Mainland filmmaker Cheng Si Yu is a regular when it comes to action movies showing on the local video streaming platforms. Starting with “The Grandmaster of Kung Fu” (2019), “Tai Chi Master” (2022) and “Desperado” (2024) starring Danny Chan. His latest online project, “Striking Rescue”, streaming on Youku, even comes with a bigger drawcard, featuring the Muay Thai warrior himself, Tony Jaa in the lead. Interestingly, this movie managed to get a cinema release in the US and Thailand.

We’ve taken a look at Tony Jaa’s breakout hit Ong Bak in an episode of our Reel Action series that’s available on the JoBlo Originals Channel on YouTube. Since his first few Thai films, in which he was heavily involved in the action creation, Jaa would inevitably branch out into international films. Movies like Furious 7, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, Skin Trade, Triple Threat and KillZone 2 would utilize him, but the Thai star wouldn’t quite reach the kind of showmanship that he displayed in his earlier movies. The upcoming movie Striking Rescue may just be the return to form.

Martial arts films are well-suited for team-up storylines, often featuring multiple co-lead characters who unite against a common enemy. Team-ups can occur between initially perceived enemies who later realize they are on the same side, adding excitement and conflict to the plot. Martial arts movie team-ups provide thrilling action sequences and chemistry between the heroes, creating an engaging and enjoyable viewing experience.
Martial arts films are often headlined by one main protagonist, but there are also many great martial arts movie star team-ups, as well. The Jim Caviezel film Sound of Freedom made a splash at the box office after seemingly coming out of nowhere. However, it had a bumpy road to release after its initial producers, 20th Century Fox, had been acquired by Disney, and the film would wait to be unveiled after crowdfunding gave it a new life. Sound of Freedom is one of the notable films of the summer as it rose out of obscurity to garner around $130 million in its domestic run while hoping to bring awareness to a heavy subject akin to movies like Taken, Skin Trade, and the Academy Award-winning Spotlight.
The film’s distributor, Angel Studios, has recently announced their plans to expand their screenings into worldwide markets. According to The Hollywood Reporter, on Wednesday, the studio “announced release dates for 21 markets, including the U.K., Australia, Spain, South Africa and a host of countries in Latin America.

Undisputed 5 could bring aboard many great martial arts stars for Yuri Boyka's return to the ring. The Undisputed franchise first introduced Yuri Boyka (Scott Adkins) in Isaac Florentine's Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing, with the highly formidable Mma fighter Boyka determined to prove himself worthy of the title of The Most Complete Fighter in the World. Though he was introduced as the antagonist of Undisputed 2, Boyka quickly became the Undisputed franchise's central character, returning as the protagonist of Undisputed 3: Redemption and Boyka: Undisputed.
Though Scott Adkins says there is a script for Undisputed 5, the next chapter of the Undisputed series has not yet gotten off the ground. Californication alum Evan Handler is set as a new series regular on season 6 of Power, and Mike Dopud and Monique Gabriela Curnen, who recurred in seasons 4 and 5, have been promoted to regulars for the upcoming season of Starz’s hit drama series.
Handler will play Jacob Warner, the new U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District, there to clean up one too many messes and not built to play nice. Formidable and powerful, he will use the position and authority to challenge those around him to get answers.
Dopud plays Jason Micic, a brutal and ruthless Serbian crime boss, and Tommy’s connect, with sights on expanding his network to both coasts at any cost.
Curnen plays Blanca Rodriguez, the incorruptible NYPD Internal Affairs investigator that zeroed in on Angela Valdes while conducting the investigation of the disappearance and probable murder of Detective Raymond Jones, Raina’s killer and a suspected dirty cop.

Thanks to our friends at Magnet Releasing, TwitchFilm readers now have an opportunity to win Skin Trade on Blu-ray! Skin Trade is an all out martial arts action film starring Tony Jaa, Dolph Lundgren (who also wrote the film's story), Michael Jai White, Ron Perlman, and Peter Weller, and it definitely delivers in the kicks-to-the-face department. Our Jim Tudor reviewed the film on it's initial release, and while he was dubious of the overall quality, he did have this to say about the action:There's jaw-cracking roundhouse action and as many explosions as the film's modest budget could afford. Lundgren, as the driving force in and behind this film, gladly utilizes the violent-justice protocol that Stallone locked down in First Blood, Part II, and later was nudged...

