The BFI has appointed Mia Bays as the new director of its Film Fund.
Joining for an initial three-year term, Bays will lead the strategic and cultural direction of the BFI’s investment of National Lottery funds into supporting U.K. feature film production. At approximately £30 million a year, it is the largest public fund in the UK for film and filmmakers, as well as new and emerging talent through BFI Network.
Bays is currently director-at-large for Birds’ Eye View, a U.K. charity that centres the female perspective in film and campaigns for gender equality in the industry. She will remain in a consultancy role with Birds’ Eye View and intends to return there at the end of her three-year contract with the BFI Film Fund.
Bays will take up her new role in October, based between London and Nottingham.

Since winning Berlin’s European Shooting Star Award for the low-budget British crime drama Ill Manors in 2012, Riz Ahmed has burst onto the film and TV scene in somewhat spectacular fashion. To celebrate the home entertainment release of Outlaws, available on DVD 18th February 2019, we have a copy of the DVD up for grabs, courtesy of Altitude Entertainment. A violent power struggle threatens to tear a motorcycle gang apart, in a gritty crime thriller featuring the stars of Wolf Creek 2 and The Neon Demon, from the makers of Black Mass and Ill Manors.
Sons of Anarchy meets Macbeth in Stephen McCallum’s directorial debut, about leadership tussles in an outlaw motorcycle club down under. Following the bleak, unforgiving path of recent Australian crime classics Animal Kingdom and Snowtown and Chopper, Outlaws (previously known as 1%) is a brash and brutal crime thriller about loyalty and revenge. Ryan Corr, who was put through hell in Wolf Creek 2, is plunged into another maelstrom here as would-be biker king Paddo. A bulked-up Matt Nable (Ra’s al Ghul from the TV series Arrow), who also co-wrote the film,...

South-east London isn’t always the perfect match for the glamour of the big screen. With The Bromley Boys on the horizon, here are six brave productions that buck the trend
When a film is set in London, it can often feel like the whole thing was directed by the tourist board. There’ll be an aerial shot of the London Eye. The Shard will glint in the background. There’ll be taxis by the bucketload. If you’re shooting Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction, characters will attend aggressively sexualised therapy sessions right at the top of the Gherkin. It’s all very narrow and heavy on the landmarks.
Sometimes the suburbs get a look-in, but not all of them. North and west London may have featured in everything from Shaun of the Dead to Bend It Like Beckham, and east London might have been used as a shorthand for...

If the generational chasm exposed by last week’s election came as shock, you clearly haven’t been watching British movies. Young people have a raw enough deal already – austerity, student debt, unaffordable housing, Ed Sheeran – but British cinema has been rubbing their noses in it for a while, serving them grim tales of broken families and criminal career paths, from ’hood dramas like Kidulthood and Ill Manors to arthouse downers like Fish Tank and last month’s The Levelling, in which a Somerset teen puts her studies on hold to come and clear out the family stables – literally and metaphorically. Show almost anyone a picture of Riz Ahmed and they’ll be able to place him in something. It could be from Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker’s 2008 Big Brother zombie invasion satire, Dead Set. It might be as Aaron Kalloor, the Mark Zuckerberg techno genius who occupied one of the more interesting threads from Jason Bourne. More realistically, it’ll be from last year’s billion dollar Star Wars blockbuster, Rogue One, in which he played conflicted pilot Bodhi Rook. The point is, you can’t pigeon hole the guy.
Take this week’s City of Tiny Lights, in which Ahmed plays a London private eye investigating the case of a missing sex worker. The film might drown in its own dimly lit gloom, but the fact you stick with it is down to another chameleonic performance from the young Brit. You can read our review here.

There's a scene early on in Brotherhood, the concluding chapter in Noel Clarke's British Hood trilogy, in which his Sam Peel checks himself out in a changing room mirror after a rigorous gym session. He ends up sadly patting his emerging belly and you realise that whatever his original intentions for this series, Sam has become his Rocky Balboa.
Having played the antagonist in 2006's Kidulthood and then switched gears in the hit 2008 sequel Adulthood to show the difficulties of that character's life after being released from prison, Brotherhood ties up a lot of loose ends but also rediscovers Sam a little further down the line, much like Sylvester Stallone brought back his most iconic character in Rocky Balboa or Creed. Sam the character has nothing like the innate sympathy that the Italian Stallion evokes, but the connecting tissue in all...

