Depressing life in the Italian suburbs

This is a story about a handful of destinies living in the suburbs of Rome, where buildings and lives are falling apart, partly because of poverty and boredom, but also because of destiny, it seems.

The plot evolves around three young boys (one of them is called 'Nigger' as he is of African descent), and a man who just got out of prison, and their common acquaintances around town. Because of their poor upbringing and lack of guidance and help, none of the characters seem able to escape their everyday troubles, which has fatal consequences near the end of the film.

I had the pleasure of watching this film at the Copenhagen film-festival in April 2011, where the two directors Matteo Botrugno and Daniele Coluccini were present, and answered a few questions about the movie. I can't recall everything they said, but I do remember that they mentioned, that life in the suburbs was very gloomy, and hard to escape from, once you're born into it, and this film tried to show people (mostly Italians I presume), what the consequences of this problem would eventually lead to, as former drug-dealers have no other choice but to continue dealing drugs, even after serving time in jail, etc.

So, overall, I can only give this film a 6/10, because it was definitely very well acted, written and directed, but the overall message and feeling was just so miserable, and generally pointless, that you just felt very depressed after watching it. But even so, it did carry a quite important message, which shouldn't be ignored. As of yet, it doesn't have an official distribution date, but hopefully it will come soon.