After making a big splash on the small screen with Game of Thrones on HBO, it’s a wonder that competing networks haven’t shopped around George R.R. Martin’s other fantasy. That’s all about to change, though, after the esteemed author himself announced that Cinemax – a channel that also acts as a home to Banshee and The Knick – has snapped up the rights to create a live-action series based on Martin’s horror novella Skin Trade.
Billed as an “offbeat werewolf noir,” it’s understood that the project has entered the very early stages of planning, with Martin quick to note that Cinemax optioning the property doesn’t necessarily guarantee that it’ll see the light of day.

Cinemax, sister station to HBO, the home of "Game of Thrones," confirmed that it has ordered a screenplay of "Skin Trade," Martin's 1988 award-winning novella about a werewolf. -Break- The paycaster describes the plot thus: "Willie Flambeaux, a collections agent who happens to be a werewolf and his friend Randi Wade, a private investigator, discover a dark secret behind a series of grisly murders in their decaying industrial city." Kalinda Vazquez, who worked as an executive producer on "Once Upon a Time" after stints on "Nikita" and "Prison Break," is handling the adaptation. The next "Game of Thrones" could be right around the corner, with author George R.R. Martin announcing that Cinemax has optioned the rights to another one of his works.
Martin, who penned the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series that inspired "Thrones," revealed the news on his blog, writing that Cinemax has already ordered a pilot script based on "The Skin Trade," a novella Martin released in the 1980s that he describes as "werewolf noir." Before he penned sprawling, licentious, violent fantasy epics, George R. R. Martin penned slimmer but equally licentious and violent werewolf stories. The Skin Trade, his celebrated 1989 novella that predates his Song of Ice and Fire series, has now been optioned by HBO's sister channel Cinemax. (No word yet if Cinemax will work The Skin Trade into their Skinemax programming yet, but what a howl that would be.) The novella appears in the short-story anthology Dark Visions, also known as Night Visions 5, which also features stories by Stephen King and Dan Simmons and was later reissued as The Skin Trade after Martin's ascension to genre icon. The noirish novella concerns a private investigator and his friend, a collections agent who also happens to be a werewolf, as they investigate a series of grisly murders. Martin will not be writing or running the show, however, as he has a book to...

With the all-conquering Game Of Thrones dominating his recent career, it's easy to forget that George R.R. He was heavily involved with Beauty And The Beast and the '80s iteration of The Twilight Zone, and he currently has Captain Cosmos developing at HBO. Now he's setting up another new series. Martin himself made the announcement over the weekend on his blog. The story follows a collections agent who happens to be a werewolf and his friend, a private investigator, as they discover a dark secret behind a series of grisly murders in their decaying city.
The story was originally penned for the fifth volume of Dark Harvest's annual horror anthology work "Night Vision". The project went on to win the World Fantasy Award and has since been adapted into comic form.
Mark B. Newbauer optioned the show rights and will executive produce the series. Martin met with a dozen writers to adapt the property with Kalinda Vazquez asked to pen the script. Vazquez, Martin, Vince Gerardis,...

It’s been a full 25 years since Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered us back to the carpet – toy in hand, of course – though it looks as though the former Governor has passed on the torch as Detective John Kimble, with news arriving that Dolph Lundgren will be taking the reins for Kindergarten Cop 2.
That’s right, from one Expendable to another, Lundgren will play a different undercover cop than his musclebound amigo, with the sequel having him infiltrate a nursery as he narrows his hunt for a group of Albanian baddies. Playing against type much like Schwarzenegger in Ivan Reitman’s heartwarming 1990 original, Lundgren is set to try his hand at playing a teacher. Expect cheesy one-liners and heartwarming humor by the bucket load.
From what we understand, filming is already underway on Kindergarten Cop 2 in Vancouver, with plans to release the long-rumored sequel as a straight-to-dvd affair. American Pie 2 co-writer David H.

