When the Highwaymen recorded “Desperados Waiting for a Train,” written by visionary songwriter Guy Clark, who died in 2016, the supergroup of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson landed on their most poignant song. The first trailer for Sony’s sex comedy No Hard Feelings, hitting theaters June 23, includes star Jennifer Lawrence consoling an ex by declaring she hasn’t forgotten him: “Last night, I thought, ‘I miss that fucker.’ ” Moviegoers might share similar nostalgia, recalling a not-long-ago era when studio offerings centering on ribald jokes would regularly play theatrically — before going missing.
This summer suggests a possible changing of the tide. As audiences return to cinemas post-pandemic, studios appear to be using the next few months as a testing ground for the theatrical return of the R-rated comedy. No Hard Feelings, about an awkward teen whose parents hire Lawrence’s character to date him, will later have company from Lionsgate’s Joy Ride (July 7), Universal’s Strays (Aug. 18) and MGM’s Bottoms (Aug. 25). Such projects are akin to horror films in offering viewers the experience of watching shocking moments with a group of like-minded strangers.

July was a big month for Netflix. Between new originals like The Old Guard, Fatal Affair, Desperados and more, not to mention classic films like Cloud Atlas, Total Recall and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, to name just a few, there was lots for subscribers to get stuck into when it came to movies.
But what were the most-watched films on Netflix for the month? That’s a good question, and as it turns out, the most-watched title – when it comes to movies in the United States, at least – wasn’t even one of the ones mentioned above. No, it was actually an animated children’s flick from 2012 called The Lorax. And it wasn’t the only animated effort to make a strong showing, as Despicable Me placed in number 7.

The pandemic has made desperadoes of all of us. There’s a strange kind of helplessness that sets in as home-bound film fans search for a decent movie to watch. Mind you, the medium has existed for more than a century, and its classics have never been more available than they are now. But unless you subscribe to a cinephile service like the Criterion Channel or Mubi, the good stuff isn’t curated in a way to help audiences stuck at home. And so, unsure what to watch, we settle for movies like “Desperados,” another lazy example of comedy-as-content from the Netflix machine, and among the service’s most popular performers for July.
If you liked such Netflix originals as “Ibiza” and “Wine Country,” try “Desperados,” or so the algorithm goes. Even the movie seems to have been made by computer, resulting in — to prove that leading lady Nasim Pedrad deserves a better movie.

It’s been a good month for Netflix with content like The Old Guard and The Baby-Sitters Club‘s first season getting rave reviews and winning plenty of media attention. It helps to also have already seen a great collection of classic films land on the service throughout July, too, such as Million Dollar Baby and Schindler’s List. We even have the second season of the hit show The Umbrella Academy releasing at the end of the month, so there’s clearly no shortage of awesome stuff to keep us all busy.

The film follows three pals who embark on an impromptu trip to Mexico in an effort to delete an email one of them sent to her boyfriend. A scrappy final act stops this Groundhog Day-esque Sundance record-breaker from being a showstopper, but there’s plenty of fun to be had on the way
Throughout this confounding and unsettling time, trapped indoors as a deadly pandemic rages, many of us have found ourselves compulsively and eerily gorging on films that confront the practicalities and horrors involved with some sort of now all-too-familiar apocalypse. Not just those that suddenly seem timely, like viral thriller turned convincing docudrama Contagion, but also those that cover similar global panic and ultimately togetherness in the face of natural disasters, alien invasion and other earth-shaking events. What’s happening outside has made the fantastical stories playing out inside seem that much closer, that much easier to identify with, a world of Hollywood make-believe blurring into real life.

If you have a Netflix subscription then you’re probably not hurting for top-tier television and movies to keep you busy. The service is home to an utterly gigantic offering of content, and luckily for us all, a large portion of it is good or great. For instance, this month alone has seen the platform grow with huge hits like Million Dollar Baby, The Karate Kid trilogy and Schindler’s List. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of stinkers that make their way into the mix, and sometimes those stinkers are the ones that somehow manage to end up at the top of Netflix’s charts.

A trio of original films, all initially expected to have theatrical releases, found considerable interest at home over the holiday weekend. Broadway juggernaut “Hamilton,” Rod Lurie War movie “The Outpost,” and Jon Stewart’s political comedy “Irresistible” have little in common on the surface, but each served as a July 4th tie-in its way. Their shared success reflects a public that remains interested in original movies — wherever they may watch them.
“Hamilton,” set in the formative days of the republic, may have been the home viewing event of the weekend. Unlike rival Netflix, Disney+ doesn’t provide a list of its most popular offerings. Gauging response to the studio’s $75 million acquisition of the original show’s recording is mostly anecdotal, but app analytics provider Apptopia says Disney+ downloads over the weekend were 266,084 — a 72 percent increase when compared to the average number of Disney+ downloads over the four previous weekends.

With a long weekend now upon us, folks are no doubt going to be seeking out fresh content to dig into and though today – and the next few days – are actually a bit light on new movies and TV shows when it comes to the major streaming services, there’s still some stuff worth checking out.
Of course, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and HBO Max, in particular, just delivered massive drops to their subscribers on the first of the month, with each platform bringing a ton – and we do mean a ton – of new arrivals. So, it’s understandable that July 3rd, 4th and 5th may be a bit on the light side.
But again, there’s enough here that you should find something to satisfy you. And if you don’t, well, like we just said, July 1st brought with it more than enough to keep you busy.

