Mara (A Teacher) to its creation by writer Tom Rob Smith (The Assassination of Gianni Versace). But what it feels like? Well, it feels like a broadcast TV show from a decade ago — specifically like ABC’s Quantico, a drama remembered largely by Priyanka Chopra Jonas devotees.

Exclusive: Sofia Vassilieva and Dan Tracy are set for recurring roles in J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan’s Max period drama Duster, starring Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson.

Co-written by Abrams and Latoya Morgan, in Duster, set in 1972, the first Black female FBI agent (Hilson) heads to the Southwest and recruits a gutsy getaway driver (Holloway) in a bold effort to take down a growing crime syndicate.

Vassilieva will play Jessica. Tracy will portray Agent Chad Grant. Character descriptions are being kept under wraps.

A proper law enforcement show features high-octane scenes, a fast pace, and a few twists and turns here and there.

It becomes much more special if the characters stand out uniquely or develop a bond akin to a chosen family.

Class of '09 is a show set inside the FBI that follows a group of unique characters whose journey to the FBI is not typical. These characters had lived another life before joining the Bureau, which is supposed to make them different from others.

Sometimes, we talk about something taking off before it crashes and burns. But rarely do we talk about something igniting, failing to take off, and disintegrating at an excruciatingly slow pace.

Class of '09 is not breaking new ground, with some excellent FBI shows having been broadcast in the last ten years.

Based on the setting, it might be compared to Quantico, starring Priyanka Chopra. But...

While AI may be a relatively new concern for many in Hollywood, it’s old hat to Tom Rob Smith and Joe Robert Cole, two of the executive producers behind FX’s upcoming drama “Class of ’09.” Though their new series examines the dangers of law enforcement relying too heavily on AI, Smith isn’t concerned that AI in its modern form will fully replace writers.

“I’m less worried than other people are right now on the story creation, but I could be just naive about that right now,” Smith, who previously served as an executive producer and writer for “The Assassination of Gianna Versace: American Crime Story,” told TheWrap.
