If we’re holding up the all-time best bank robbery movies, a special place is reserved for classics like Bonnie and Clyde, Dog Day Afternoon, Heat, and a handful more. But when it comes to the most underrated recent cinematic bank heists, Christian Gudegast’s 2018 movie Den of Thieves ranks right up there with the most entertaining and hyper-violent examples like The Town, Point Break, Hell or High Water, and the like. Now that Gudegast recently unloaded Den of Thieves 2: Pantera on the masses this January, it’s high time to reflect on the making of the original.
While a tad long and baldly inspired by Michael Mann’s Heat, Den of Thieves was released in January 2018 to commercial success and middling critical acclaim. For those in the dark, the story concerns a unit of former Marines turned bank robbers called The Outlaws led by Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber...

We saw Taylor Sheridan’s peak writing in his movies and his most popular Western drama, Yellowstone. However, we unfortunately saw a slow descent in quality in Sheridan’s works. The Yellowstone finale was nowhere near as enjoyable as the first few seasons. Some fans have started to point out that even the initial seasons had some glaring problems that we conveniently ignored in his writing.

One of the major issues with Sheridan’s writing in Yellowstone in its earlier seasons was his addition of irrelevant plot points that took the story nowhere. These were either storylines with irrelevant character details in them or just plot points he had to abandon completely for the sake of budget.

Taylor Sheridan is one of the most popular filmmakers and screenwriters working in the industry now. He hit it big with the neo-Western Yellowstone, which he created and wrote most episodes of, leading him to create several successful shows such as Tulsa King, Landman, and more. He was also Oscar-nominated for Hell or High Water.
Before Sheridan hit it big in Hollywood and the TV industry, he was an actor and had a regular role in the show Sons of Anarchy. However, he quickly grew disillusioned and decided to quit the business before pivoting to become a screenwriter. While he never planned on it, he revealed that he tried to make it in Hollywood in a different way.

Welcome to your weekly rundown of the biggest stories from Netflix’s top 10 hourly figures drop for the week ending February 2nd, 2025. An interesting week in the top 10s with a few returns, a new entry in Netflix’s overall top 10 most watched list, a major documentary flop, and much more!
Note: In this report of Netflix’s hours viewed from January 27th, 2025 to February 2nd, 2025, we’ll use “Complete Viewings Equivalent,” or Cve, expressed in millions. That means we divide the hours viewed announced by Netflix by the runtime of films or series. It allows for better comparisons between films and series, but it’s not an audience metric. It is the minimum number of viewings if they were all complete from the first second to the last of the film or season.

Taylor Sheridan is the kind of filmmaker who can turn even the simplest scene into a literal masterpiece. One of his best movies is packed with moments so intense they could give a horror flick a run for its money. The attention to detail, folks, is next-level.

Taylor Sheridan is widely recognized today as the creator of Yellowstone and a leading figure in the Western crime thriller genre, but before he built his own empire through screenwriting and directing, he began his journey in Hollywood as an actor.

The filmmaker got his start in show business after starring in 1995’s Walker, Texas Ranger, and appearing in small films and in recurring roles on television. Some of his most notable works included Veronica Mars and FX’s Sons of Anarchy.
Taylor Sheridan reveals why he moved from acting to writing his own projects
Many fans praise Taylor Sheridan for his exceptional storytelling which usually relies on simple and raw narratives with minimal cinematic embellishment. His passion for the craft exudes in the projects he creates, and moving from acting to writing is perhaps the best decision he has ever made for his career.

Once upon a time, Taylor Sheridan was the cowboy who rode in with all the fanfare, spurs clicking and hat tipped just right. He made us fall in love with the grit of Yellowstone and the chaos of Mayor of Kingstown—his shows weren’t just TV drama; they were like a shot of whiskey to the soul, full of fire and flavor.

Taylor Sheridan may be best known for Yellowstone but he cracked screenwriting on the big screen with films like Sicario and Hell or High Water. Featuring themes and genres that would later on define his style, the latter was a neo-Western starring Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine, which gave Sheridan his first Oscar nomination.
While the film was also nominated in several other categories including Best Picture, the year had tough competition with the likes of Damien Chazelle, Mike Mills, and more being strong contenders. Sheridan lost the Best Original Screenplay Award to Manchester by the Sea, and to be honest, that was deserved.

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone is a phenomenon—a rugged, fiercely compelling look at the modern-day American West. It’s blend of grit, power, and family drama has attracted millions of viewers since it first premiered in 2018. The series pulses with tension, power struggles, and, yes, violence.
However, if Sheridan had remembered one particular lesson from his earlier film work—specifically his work on a gunfight scene—it could have changed the game entirely for Yellowstone.

Sheridan’s approach to violence is far removed from the glorified, action-packed shootouts Hollywood loves to serve up. In his films, his style is about capturing violence in its raw, jarring form—realistic, messy, and often over before anyone even realizes it’s started. Had Sheridan reflected on this experience, he could have infused even more raw, immediate energy into the shootouts of Yellowstone.