Ever since the pandemic started, it feels like many of our favorite streaming services have been pumping out exactly the kinds of binge-worthy shows and classic films we all want to watch during a quarantine. Netflix, in particular, has been doing a fantastic job of keeping our eyes glued to the screen over the past few months, especially with some of June’s excellent additions like Steven Spielberg’s beloved E.T. the Extraterrestrial, famous horror flick The Silence of the Lambs, and the politically-charged V for Vendetta.
Yet, even with so much to sink hours of viewing time into, it’s nice to know there’s more on the horizon and July is already shaping up to be another incredible month for Netflix subscribers. While Hollywood has struggled to marry its affection for bombastic big-budget franchises and its audience’s hunger for the mid-budget romantic comedies that fell out of box-office fashion long ago, Netflix picked up the slack and ran with it. But bulking up its robust library of originals with a litany of rom-com offerings — a good thing! — doesn’t always equal with quality, even for a filmmaker-friendly streamer like Netflix. For every tender, funny hit like “To All the Boys,” there’s a retrograde entry like “The Kissing Booth.” For every clever “Always Be My Maybe,” there’s a forgettable waste of a good idea like “Love Wedding Repeat.” For every crowdpleaser like “Set It Up,” there’s a “Hey, what movie was that?” like “The Last Summer.”
Now there’s “Desperados,” which plays out like a needlessly gross-out version of the incredibly similarly themed “Ibiza,” an overlooked Netflix rom-com that...

Netflix has confirmed most of its upcoming content for July, so it’s time to take a look at what’s on the horizon. It’s a quiet-ish month for the streaming giant, but we assume it’ll only get quieter in the next part of the year as the industry shutdown continues to impact release schedules everywhere. Nonetheless, Netflix still has some intriguing projects to offer, for the time being.
July will see the return of The Umbrella Academy for its highly anticipated second season, but Netflix also has a few new gambles in the form of its Unsolved Mysteries and The Baby-Sitters Club reboots, along with a brand new spin on the Arthurian legend with its Lady of the Lake series, Cursed. Elsewhere, Charlize Theron stars as an immortal badass in comic book adaptation The Old Guard and we’ll take another trip into teen rom-com territory with...

Every year, movies are being produced at faster rates and in greater quantity, and that’s thanks – in part – to streamers like Netflix. Because of their business strategy, customers can now watch thousands of films for the same price as a single cinema ticket. As such, the entertainment appetite of the American public has been growing stronger with each passing season. To that end, here’s an overview of the best new movies coming to Netflix next month.
First off, we got science fiction and fantasy. Fans of visiting other worlds will be in for a treat in July, as Netflix will be adding Cloud Atlas to its library. Directed by the Wachowski siblings – the same ones who created the now-infamous Matrix franchise – this time-traveling epic follows the stories of a handful of reincarnating souls who live their different yet similar lives across several centuries.

How does Netflix determine which titles leave and which enter its dauntingly large library? Do they carefully analyze viewing statistics and find content that caters to our interests? Or do they simply throw an immense amount of content at the wall and watch what sticks?
The answer is probably a mix of both. Like most entertainment companies, Netflix knows full well the potential of mathematics, but it also respects the creative spirit. As such, some new additions may have been carefully chosen, and others not. In any case, here’s an overview of the 81 new movies and TV shows headed to the platform this coming week.
Let’s begin with the basics. One of the most inoffensive yet well-crafted Hollywood films arriving is Donnie Brasco. Produced in 1997, it stars now-legendary actor Johnny Depp in one of his first lead roles ever, and tells the story of an undercover cop who...

You know, plenty of streaming services would treat the dog days of summer as an excuse to slow down. At Netflix, however, the content buffet is still open, baby. Despite the coronavirus pandemic shutting down all of Hollywood for an extended period of time, Netflix’s new releases for July 2020 are still jam-packed with a host of familiar originals.
The blockbuster this month is probably The Umbrella Academy season 2. The next installment for the Hargreeves family arrives on July 31. And if that’s too long of a wait for you, Netflix gets the month off to a strong start with a string of originals as well. Unsolved Mysteries arrives on July 1, followed by Warrior Nun on July 2, and The Baby-Sitter’s Club on July 3. That’s not even to mentioned the feminist take on Arthurian legend, Cursed, which premiers on July 17.
There are a couple of intriguing original movies to consider this month as well.

Jason Mitchell, who you may know from his roles in Kong: Skull Island and Straight Outta Compton, was arrested in Mississippi on Wednesday on four felony drug and weapons charges, according to law enforcement. Mitchell portrayed Eazy-e in the 2015 N.W.A. biopic and showed up as Mills in Skull Island.
After being stopped by Harrison County police, the officers found an Ak-47 semi-automatic and a Glock 19 pistol. In addition to the weapons, they found two pounds of marijuana and 1,300 doses of Mdma. The official charges are possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and two counts of possession of a weapon by a felon.
“The weed and ecstasy were packaged in a manner consistent with a mid-level distribution operation,” said police.
Meanwhile, a representative for Mitchell released a statement on the matter, explaining:
“Jason is at home with his family right now, working on an amazing new project.

The upcoming third season of The Chi won’t feature one of the series’ leads, Jason Mitchell, who was let go in May over allegations of inappropriate behavior.
The abrupt exit after Season 2 already had been finished did not allow for Mitchell’s character, Brandon, to get a proper ending. When asked by Deadline after the network’s TCA executive session, Showtime’s President of Entertainment Gary Levine confirmed that Brandon is being killed off.
“There is a lot of great life in The Chi, and there’s also death in The Chi, and that’s how we’ll be dealing with it,” he said of Mitchell’s departure.
During the executive panel, Levine and fellow Showtime President of Entertainment Jana Winograde addressed the allegations against Mitchell and the decision to sever ties with the actor.
