Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia is one of only two dammed lakes in America which pump water back up from below into the lake. Water generates electricity all day at peak rates, then at night is pumped back up from below.
Smith Mountain Lake was formed in 1966 when the Appalachian Power Company built the dam at the convergence of the Roanoke River and Blackwater.
