Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap is returning to the children’s film genre with his latest production, “Little Thomas.”
The comedy-drama, which is the feature directing debut of Kaushal Oza, is slated for its world premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Iffm).
Starring Gulshan Devaiah and Rasika Duggal, alongside child actor Hridansh Parekh, “Little Thomas” marks Kashyap’s first foray into children’s cinema since his 2007 animated directorial venture “Return of Hanuman.”
Set in 1990s Goa, the film follows a seven-year-old boy’s attempts to reunite his quarreling parents in hopes of getting a baby brother. Kashyap, known for hard-hitting films like “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Ugly,” was drawn to Oza’s vision of creating a genuine children’s film from a kid’s perspective.
“It’s a difficult genre actually, to make an authentic children’s film,” Kashyap said. “So one has to ensure that it’s a good script before making it.

I’ll admit to feeling a little – no, let’s be honest, a Lot – of trepidation about watching Kill. I’m very squeamish when it comes to violence and genre films are generally not my thing. But I was curious because the film comes from a partnership of production houses Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment (headed up by Guneet Monga and Achin Jain). Guneet Monga as a producer didn’t surprise me, as her productions range from Oscar winning short films to grittier films like That Girl in Yellow Boots, Shaitan, and Peddlers. My curiousity got the better of me when I was offered a screener to watch Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s latest film, Kill, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023, as part of their “Midnight Madness” programming, which specializes in (according to the TIFF website) “the best in action, horror, shock and fantasy cinema”.

"The forgotten become irrelevant and that's the greatest fear for an actor. This can be anybody's reality. It's a tough business. It kills the mind, breaks the spirit of people & yet we come flocking in the thousands. Best wishes to Mr Samir Khakhar & everyone else who's an actor," Gulshan tweeted on Saturday.
His post comes as a reaction to a post which stated that "Samir Khakhar who played the role of Khopdi in Nukkad is looking for work".

Mumbai, Oct 24 (Ians) Actor Gulshan Devaiah feels recent controversies, related to allegations of Bollywood-drug trade nexus as well as nepotism charges, which have been surrounding the film fraternity, do not bother him.
"Without taking names, I want to say that the controversies and generalisation that have defamed our film industry in the recent past do not bother me. What bothers me is the people who are raising their voice with a huge amount of insincerity. If you know that you are an influential voice of the film industry, will you not check your own words before uttering them? That is why I have difficulty trusting them. The audience that is observing the toxicity, should sit back and try to understand who is benefitting from these controversies? As an audience, are you?" said the actor.
Gulshan has managed to make his mark in the entertainment industry across mediums.

Director Hansal Mehta's son Jai Mehta, who has assisted his father on both his acclaimed films, is all set to turn an independent director with a film chronicling the cinema and lives of the horror specialists Ramsay Brothers. While there has been a recent much-acclaimed film Ashim Ahluwalia's Miss Lovely about the cheesy horror cinema of the Ramsays, Jai who has been researching the subject for more than two years feels the saga of the Ramsays needs to be told with reverence rather than ridicule. Says the young aspiring director, "Through much of the 1970s and 80s, the Ramsays churned out innumerable horror films one after another. And they were all successful. What I find fascinating about their success saga is how much they believed in what they did. No matter how cheesy critics found their films they were made in a spirit of complete conviction. The 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will pay tribute to Anurag Kashyap, along with Italian filmmaker Elio Petri and British director and artist Ben Rivers.
Director, screenwriter and producer Anurag Kashyap presented his ambitious gangster saga Gangs of Wasseypur at Cannes Film Festival in 2012. At the same festival last year the filmmaker presented his latest feature Ugly (2013).
The festival describes Kashyap as a ““Powerful storyteller, who ingeniously injects Western cinematic styling into Indian situations…”
Among the seven movies that he will personally introduce to audiences this year at Karlovy Vary are Dev.D (2009), Gulaal (2009), and That Girl in Yellow Boots (2010).
While Ben Rivers is a contemporary British filmmaker, Elio Petri (1929-1982) was a self-taught Italian filmmaker and intellectual who took the Palme d’Or at Cannes (The Working Class Goes to Heaven, 1971) and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Investigation of a Citizen above Suspicion, 1969). A “neglected” Italian legend, a key figure in contemporary Indian cinema, and the complete work of a renowned British visual artist and filmmaker are to feature at the next Karlovy Vary film festival.
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is to pay tribute to three diverse filmmakers - Ben Rivers, Anurag Kashyap and Elio Petri - at it 49th edition, which runs July 4-12.
A year after introducing its Imagina sidebar, which focuses on movies veering from common narrative and stylistic patterns, the new festival section will offer a complete profile of British director and artist Ben Rivers, who will attend Kviff.
Rivers, whose work straddles documentary and parable, shoots in 16mm and often centres on social outsiders. Although the director focuses mainly on short films, his most well-received feature to date is A Spell to Ward Off the Darkness (2013), on which Rivers cooperated with director Ben Russell and musician Robert A. Nandita Dutta takes us into the world of the most sought after Independent producer of Mumbai, Guneet Monga
Next week, Guneet Monga heads to Cannes with an impressive lineup as a producer: Monsoon Shootout in official selection and Dabba (The Lunchbox) in International Critics’ Week.
She featured in The Hollywood Reporter’s list of 12 outstanding International women achievers in the field of entertainment a few months ago. They called her India’s go-to producer for edgy young filmmakers. The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (Iffla) conferred on her their annual Industry Leadership award.
Though her success may sound astounding, few will believe that this young woman-full of enthusiasm-travelled to her first international film festival in Venice in 2010 with some 200 posters and 20,000 handouts of That Girl in Yellow Boots. She thought she could paste posters of her film everywhere-like the festivals she had attended in school and college-and grab attention of the audience.

