Synopsis

  • EMMA, 28-year-old Black female is a victim of domestic violence and is experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety as a result of the ongoing abuse. After a recent domestic violence episode, Emma slacks on her personal hygiene for a couple days and does not answer her phone when her family and friends are calling. Emma is ignoring lots of text messages from her close friend, JACKIE, 32-year-old Black female. Jackie sends Emma a voice message letting her know that she is aware of what Emma is going through and she then encourages Emma to choose to love herself. Emma eventually gets up, takes a shower, and gets dressed. She plans on taking pictures and posting them on social media in efforts to stop the phone calls and texts and to remove any ideas from Jackie's head. After getting dressed, Emma starts to take a ridiculous amount of selfies for social media. Still not feeling satisfied that Jackie will believe her that nothing is wrong, Emma decides to get out of the house to take more pictures at the park. Emma looks in her closet for the perfect sweater to match her outfit but has difficulty finding it. Emma eventually gives up and plops down on the closet floor. A large bag falls down onto Emma. Emma opens the bag and pulls out her keyboard. This is the point when Emma is flooded with lots of memories. She screams right as she decides to choose herself. She begins to play the keyboard and sing. Emma packs her bags and decides to leave David. She gets into her car and then calls Jackie to let her know she has decided to choose herself. Emma shares that she is ready to live her life free from abuse. Emma leaves the home she shares with David and does not look back.
