Winter Island

While the main actor - the son - did a great job, the movie somehow lacked something. It was a good idea and adequately executed, but it was slow. There was some bad acting by some of the characters (mother and detective), and some of the dialogue was a bit cringe-worthy. Some parts didn't make sense and there were a couple of plot points that were a bit too convenient. Also, while I understand why some of the spookier aspects of the film were included, sometimes they didn't really work and bordered on being cheesy.

It's not a bad movie, especially for an obviously low budget, but if you have any other options, choose them first.

Although labeled as a horror, this movie comes across more as a slow burn psychological drama. If you're expecting a jump scare, ghostly horror, this isn't it (thankfully!). Instead what you get is a movie with an overall desolate atmosphere with one or two interesting twists that you may not see coming.

This is not a "sit down with your friends" type of movie on a Friday night, it's more of a movie you put on when you're by yourself and just want something that's more character based and gives you an uneasy feeling. Some people may find it a bit too slow and I admit, there are a few plot points that simply don't make sense overall. However there are some great performances to be found here, the cinematography looks amazing for the budget and overall, with a tighter script, this would be a classic.

With Winter fast approaching and the evenings getting darker and longer, this may be a movie you'll want to have queued up on your watch list for when you're looking for something just a little bit different.