Kalki Koechlin has said she does not want only one type of film to be made. The actress has appeared in indie films such as That Girl in Yellow Boots and Shanghai. She told the Hindustan Times: "I don't want a dictatorship where only an Anurag Kashyap [her filmmaker husband] can make a film; or only a 'dark' filmmaker can make one kind of film. But for the longest time, that space for alternative storytelling didn't exist in Bollywood. I think it's happening now. "I never concocted a plan to change the face of Indian cinema. But I was very adamant that I won't change or mould myself to fit in... I'm only doing what I truly believe in." She went on: "I think I'm a product of a generation (more)...

She tasted success with Zoya Akhtar's 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' bub her last couple of movies like 'My Friend Pinto and Shanghai failed miserably at the box office and she was heavily criticized for that.
Ask her how she handles all this criticism she says, "I think criticism is something that comes with a territory. Anyone who complains about that, is silly. When you are out there doing anything, you are going to be criticized.

Pedal to the Medal: Death and Drugs Intermingle on the Street of Mumbai in Bala’s Impressive Debut
Vasan Bala, previously casting director and protégé of Anurag Kashyap, makes his directorial debut with Peddlers, an entrancing collision of several desperate lives in Mumbai’s underworld. Managing to avoid most of the tiring clichés with intersecting characters, Bala proves he is definitely an intriguing talent and his debut is an exciting title to seek amidst a current influx of new independent cinema coming out of India. Energetic, intriguing and laced with a great mixture of compelling narratives and arresting performances, one can only hope Bala’s film finds the audience it deserves.
We’re introduced to three very different characters, whose paths and fates will eventually cross, perhaps more than once. There’s Mac (Siddharth Menon), a petty street thief and drug dealer, raised by an uncle who has since cut ties with him.

After successful screenings at festivals across the globe, Supermen of Malegaon is slated for theatrical release in India on June 29, 2012. The film has had an extraordinary journey since the idea was first mooted but its biggest hurdle was securing a theatrical release in India, which has now been achieved.
Supermen of Malegaon is a documentary that captures a motley bunch of cinema fanatics in Malegaon, Maharashtra who remake Bollywood and Hollywood films on miniscule budgets, which they shoot, star in and screen for their local audience in Malegaon. This time, they take on the challenge of making Superman. The film follows them on this journey-at times funny, tragic and contemplative.
Supermen of Malegaon took off when Director Faiza Ahmad Khan, along with co-producer Gargey Trivedi & Siddharth Thakur, won the Asian Pitch in Singapore. The Asian Pitch is organised by Mediacorp in Singapore, Nhk in Japan and Kbs in South Korea.

Buzz: Excluding the Main Comp, there’ll be a dash of curry all along the Croisette this year as India’s New Wave is taking over. Ashim Ahluwalia‘s Miss Lovely (Un Certain Regard), Vasan Bala’s Peddlers (Critics’ Week) and this year’s record holder for the longest running time (it isn’t Sergio Leone’s extended cut of Once Upon a Time in America), in Anurag Kashyap (That Girl In Yellow Boots). A ballsy, uncompromising film with a run time of 5h20 minutes might rewrite some of Bollywood’s tired rules – we’d be definitely interested in seeing at some point in time.

