Man, this movie is a rare kind of mess-you can't even tell what it's supposed to be

No real horror, no fantasy, no chilling supernatural dread. It's about nothing-zero genre identity. It wobbles between drama, half-baked mysticism, and psychological whatever, but never commits to anything. The whole 'magic' vibe is just some scribbles in a book and the main girl mumbling nonsense. There's no actual evil force-just the screenwriter jerking off over frog doodles and arrows in some crusty old notebook.

This isn't horror-it's just some angsty teen girl going through puberty, ready to dive into rebellion for no reason. A coming-of-age metaphor with zero setup. The conflicts make no sense-totally random, unexplained. The writers didn't even try to make things logical. They just slapped together this 'mysterious beauty' archetype who wanders around pissed off, blaming her dead mom for... what, exactly? Her whole motivation is 'vibes'! No backstory, no tragedy-just 'ancestral calling' or whatever. They didn't even bother explaining how the mom died or who's to blame. Nothing makes sense-not the genre, not the themes, not the script!

Fake folklore, fake mythology-just a boring, meaningless backdrop. The creators clearly know jack about actual myths, fairy tales, or family drama. Nothing connects to any 'queen' or 'bones.' This isn't horror-it's a half-baked drama. Where's the folklore? In some random symbols the girl finds? This is lazy, surface-level nonsense-just slapping spooky imagery onscreen for cheap tension. Nothing gets explained, nothing matters.

And don't get me started on the dad. They villainize him for no reason-he's just a strict religious guy trying to protect his kids. Not abusive, not a fanatic, just... a parent. But the movie acts like he's some monster. They didn't even bother giving him real flaws-just 'oh no, he's too religious!' Weak. The whole conflict is forced, pointless, and stupid.

Yeah, the atmosphere's there, but the movie's empty. All style, no substance. Just another trendy 'folk horror' flick with symbols that lead nowhere.

Feels like the filmmakers had one axe to grind-their own grudge against religion and tradition. Like they're victims of 'oppressive morals' or whatever.

Howard Lovecraft? Now that's ancient horror-dark, poetic, actually beautiful. This movie? Just a bunch of scribbled arrows and frogs.

    Love such classic thrilling legends

Good classic - like thrilling story.

    Good filming, good acting.

The mistery spouses to be a bit known at the beginning as all of such classic stories but definitely it reveals its plot line gradually and it is immersive more and more with every minute of movie.

It means that feel of to be bee thrilled is growing and growing.

    Martin Freeman fantastic as usually.

Very talented actor whose acting in this picture makes whole film more immersive.

    Fantastic scenery and dialogues.

I love such movies- is like reading Andersen stories again or even Grimm brothers.

I cannot forget about young actors playing main characters. They are doing great work.

Julia Butters beautiful and very talented young actress is fantastic partner for more experienced actors.

LORD I HATE FILMS LIKE THIS

First the good. Acting is... OK... not much to write home about as there's not much for the actors to get their teeth into. Within the first 10mins you get the impression that this could be quite spooky if it wanted to be. But ultimately it never really goes anywhere. It's one of those films where they slowly build towards something but the ending is not worth the journey. And everything happens in the last 5 mins. To sum this waste of your time up would be a single word... 'underwhelming'. I feel that these actors should have put their considereable efforts into a better sotry with a better script and abeter director. It reminds me of The Witch, but isnt a patch on that. Best to leave this one alone. You won;t get the time or your money back.

Another Bad Luck For Jacob Tremblay

This movie is another example of Jacob Tremblay being plagued with bad directors because once again, Jacob was underutilized in his own co-lead movie. I'm even betting that the horror movie that Jacob directed in Prodigy Camp in August 2024 was better than this one.

There was so much potential for his character Samuel Brass, but they intentionally withdrew from doing anything good with him. His character portrayal is lacking so much consistency along with confusing temperaments, and add on top of that, a terrible character arc.

One time he's trying to be a bully, another time he's being pouty, and another time he's suddenly a compassionate person. His character simply can't make up his mind. He's just there to cover up what's missing in the plot having no self-originality and going nowhere. What were the writer and director doing? Sam's arc was a mix of being so forced and all over the place.

Jacob Tremblay is one of the best young actors of the industry, but the bad writing and directing was as if made to ruin his image. Make no mistake, I love watching Jacob in every moment of the movie, but his scenes could've been done way better than this.

The takes were terrible as if they're trying to fit a quarter of the movie in a single day - as if this movie made in four days. Jacob's takes should've had been repeated. His scenes looked as if they were only rehearsing and not actually filming the movie at all. It was 100% not Jacob's fault why it was terrible; it was all the incompetent writer and director's fault.

Lost in the Dark: A Film Without Purpose

A deeply disappointing film. The acting was extremely weak, with the cast showing little to no emotion, making the scenes feel cold and lifeless. There was no tension or suspense, and the horror elements were practically nonexistent. The plot lacked any clear direction, and the story unfolded without logic or purpose. The directing felt random, and the scenes did not connect in a meaningful way. There was nothing engaging to hold the viewer's attention. Watching it felt like sitting through a long, boring lecture. I truly regret wasting both my time and money on this movie, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
