    Great movie!

I don't usually watch erotic film, but this was recommended to me as a balanced interesting movie that was also erotic, and it was terrific. There is a real plot, realistic couple and that made the erotic parts all the more meaningful. I also liked the fact that these actors were interested in the film and the nudity/sexuality part came as a natural outcome, not the other way around.

I can imagine that dudes who watch regular "porn" might not like it as much because there is an actual story leading up to the "porn" part, and the erotic scenes are meant to add depth to the story and also extra pleasure, rather than the usual goal of pornographic movies. For those of us who want something more sensitive to relationship and to the woman's perspective, this film was great.

No wonder Feministic Porn Is so Boring!

This the second JLB movie that i have watched now and i am pretty sure am definitely not going to watch anymore of her movies, what i so fail to understand is why is Feministic Porn so damn boring and why does it look so tediously unreal, you don't expect a story in a porn movie but it is commendable that they try to pass it of as having one, except when the story seems so unreal as well and at the same time boring, i completely understand that different people have different tastes and not everyone likes it dirty and nasty but for some reason all the men in JLB's movies either look gay and look like they are being forced to have sex with a female or they look like they are missing a few gears and are perpetually stuck in the second gear, the men in her movies look like little bit...s who have absolutely no idea what they are doing and its the women running the show which is good to a certain extent but after a while it looks fake and unreal, why would a woman want to have sex with a man whos acting like a little girl, she would be better of having sex with a woman instead, if this is how men have sex with women in everyday life then it would be better of that women turn to there own sex for satisfaction and fulfillment, the movie looks so old and grainy that it might well have been shot with a cheap handy cam, frankly people should stop calling it artistic porn and call it substandard porn that you instantly regret you ever watched, seriously badly acted regular porn will manage to give you a hard on any given day than this play acting porn rubbish, frankly it will you turn you off sex if you take this seriously.. I think i understand now why its called feministic porn because it is strictly meant for the consumption of man hating feminists, if you are a sensible enough that should be enough to not make you watch this mediocrity masquerading as artsy porn! But Good Luck if you think Different.

A whole different, feminist approach to erotic movies

In Matinée, Jennifer Lyon Bell, one of the leading feminist erotic movie directors, presents a whole different approach to erotic movies. To her, sex is something to be savored not exploited. Her respect and feeling for her very-appealing characters permeates the movie and stands in stark contrast to the exploitive, misogynistic approach so often found in traditional supposedly-erotic movies.

Jennifer Lyon Bell is also very well trained and it shows in Matinée. The quality of the production is first rate. She clearly took great pains in making a high-quality movie.

The IMDb "director cameo" about the movie correctly notes that she appears briefly at the end of the movie, but fails to note that she is one of the members of the audience watching the play which is the subject of the film.

    • Trivia
Because of its combination of scripted acting and explicitly sexual performance, the audition process for "Matinée" was carefully crafted. In order to make sure that all the actors and actresses would be comfortable and fully understand the challenges of the role, director Jennifer Lyon Bell needed to create a multistage audition process. After reading the script, every actor and actress had an initial private conversation with director, and the chance to ask detailed questions. Subsequent auditions involved increasing involvement with the role: plain readings followed by improvisations followed by an improvisation involving nudity. Then finalists were paired and auditioned together. Finally, each finalist was asked which other partners he/she most preferred to work with. Steven McAlistair and Alicia Whitsover - who had never met each other before the auditions - turned out to be the couple with the right combination of acting talent, bravery, spontaneity, and sexual authenticity.
