The V/H/S franchise is returning this autumn with a new holiday-themed entry. As reported by Variety, Shudder has officially announced V/H/S/Halloween, the eighth instalment in the found footage anthology series, which will debut on the platform on 3 October.

Continuing the franchise’s legacy of mixing new and established voices in horror, V/H/S/Halloween will feature segments directed by Paco Plaza, Alex Ross Perry, and Appendage director Anna Zlokovic. There are less than 100 days until Halloween, my ghouls! And to celebrate, Shudder has given us some beautiful news: there’s a new V/H/S film coming this October! Simply titled V/H/S: Halloween, the film is set to release on October 3, 2025, and will include segments from Bryan M. Ferguson, Casper Kelly, Micheline Pitt-Norman & R.H. Norman, Alex Ross Perry, Paco Plaza, and Anna Zlokovixc.

While there’s no official plot synopsis yet, the title alone makes it sound like we’ll be getting segments not based on a time period, but instead inspired by Halloween. Will they all take place on Halloween night? How will they all be connected? We’ll have to tune in this October to find out.

And it’s a 50/50 split whether horror fans will be, either, in this Kelly Marie Tran-led outing written and directed by Shal Ngo (based on his Hulu short film Control). At this year’s International Fantastic film festival of Catalonia, I got bitten all over. Not by vampires or werewolves, alas, but by mosquitoes, which took advantage of the unseasonably hot temperatures on Spain’s Costa del Garraf to transform my body into a throbbing, misshapen mass, rather like William Hurt in Altered States. Still, this helped me feel a kinship with the protagonists of this year’s exercises in body horror, many of them bearing the imprint of Shudder, a streaming service available in the UK, Ireland and Germany but not elsewhere in Europe. But it was one of their titles – Argentinian director Demián Rugna’s When Evil Lurks – that became the first Latin American movie in the festival’s 56-year history to win the Sitges award for best feature film.

The transformative body part and the film's stylistic approach were inspired by many other films that rely on the human body to deliver its horror element, says director Anna Zlokovic.

Appendage is Zlokovic's feature-length directorial debut. She was named one of "IndieWire's 28 Rising Female Filmmakers to Watch in 2023." “You’re a pathetic freak,” groans the gruesome being chained to a post in the basement of an apartment building. The creepy thing — disfigured and looking like Gollum’s drinking buddy — is addressing Hannah, who has chained stashed the beast away. That doesn’t stop the creature from telling Hannah how awful she is, sentiments it possesses because it came from Hannah and has been feeding off her insecurities, growing stronger and more devious by the day.

These scenes and others even more creepy play out with freaky fun aplomb in Appendage, writer/director Anna Zlokovic’s feature film debut. Say what you will about this offbeat, darkly humorous horror thriller, but it’s certainly a wakeup call to pay attention to that gnawing critical voice inside of you, which can really get the better of you. In Appendage it does, and Hannah (Hadley Robinson of Little Women) is never the same.

The concept of turning successful short films into full-length features is quite popular. Although, for the horror genre, it fails to work in most cases. While the short may be riveting enough and deserving of rounds of applause, the film that comes out of it seems stretched out and vapid. The most prominent example of this happening has to be the 2016 downer Lights Out, which was based on a three-minute long short that scared the hell out of even the bravest of the brave. Writer-director Anna Zlokovic doesn't waste any time establishing the horror premise of her film Appendage. Immediately in the first scene, it's clear that there's something very wrong with aspiring fashion designer Hannah (Hadley Robinson), and things only get worse from there. So many modern horror movies rely on slow builds and vague hints that it's refreshing for Appendage to reveal its grotesque monster early on. The problem is that Zlokovic runs through so much plot so quickly that Appendage nearly exhausts its premise before it really gets going. The one-note allegory about a monstrous manifestation of the protagonist's anxieties and fears wears thin before Appendage is halfway over.

Even if its message is a bit strained, Appendage is still quite entertaining, especially when Zlokovic leans into its campier elements. Appendage introduces Hannah during a tense family dinner with her wealthy parents in the suburbs, as her mother takes passive-aggressive digs...

While horror is always a popular genre among moviegoers, they have a special attachment to it in October since Halloween brings new vibes to these films. Given the genre's popularity, several movies have been released over the past few months, including Last Voyage of the Demeter, The Nun II, and A Haunting in Venice, but many more are set to be released in the coming months.

Actress and author Emily Hampshire has a lot on her plate lately. In addition to starring in The Roku Channel’s Slip, alongside writer-director-star Zoe Lister-Jones, she’s got a handful of other projects in the pipeline, including the “funny and smart” horror film Appendage, adapted from director Anna Zlokovic’s short of the same name, and Bloody Hell, a coming of age film about sex and sexuality.

The horror film “Jagged Mind,” starring Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Shannon Woodward, from 20th Digital Studio and Hulu Originals will world premiere at the American Black Film Festival in Miami Beach.

The festival runs June 14 to June 18. The film will debut exclusively on Hulu on June 15 and on Disney+ (via Star) internationally at a later date.

Directed by Kelley Kali (“I’m Fine (Thanks for Asking)”), “Jagged Mind” is about a woman plagued by blackouts and strange visions that lead her to discover she’s stuck in a series of time loops, possibly related to her mysterious new girlfriend. But only one out of approximately every 5,000 female ones arrive at them for the same diagnostic reason as the heroine of “Bloody Hell.” Molly McGlynn’s second feature focuses on a 16-year-old distressed to discover she has a rare congenital disorder that considerably complicates her nascent sex life, formative sexual identity and indeed basic sexual plumbing. This SXSW-premiering Canadian seriocomedy is a bit less focused and effective than the writer-director’s prior “Mary Goes Round,” but it’s still accomplished, and similarly renders relatable the sometimes self-defeating behaviors of a protagonist who’s got a lot of issues on her plate.
