Geldwolven (Money Grubbers), the 2022 Belgian black comedy crime series directed by Gijs Polspoel and produced by Caviar, successfully mixes humour, crime, and social commentary into a clever and engaging story. The series follows Frank De Jong (Tom Van Dyck), a quiet and loyal insurance fraud expert whose life falls apart when his wife leaves him. Frustrated by how unfair and slow the world can be, Frank decides to break the rules for the first time. He joins forces with young scam artist Chris De Wolf (Joren Seldeslachts) and his friend Micky (Yannick Jozefzoon). Together, they pull off bigger and riskier cons, showing both the absurdity and the desperation of people trying to get ahead.
Tom Van Dyck gives a standout performance as Frank, showing his mix of awkwardness, humour, and moral confusion. His slow change from a shy office worker to a confident con man feels natural and fun to watch. Seldeslachts is equally strong as the charming and impulsive Chris, whose energy perfectly contrasts Frank's cautious nature. Although the series takes a few episodes to find its rhythm and gives away a key moment too soon, it grows more gripping as it goes on, mixing dark comedy with real emotion.
Visually, Geldwolven looks great for a modest budget. Belgian cities cleverly double for Spanish locations, adding variety and atmosphere. Despite relying on a few familiar crime-drama clichés, the show works because of its strong characters and believable story. At its heart, Geldwolven is about ambition, deceit, and how far ordinary people will go when honesty takes too long.
All in all, this is a sharp, stylish, and often funny piece of Flemish television. Not so fine as e.g. De Dag, Professor T. Or Undercover, but still worth watching.
