Esther Carena is a brilliant medical student. Her mother manages to snag her a wealthy husband in Herr Berger. But While fraulein Carena is busy doing her work, Berger is bored at home. So he goes out and has an affair with Blandine Ebinger, who falls pregnant. When the delivery turns out to be difficult, guess whom they call in to consult?

If you think that German cinema in the post-World-War-One period is all expressionist angles and weird plots, here's an example an old-fashioned exploitation film, urging women to avoid get an education. Instead they're supposed to manage the home and be ready satisfy the lusts of their randy husbands, particularly those who don't seem to hold jobs.

While the issues of dealing with a society in which women might aspire to be more than hausfraus is often a knotty one, this short feature condemning education in women is a bit much for my taste. This one looks like one that Kracauer must have remembered when he was writing.