If industry trade statistics are to be believed, for every single good film that is made, there are 10 other bad ones that release week after week. For anyone familiar with the Razzies concept of Hollywood, the ‘Ghanta Awards’ (‘ghanta’ being the slang for ‘rubbish’) is its desi version to celebrate and recognize the worst that Bollywood offers in terms of films, actors, technicians among some other categories.

Hard-hitting, evocative, dark are some of the terms largely associated with Anurag Kashyap's style of films. Anurag is one filmmaker who never shies away from highlighting the grim realities of the society. From Dev D to That Girl In Yellow Boots, all of Anuarg's films dealt with the darker side of life. Ask Anurag what fascinates him towards the minus side of humanity and he candidly says, "We use a story or a film to evoke the true picture of society. Now India has had the...

No, Mr Perfectionist hasn’t ventured into a new avenue. But according to Mr Anurag Kashyap, Aamir is not only an amazingly talented actor, but tactical and intelligent promoter of his films and that too, in most situations, single-handedly.
A producer himself, the director of “That Girl In Yellow Boots” is quite aware of the trials and tribulations of promoting of a film both in India and abroad as he says “We haven’t seen anyone market a film like Aamir Khan does. I wish I could hire Aamir Khan to market my films. Even if he gives guidance or any kind of support.. it is enough for me.” when speaking to Times Of India.

1. Pyaar Ka Punchnama: The year’s sleeper success that kept us awake for a good 2 hours with its celluloid anthem of ribtickling misogyny. Three room-mates and their troubled love relationships formed the core of the comic conflict. Every character and each episode spilled over with a delightful déjà vu. Debutant director Luv Ranjan managed a 3-guys-in-a-sexist-soup comedy much better than Madhur Bhandarkar in Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji. And the director did it with untried actors. Kartik Tiwari(who is now doing the same director’s nextSaathi) and Divyendu Sharma(who is in David Dhawan’s Chashme Buddoor) were among the best discoveries of the year.We luv you,Luv, for bringing push to shove without tripping over.

For admirers of films with prominent female roles, 2011 has certainly not been the best year for quality or choice. Actors have ruled the screen with substantial hero films like Ra. One, Ready and in the case of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, three major hero roles. The silence from the actresses corner has been so much that we at BollySpice have decided to bring the countdown from our usual ten down to five to adequately represent the performances throughout the year. Though it was quiet on the leading lady front in terms of roles, these five ladies gave performances that had to be singled out. See who impressed us in 2011!

Kalki Koechlin may be a surprise and unconventional addition to the list for some readers, but in 2011 she managed to pull off strong performances without the super celebrity tag that some of her contemporaries hold. She had quite a year with four different films,...

In a year that boasted some huge family friendly blockbusters and multiple films from some of the biggest stars, it was pretty easy for smaller films with tiny budgets, no big name stars or controversial subjects to fly a little under the radar. Here are ten of the best films that may have been appreciated by the critics, but failed to catch fire at the box office.
10. Soundtrack
Based on British “mockumentary” It’s All Gone Pete Tong, Soundtrack takes a premise that was a source of humour in the original film – a superstar DJ going deaf – and turns it into a touching, surprisingly subtly handled story of a man overcoming his demons and his disability. With a fantastic soundtrack (naturally!), as well as some inventive storytelling, Soundtrack has sex, drugs and rock’n'roll covered, as well as a compelling performance in the lead role from Rajeev Khandelwal.

Take Shelter (15)
(Jeff Nichols, 2011, Us) Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain, Tova Stewart. 121 mins.
After a year-long disaster-movie onslaught, apocalypse fatigue could well be setting in, but this one's worth the extra effort – particularly since it's less about the end of the world than the threat of it. That plays large in the mind of Shannon's modern-day Midwestern Noah, who sets about building his underground ark. His wife worries more about his mental health, and their day-to-day problems. Brilliantly constructed and performed, it's a domestic saga infused with haunting, unnamed dread.
50/50 (15)
(Jonathan Levine, 2011, Us) Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick. 100 mins.
The Knocked Up of cancer movies? Not quite, but this is funnier and more frank than most terminal illness movies. Gordon-Levitt is a potential victim, to whom Rogen offers blokey support.
The Deep Blue Sea (12A)
(Terence Davies, 2011, UK) Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston. 98 mins.
Davies again recreates postwar Britain, this...