25 years after Arnold Schwarzenegger first yelled at some kids as Detective John Kimble, Kindergarten Cop 2 has suddenly gone into production. This time it's Dolph Lundgren, playing a different undercover cop who has to infiltrate a different nursery in pursuit of Albanian bad guys because of reasons. Heartwarming hilarity will no doubt ensue. This isn't the first time Dolph has appeared in a sequel to a film that first starred a fellow Expendable. A few years ago he also turned out for Uwe Boll's In The Name Of The King: Two Worlds, taking the lead from Jason Statham. At the time he told Empire he did that film for some divorce cash. Lance Henriksen also once told us that he'll occasionally take an "alimony film". So maybe that's what's going on here.Or maybe Dolph just wanted some light relief after grimly violent recent efforts like Skin Trade (with Michael Jai White...

Since his role in the blockbusting ensemble piece The Expendables, Dolph Lundgren has been somewhat of a tour-de-force in the world of direct-to-market action flicks. From straight forward action movies like Hard Rush and A Certain Justice, to more fantastical films such Battle of the Damned and Legendary, Lundgren has been tolling away in the genre starring in films that, whilst not all are entirely successful, are ways apart from his pre-Expendables career.
The reason for his recent success, in this reviewers opinion, seems to be his willingness to share the limelight. Where once he may have demanded the mot screen time, a headline on the poster etc., these days his films are more about the ensembles within them. He’s starred alongside the likes of Vinnie Jones, Randy Couture, Cung Le (an underrated action star...

Dolph Lundgren is a hard action star to pin down. It's not because he's been in less movies than, say, Jean-Claude Van Damme. It's not because he's had fewer hits than Steven Seagal. It's because while peers like Stallone and Schwarzengger were off making sequel after sequel, Lundgren, who has a master's degree in chemical engineering, was happy to start a family and take on a few movies here and there. When Lundgren does take on a movie, it's almost always something that stands on its own independent of a big franchise. And the latest project to fit that bill is Skin Trade, an intense action movie set in the very real world of human trafficking. Lundgren wrote and produced Skin Trade (available now on Video On Demand), which finds him playing a...

Dolph Lundgren hasn’t enjoyed the same continued prominence as many of his equally hulking, stone-jawed peers – unlike Arnie, who has a new Terminator out this summer, or Sylvester Stallone, who’ll play Rocky again for fall spinoff Creed, the towering Swede has been contained to bargain-bin fare and occasional cameos in The Expendables. And though no one is contesting his ability to throw a punch, Lundgren still hasn’t had his True Lies moment, so to speak.
I wish I could report that Skin Trade was that watershed for the actor, that perfect part to elevate him from man-mountain to dramatic heavyweight – but it’s just not the case. As vengeful New Jersey cop Nick Cassidy, Lundgren is working well within his wheelhouse, and the ease with which the performer manages his dialogue speaks to how standard a part Skin Trade gives him. That shouldn’t come as a surprise – after all,...

Skin Trade unites two very different kinds of action stars, which makes for a pretty exciting ride. In one corner we have Dolph Lundgren, a veteran of the genre who has appeared in classics like Rocky IV, Universal Soldiers and The Expendables trilogy. In the other corner we have Tony Jaa, the Thai martial artist who starred in the Ong Bak trilogy and had a memorable supporting role in Furious 7.
Lundgren, who also wrote and produced Skin Trade, stars as Nick Cassidy, a New Jersey detective intent on shutting down a human trafficking network run by Serbian mobster Viktor Dragovic (Ron Perlman). But after shooting Viktor’s son, Nick finds his life left in ruins after his wife and daughter are killed as revenge.

Even a Swedish brute like Ivan Drago -- ahem, Dolph Lundgren -- understands that when you're offered a role in a Coen brothers film, you don't turn it down, even if you feel you might be just a tiny bit out of place. "The casting was a bit of a shocker. They called me out of nowhere a few months ago," tells Lundgren of his small role in the Coens' next film, Hail, Caesar! "I'm a huge fan of theirs and I never expected to be in any Coen brothers movies, but I guess I am!" The quotes come from a recent interview with Creative Screenwriting, in which Lundgren speaks mostly of his upcoming film Skin Trade, which he wrote, but also informs us a bit about his experience on the set of the Joel and Ethan Coen's latest project. "It's a movie set in the 1950s called Hail,...

