    Summary

Reviewers say 'Ash' is a mixed sci-fi horror film with praised originality, atmosphere, and visual effects. Eiza González and Aaron Paul deliver strong performances, and the direction by Flying Lotus, along with cosmic horror elements, receives positive remarks. However, criticisms arise regarding the story's execution, pacing, and editing, deemed derivative and unoriginal. The CGI and special effects are often subpar, detracting from the experience. Despite compelling final scenes, the film struggles to fully engage or satisfy a significant audience.

5.25/10 STARS - Appreciate the originality, but it didn't hit the mark.

ASH is a sci-fi horror directed by Flying Lotus. It stars Eiza González and Aaron Paul and was written by Jonni Remmler. It tells the story of Riya, who wakes up find that the crew of her space station has been killed. She doesn't know what has happened or who she is, but has quick flashes of nightmarish memories as time progresses. When another crew member shows up to offer help, Riya isn't sure she can trust him. The movie is a mash-up of mystery, sci-fi, and horror, and some parts are executed well while others fall short of hitting the mark. It is also in many ways symbolic representation of battling one's own demons, and there are multiple times where lighting and other scene events leave clues as to what is going on. A re-watch might reveal even more instances of such clues. ASH is not a sequel or a remake, so I do give this movie props for trying to be something original (though clearly influenced by superior films that came before it such as The Thing and Alien). Unfortunately, the writer and director have trouble fully sticking the landing with the execution and the story as a whole, and I left the theater feeling a bit disappointed that I couldn't enjoy this one more. Quick Take movie review on my YouTube channel.

Objectively, this is a pretty bad movie

Went in without having seen a trailer and only having read a brief synopsis, left confused and disappointed. The film is a jumbled aggregations of themes and concepts that have played out in other prominent sci fi films dating back to 2001: Space Odyssey and there are scenes that are straight ripped from others (looking at robot assisted medical procedures). Aside from some trippy fractal visuals that are never really explained, the sets are basic, special effects pretty minimal, and acting pretty bad across the board. The main character Raya is hot, so there is that. Twists and turns at the end kind of clue one onto what's going on, but it's clunky.

As my viewing mate said to me about ten minutes in "This is a very B movie".

    Lacking a decent script

The production value is high, the actors are solid, the sets are fine. But this is has got to be the most overused clichéd script I have ever seen.

The scifi elements are just enough to create a coherent plot and unify all the elements. But it is incredibly boring slog fest, which they have tried to make more intelligent by the most overused trope of the main character losing their memory.

I think this is the wave of AI generated scripts. This simply has no value, there are so many better movies who have almost the identical plot.

It only requires two movie they stole from, and I cant really call it influenced. I have no idea how something can simply rip off the idea from "The thing", mix it with a bit of "Alien" to pad out the scenes, and actually manage to get it made.

These are two of the most most influential movies in the genre, didn't someone notice how it was such as blatent and poor ripoff.

    Cheesy... In An Awful Way.

Ash (2025) starring Eiza Gonzales and Aaron Paul, is a low budget horror / sci-fi film directed by Flying Lotus. In his debut directoral effort, Flying Lotus delivers a film that is as innovative as a mouldy bologna sandwich. Everything you see here has already been done better, with a much larger budget and crew. I was shocked at the quality of the film, which hearkens back to cheap, Saturday afternoon, B- movie television fare.

If you're looking for film school quality - as in Cinematography 101 - the movie easily hits its mark. There is something very polished about the delivery if you're not expecting professional results. If you're expecting a great, thematically developed, theater-ready and technically excellent feature movie, you're in for a disappointment.

The actors don't have much to do in this film, other than deliver the basics of happiness, anger, confusion and rage. There was likely a bit of time in the makeup chair to create a semblance of Body-horror - but the layers here aren't deep at all.

Post production actually does a passable job with trippy, acid-inspired flashbacks and special effects. The color palette is very Nicolas Winding Refin-inspired. If you need an out-of-body experience, a matinee of Ash might serve you well.

Though I could not enjoy this film, I am definitely interested to see the next project Flying Lotus undertakes - the creative potential is there, once you trundle past the tired, overused tropes, and I saw a fair number of fans in my theater's audience.

If you're looking for blockbuster, transcendental acting, directing and cinematography, skip this movie. If you enjoy tropes exploding from the screen in sloppy, gory, messy and predictable fashion, you may enjoy Ash. I, unfortunately, did not.

    5 out of 10 stars.

Only works as a profile for Flying Lotus music

Otherwise, the movie is tension free and not enough of a plot for a feature. I was looking forward to this based on the mysterious description. After watching it, the movie is an extremely basic sci fi action thriller with robotic horror thriller events that don't work. It's formatted with a plot device that delays the inevitable reveal while establishing atmosphere without any dialogue for large portions of the film.

As such, I found the film relaxing and the script had the quality of a wandering mind. No, I don't think the explanation makes up for it and it feels inappropriate for the film.