Though he's better known for creating prestige TV shows and movies, Taylor Sheridan has also played four characters in the projects he wrote. Before Taylor Sheridan wrote his shows and movies, Taylor Sheridan was an actor in his own right. He starred in a few notable projects, like Sons of Anarchy, where he played David Hale, and got quite a bit of experience in front of the camera. He's also used that experience in his own shows, as he's become one of many recurring actors in Sheridan's shows. Over the years, Sheridan has had small roles in four of his own movies and shows.
Most of Sheridan's shows include big casts filled with prominent actors, so his cameos can often fly under the radar. For example, the cast of Landman includes Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, and Demi Moore, and Sheridan is exceptionally skilled at securing big names to star in his projects.

When a series sets out to shake things up, it often starts by breaking free from the mold, offering us something we didn’t know we needed. But, somewhere along the way, that spark can fade, and what once felt like an adventure worth following starts to feel more like déjà vu. Take Yellowstone, for example.
When it first aired in 2018, it was an adrenaline shot for TV fans. You could almost hear the winds of change blowing through the prairies as this show promised to be something raw, something bold. The characters were tough as nails, the scenery was jaw-dropping, and Kevin Costner as John Dutton? Well, it was… Pure gold.

As the seasons went by, the show’s initial fire started to flicker and fade. Season 3 had the promise of ramping things up, offering that high-octane drama that would have viewers hooked.

Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western film Hell or High Water is proof that he needs to make another movie alongside his ongoing television shows. In recent years, Taylor Sheridan has mostly been known for Yellowstone and other TV shows like Landman and Tulsa King. While Sheridan's TV shows are wildly popular and extremely compelling, the writer got his start behind the camera by making feature films. His first movie was 2015's Sicario, and he went on to write five more films while he was also starting Yellowstone and its spinoff shows.
Since Sheridan has become king of prestige TV, it's easy to forget how good he was at writing films. Of the six films he's made, only one is under 50% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and three are certified fresh. Taylor Sheridan explored the devastating impact of casual racism in America in his 2016 film. Through subtle yet powerful dialogue, the movie unpacks how seemingly innocent remarks can perpetuate division and harm. Sheridan crafted a story that’s not just about the characters on screen, but about society itself, challenging viewers to confront the uncomfortable truths lurking beneath everyday interactions.

Taylor Sheridan has become one of Hollywood's most well-known film and television writers, with many of his projects featured on Paramount+. Taylor Sheridan's TV shows have skyrocketed in popularity since the release of his renowned hit, Yellowstone, a neo-Western cowboy drama starring Kevin Costner. Funnily enough, Yellowstone is Sheridan's only TV series not to be featured on Paramount's streaming service, despite its prequel shows and his various other projects prominently advertised among their marquee titles.
Before Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan tried his hand as an actor, appearing on the popular show Sons of Anarchy for 21 episodes. He then began his career writing for films, finding a successful streak from Sicario to Hell or High Water to Wind River, all of which came out in consecutive years between 2015 and 2017. A healthy ecosystem and healthy competition is the biggest challenge for Netflix Emea, according to chief Larry Tanz.
Tanz threw the gauntlet down to competitors by urging: “We need all of us to develop the next generation of storytellers and want to get ahead on how we develop and upskill storytellers, writers, directors, producers and below the line talent.” He implied that Netflix is ahead of the game in this area, pointing to training programs the streamer has run across the world and an upcoming one at the Red Sea International Film Festival.
“We have been pretty consistent in terms of our investment and growth,” he went on to say at Content London. “We are seeing that our locally-oriented commissioning approach is working for our members and business. We want a healthy ecosystem and healthy competition – that is our biggest challenge.”

Before Taylor Sheridan became the genius behind Yellowstone and Wind River, he had a skeleton in his creative closet—literally. Long before crafting epic Westerns, Sheridan dabbled in the world of low-budget horror, helming a movie so questionable he couldn’t help but roast it himself later. Think cheesy scares, questionable writing, and enough cringe to make even hardcore horror fans wince.

Why Yellowstone Reigns as America’s Most-Watched Show (Photo Credit – Instagram)
When Yellowstone burst onto the Paramount Network scene in the summer of 2018, it was like a wild Mustang taking off. Critics weren’t exactly throwing confetti at first, but by Season 3, this Taylor Sheridan creation stampeded to the top, becoming America’s most-watched show. Its mix of grit, breathtaking Montana landscapes, and juicy family drama had everyone talking.
Taylor Sheridan, the mind behind hits like Sicario and Hell or High Water, knew how to capture raw human emotion. With Yellowstone and its prequels, 1883 and 1923, he hit that nostalgia sweet spot while keeping it fresh. Audiences couldn’t get enough of the Duttons battling family loyalty and land disputes—it was like a Shakespearean tragedy with cowboys and way more horses.

