Director Jordi Ortega had the idea of making this film when documentary filmmaker Robert Greenwald (Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism (2004)) handed him a flyer about the political organization "Driving Votes".
The day before the 2004 elections, while shooting a scene in the outskirts of Las Vegas, Ortega and Smilowski stumbled upon actor Sean Penn who was canvassing for John Kerry. That random encounter made possible one of the key interviews in the film.