No one could ever accuse the Coen Brothers of skewing predictable in their movies, and their upcoming period comedy Hail, Caesar! sounds just as bonkers and brilliant as you would hope. Dolph Lundgren, who co-stars in the pic, recently let slip some details about both his role and that of Channing Tatum’s – and what the action star had to say was highly intriguing.
Speaking with Creative Screenwriting about action movie Skin Trade (opening this Friday), Lundgren touched on his part in the movie, about a studio fixer named Eddie Mannix (George Clooney) who deals with a vast array of problems on a Hollywood backlot during one crazy day, from a knocked-up starlet to a muckraking journalist.
Lundgren is well-aware that he’s not the kind of actor you see in movies by directors like the Coen Brothers. He admitted:

Tony Jaa and Dolph Lundgren come from very different camps within the action genre. Weaned on a diet of martial arts before making his breakout in high-octane fighting series Ong Bak, the former is among some of the best fighters to break into Hollywood. On the other hand, Lundgren is best known for his role as the unyielding man-mountain Ivan Drogo in Rocky IV, before flexing his muscles alongside his genre contemporaries Stallone and Schwarzenegger for The Expendables franchise.
Fast forward to 2015 and the fresh-faced Jaa is set to team up with the action stalwart for Ekachai Uekrongtham’s Skin Trade, a hard-boiled thriller that puts them in pursuit of Ron Perlman’s elusive Serbian mobster.
Due to premiere in Los Angeles tomorrow, Wednesday 6, there’s a buzz of excitement for the arrival of Uekrongtham’s actioner, and We Got This Covered has 5 pairs of tickets to give away to our readers.

Want some action? We’ve got plenty from two guys who know to create it. From Spawn to Falcon Rising, Michael Jai White has never shied away from the heat and he proves it again with his new film, Skin Trade. Plus Christian Kane balances the thrills in The Librarians, but proves his musical side in the new project 50 To One. Now, think about it – wouldn’t he make a great Wolverine? We ask for his reaction to that.

This weekend saw the release of two solid action films from performers many fans had already written off, Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa — my review of Kung Fu Killer and Skin Trade can be found here — and inspired by this happy surprise we’re doing two things. I’m listing the twelve best movie fight scenes *and* we’re giving away five of Yen’s best movies on Blu-ray (well, technically four of his best plus Iceman)! It’s worth noting that compiling a list of the best fight scenes is a daunting goddamn task. I’m focusing on hand-to-hand fights, with or without weapons, and avoiding gun fights, war movies and the likes of Godzilla vs King Kong. For me the best fights rely mostly on a combination of skill and choreography — while fights accomplished strictly through editing or with a heavy dose of wire-fu/CG can be entertaining and a lot of fun they’re...

Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa are two of cinema’s best action stars, but both men have seen a rough few years on screen. Yen had his solid 2011 film, Wu Xia, get lost down the Weinstein Company rabbit hole and then delivered three movies in a row (Special ID, The Monkey King, Iceman) that obscured his fighting talents behind CG, wire work and costume shenanigans. Jaa meanwhile had a very public breakdown while filming 2010’s Ong Bak 3 which left him in the wind (or in the jungle according to reports) before finally returning last year with the terribly underwhelming CG-fest of The Protector 2. Neither man is in his physical prime anymore — although they could obviously still kick our collective asses — but if their latest releases are any indication they have no plans on throwing the towel in any time soon. ———————————————– Skin Trade Two cops on opposite ends of the Earth are brought together to take down...

Sheesh. Want to excite me about a mediocre thriller about cops doing cop things in Bangkok? Throw Tony Jaa and Dolph Lungren together. Skin Trade might not have the high octane action sequences of The Raid but man, does it ever look like fun.
Lungren plays a police officer who goes to Bangkok and teams up with a local cop, played by Jaa, to take down the leader of a human smuggling operation. That leader? None other than Ron Perlman. If that’s not enough awesome, the movie also includes Peter Weller and Michael Jai White.
Also worth noting: Lungren has co-writing credit.
