Remakes get a bad rap, and frankly it’s sometimes deserved. At their worst, remakes can be pointless exercises in flattening an interesting film into something broader and less singular. Whether it’s a shot-for-shot remake like Gus Van Sant’s notorious “Psycho” redux or a misguided switch up like the execrable 2012 “Total Recall,” many remakes offer nothing of value.
These issues are often only magnified when an American director decides to put their own spin on a film that originated from outside the states. From overly sentimental mush like “Coda” or “The Upside” to dismal J-horror remakes like “Apartment 1303 3D” (remember that? No we didn’t either) to Will Ferrell starring in a broad comedic take on “Force Majeure” called “Downhill,” these international remakes often have nothing to offer compared to their originator except for putting the story in English. It brings to mind Bong Joon-ho’s famous...

Distributors throughout the Mena region face a spectacular range of challenges, including a lack of screens, curfews and soaring piracy. Melanie Goodfellow profiles the major players.
The recent period of rapid political and economic change across Mena has resulted in wildly different theatrical fortunes from territory to territory.
Saudi Arabia continues to ban movie theatres but neighbouring UAE and Qatar are witnessing a huge increase in screen numbers and multiplexes and a resulting growth in box office, which is spilling over into Jordan and Iraq.
A 16-screen multiplex, a partnership between Ibrahim Taher’s Al Taher for Cinemas, Eagle Films and Selim Ramia & Co, opened in Amman over the summer. Lebanese exhibitor and distributor Empire is planning a 14-screen venue for the Kurdish Iraqi city of Erbil.
In Egypt, total box-office grosses are down compared to last year after nightly curfews led to the cancellation of evening screenings during the Eid Al-Fitr festivities, traditionally a busy...

Struggling to find your place in society, and achieve personal freedom from an overbearing parent who only thinks about themselves, are powerful incentives to drive vulnerable young adults to become susceptible to evil entities and influences. That’s certainly the case with Janet Slate, one of the lead characters in the new independent 3D horror film ‘Apartment 1303 3D,’ which is set to be released on Friday in theaters and on cable/internet VOD. Actress Julianne Michelle explores how the character’s questioning of the unknown lurking in her new apartment, which is supposed to offer her solace from her family, can actually cause more harm than she ever expected. Warner Bros. was confident enough in The Conjuring that they gave it a summer release, but we’re not sure that they expected the R-rated horror movie to cross the $40 million mark. Strong word of mouth should keep this movie in theaters for a decent amount of time and, as we reported earlier, a sequel is already in the early planning stages.
On the other hand, Warner is having a tough time with Pacific Rim. The movie won over genre critics and fans, but wasn’t able to attract a large enough audience to make up for its $190 million production budget with domestic ticket sales alone. It earned $15.9 million in its second weekend and has made a total of $68.2 million since opening in the Us.
R.I.P.D. failed to generate any real interest, placing seventh in its opening weekend. The movie carried an estimated production budget of $130 million...

Night of the Living Dead, Scream and The Blair Witch Project are three horror films that completely shook up the genre, and by extension, cinema itself, proving that cheap genre flicks aren.t always just that. Now, when it comes to Michael Taverna.s upcoming horror film Apartment 1303 3D, there won.t be any noticeable changes to cinema, only one of the ways in which it can be enjoyed. Deadline reports Gravitas Ventures and MonteCristo International have secured the theatrical and digital rights to Apartment 1303 3D, which is based on the Japanese novel by author Kei Oishi, which was itself already remade into a middling J-Horror film. What makes this particular film so special is that it will be the first independent film that can be watched in 3D at home, bringing digital platforms that much closer to their physical counterparts. Not that there are tons of indie...

Michael Taverna's film "Apartment 1303 3D" is making indie film news by becoming the first indie to play in 3D in theaters and on demand simultaneously. The thriller has been acquired by Gravitas Ventures which will first release the film via video on demand June 17 and subsequently release the film in theaters July 25. "'Apartment 1303 3D' is being released theatrically around the world and is holding its ground at the box office against higher budget 3D titles like ‘Oz’ or ‘Giant Slayer.’ This speaks to the quality of the film and of the full stereoscopic 3D as well as the demand for 3D content worldwide," said Cindy Nelson-Mullen , CEO of MonteCristo International. The film is based on a novel by Kei Ôish and is a remake of a Japanese horror film of the same name. The thriller centers on the deadly fate that befalls tenants of apartment...

Another indie drama is coming, so you better get ready for some Fast Life! So, at this moment, the only thing we know about Fast Life is that the story will center on an ad exec who falls in with an unsavory fast money crowd, only to be drawn to its antithesis when introduced to an unimpressed young woman. And...

Mischa Barton isn't afraid of the "Dark."
The former "O.C." star is set to get existentially romantic as she's signed on for the lead role in "I Will Follow You Into the Dark," according to Variety.
Barton will be playing a young woman (the "I" in the title, we're assuming) who's drawn out of a deep depression over the death of both her parents by an unexpected romance; when her new lover goes missing, she sets out to find him -- a journey that may take her beyond the "living" world. Leah Pipes ("Sorority Row"), Ryan Eggold ("90210") and Jaz Martin are also attached to star.
Hmm ... we hate to say it, but this kind of reminds us of Lindsay Lohan's brilliant train wreck of a movie, "I Know Who Killed Me," especially since it has another somewhat troubled young starlet in the lead role. Well, if the comparison ends up sticking,...