When it comes to storytelling, the magic often lies in the nuances, the details that linger in the mind long after the last scene fades to black. And, if there’s any hope left for Yellowstone, perhaps it resides in Taylor Sheridan’s gift for storytelling, evident in his masterstroke, Hell or High Water. This low-budget gem, featuring Chris Pine and Ben Foster as bank-robbing siblings and Jeff Bridges as their relentless pursuer, wowed critics at Cannes and captured audiences’ hearts worldwide.

Set against the backdrop of Texas, Sheridan weaves a vibrant tapestry. He artfully explores the enduring legacy of the American frontier, creating a narrative that’s as thought-provoking as it is thrilling. Reflecting on Sheridan’s success, one might wonder: Could Yellowstone find its saving grace if its creator taps into the same reservoir of creativity that gave us something to chew on for days and weeks?...

As the godfather of modern Westerns, Taylor Sheridan is very astute about the corporate world’s needs and the commercial fanfare’s demands. Balancing the two gives the studios and the viewers a perfect amalgamation of sustainable, profitable, and binge-worthy dramas like Yellowstone and Hell or High Water.

But it is not always the world of mainstream media that lets out the genius in Sheridan. As a cowboy himself, the desire to own the largest and most famous ranch in the whole world (the Four Sixes) juxtaposes his need to protect the cattle and ranch lifestyle that is currently racing toward extinction. It is this extinction that has become the filmmaker’s latest obsession when it comes to scripting a story for film or television.

If there was an award for outworking a Clydesdale, Taylor Sheridan would gallop to the finish line first, leaving all in his dust. Few in the TV industry wear as many hats or lassos as many fans as this Texas cowboy, who has single-handedly reignited the TV western—no small potatoes!

A striking legacy of 9/11 is how the United States government exploited national grief and panic to pass aggressive legislation stripping Americans of privacy rights. The Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act, also known as the Patriot Act, was passed in October 2001, 45 days after the Twin Towers fell, and gave the government “roving surveillance authority.” Agents wouldn’t need a warrant to tap email communications or phone calls, or to monitor credit reports and banking history. Cloaked in the language of safety, the Patriot Act turned every person into a suspect. In the decades since, Americans have become so used to forfeiting privacy that we willingly opt-in to technologies and resources asking for data.

Yellowstone is one of the biggest shows in the history of television. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the show has brought fame, acclaim, and recognition to a lot of underrated actors, who otherwise would have been on a very different career track. One of these many actors is Luke Grimes, who stars as Kayce Dutton, son of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton.

Isn’t it true that every cloud has a silver lining? Taylor Sheridan, the maestro behind the cinematic tapestry we know as Yellowstone, earlier shot to fame through the keen edge of his pen with talented screenplays like Sicario & Hell or High Water. However, it was his Wind River that weaved a web of neo-Western crime mystery so enthralling that it ensnares us with its relevance and thought-provoking narrative.

Has the touch of Taylor Sheridan, the trailblazer behind the Western TV renaissance and creator of the chart-topping Yellowstone series, lost its golden gleam? Hailed as the King of Westerns, he has proven his royalty status time and again with a knack for penning riveting narratives that resonate with a multitude of viewers.
While some argue that Sheridan’s recent offerings, like Mayor of Kingstown and Special Ops: Lioness, didn’t set the screen ablaze, others tip their cowboy hats to the success of Tulsa King, bolstered by Sylvester Stallone’s undeniable swagger.

“Let’s make an R-rated cartoon about an R-rated cartoon coming out” was the original concept pitched when Matt Stone and Trey Parker were developing their classic animated musical opus, South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut. Twenty-five years later, it remains a brilliantly meta idea. But before Canada-blaming glory, South Park’s road to the silver screen was paved with many blockades, mainly from within their parent company of Viacom, which owned both Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures, and their biggest formidable foe, the then-named Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
And as if it wasn’t ironic enough, the biggest bone of contention was for the creators’ use of vulgarities within an anti-censorship-centric movie. In typical Matt and Trey fashion, whatever adversary they faced, they rebelled with nastier pushback against. And in the long run, this made for a more memorable film. Here’s a look back at the...

Taylor Sheridan’s decision to transform from an actor to a screenwriter has brought him considerable success. The screenwriter saw huge success with his first effort Sicario, which was nominated for the WGA Award for Best Original Screenplay. The Yellowstone creator received more acclaim for his follow-up effort Hell or High Water, which was nominated for multiple Oscars.
Sheridan reportedly spent some time trying to get the right team of creatives to work on Hell or High Water. The neo-Western starring Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine follows the story of two robbers, who are being pursued by the Texas Rangers. Regardless, Sheridan mentioned that he found Scottish director David Mackenzie by a stroke of luck.
