Super Shark (2011)

FAQ

Super Shark

FAQ

When a Treymar Industries oil rig collapses off the coast of California, Oceanic Investigation Bureau (OIB) agent and marine biologist Dr. Catherine "Kat" Carmichael (Sarah Lieving) comes to investigate. She charters the Blue Moon, captained by Skipper Chuck (Tim Abell), and decides, after taking a water sample, that the destruction was caused by Treymar pumping a toxic "hydrolizing agent" into the water, which weakened the foundation of the platform and eventually caused it to collapse. Meanwhile, the real cause of the rig's collapse—a giant, growling shark that can walk on its pectoral fins—moves to Los Angeles and begins chomping on divers, surfers, swimmers, and bikini-clad models.

Super Shark was filmed from a screenplay written by Clyde McCoy, Antonio Olivas, and Fred Olen Ray.

Kat speculates that the Super Shark is some prehistoric variety, possibly a Megalodon, that it was lying dormant in an underground chamber, and that Treymar's drilling process released it when the drill broke through the rock.

When neither bullets, machine guns, flame throwers, nor underwater charges are able to penetrate the shark's tough skin, Army National Guard Captain Jackson (Randy Mulkey) calls in his secret weapon, a prototype of a "walking tank". Kat and Chuck bring along a weapon, too—a large speaker and a boombox—by which they can broadcast radio waves and listen for the shark's disruptive plasmodic signal as a means of telling them that the shark is near. Kat also asks Captain Jackson to install a C-4 with a remote detonator on the boombox. With the help of the speaker, the shark is lured to the beach, but it quickly decimates the walking tank. In a last ditch effort, Kat attempts to lure the shark toward her boombox. When the shark responds, she runs into a cave and, when the shark tries to follow her into it, she tosses the boombox down its throat and detonates it. In the final scene, Treymar's director of operations, Roger Wade (John Schneider), assures the public in a television interview that Treymar will rebuild the oil rig and continue to search for new and deeper sources of energy.

Wade says, "It's like Sarah always said, Drill, baby, drill." He is referring to a 2008 vice-presidential debate in which Republic candidate Sarah Palin, then Governor of Alaska, used the phrase "Drill, baby, drill" in her debate against Democratic candidate Joe Biden.