If you didn’t see his break-out role in one of the century’s best comedies, Four Lions, then we imagine Riz Ahmed first landed on your radar as the doomed assistant to Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler. Along with his high-profile performances in The Night Of, Rogue One, and Jason Bourne this year, one of the two Tiff films he has is the starring vehicle City of Tiny Lights, as noted in our fall festival preview.
Directed by Dredd‘s Pete Travis, it follows Ahmed as a London detective who gets entangled in a missing-girl case as a complex web of lies bubble up. We now have the first clip thanks to THR, which shows Ahmed on the case as he visits his ex-girlfriend at a local bar. Check out the clip below for the film also starring Cush Jumbo, James Floyd, Billie Piper, and Roshan Seth.

Hollywood's next action hero: Ed Skrein on stepping into Jason Statham's shoes and fighting Deadpool
Three years ago Ed Skrein broke through on the big screen with roles in Brit flicks Piggy and Ill Manors. Now, after a brief stop over on Game of Thrones, he's poised to become Hollywood next big action star thanks to The Transporter Refuelled, a fresh take on the franchise previously led by Jason Statham.
Beyond that Skrein will be heading into Fox's Marvel universe to play assassin Ajax in Deadpool. Digital Spy caught up with the fast-rising actor to discuss his two hotly-anticipated movies.
How did Transporter Refuelled get pitched to you - is this a reboot or sequel to the previous films?
"From the beginning, everyone's always spoken about it in terms of when they would change personnel on Bond, that it would keep the same variables and the same things that the franchise is known for. But the change of personnel would change quite a lot of things,...

First announced at Cannes two years ago, Luc Besson and his EuropaCorp accomplices' Transporter reboot is now almost upon us. Ed Skrein (Ill Manors and, more recently, Deadpool's Ajax) takes over the driving seat from Jason Statham this time in The Transporter Refuelled, directed by Camille Delamarre (Brick Mansions). And here's the latest trailer, in which the unusually decent Audi driver hurts a number of fools and wrecks a number of vehicles, as is traditional and required. There's also a snazzy jump over a plane. We do love a good car jump.Should you be wondering, the re-casting of the main role has not also prompted the creation of a new character. This is not, we're to accept, a different transporter, but the very same Frank Martin (although we're possibly in prequel territory, which explains the hair). Martin is, you'll recall, the driver who never changes the deal and...

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Europa Corp. and 20th Century Fox would have called time on The Transporter series following the departure of hardboiled action veteran Jason Statham, but low and behold, seven years after the previous installment, an all-new trilogy beckons.
It’s one that will rev into action later this year with The Transporter Refueled, which ushers franchise newcomer Ed Skrein into the title role. Best known for his work on The Tunnel and Ill Manors, along with a part in next year’s Deadpool, the actor will get behind the wheel for Camille Delamarre’s soft reboot – one which seemingly retains the globe-trotting heist action from the original trilogy.
Mind you, The Stath brought a considerable amount of gravitas to the role of Frank Martin, lending a palpable sense of charm to an otherwise generic set-up. It’s understood Refueled will kick Statham’s character to the kerb,...

With filming well under way in Vancouver, Deadpool adds another cast member, with English actor/rapper Ed Skrein (Ill Manors, the upcoming The Transporter Refueled) joining Ryan Reynolds as the one and only Deadpool, T.J. You pretty much know what to expect from a Transporter film: fisticuffs, flash cars and attractive women. But what you also usually expect is Jason Statham gravel-growling and scowling his way through the running time. Things have changed for this reboot, with Ill Manors’ Ed Skrein stepping into his sharp suit as Frank Martin. The first trailer for The Transporter Refueled is now online via Apple.Mostly it’s business as usual for Frank: there is a package (in this case, two bewigged women) to be delivered somewhere for shady types and a lot of dangerous folk who would rather he didn’t make it. While the City Sleeps: Gyllenhaal Gets His Money Shot in Gilroy’s Debut
You’ll be hard pressed to find a more enjoyably witty criticism of modern exploitative media tactics taken to a new extreme than Dan Gilroy’s viciously adept directorial debut, Nightcrawler. Humanity’s morbid curiosity with the grisly, disturbing, and depraved happenings in the world around us has long tainted the art of journalism and mass media, and has thus been depicted for ages already in the cinema. Gilroy’s film owes as much to Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole (1951) as it does Sidney Lumet’s Network (1976), upping the action ante with the growing Gilroy stamp (his brother directed Michael Clayton and the last Bourne film). And yet, it’s an excitingly well written dark hearted treatise with a vitriolic little statement all its own, a glorious new love letter to the seedy underside of Los Angeles,...

It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have that nice Dougray Scott round, you'd think. You could chat about how things went so wrong for him at the end of Mission: Impossible II and where he keeps his Enigma machine. He’d probably bring a cake. Only, well, not so much in his new home invasione film Tiger House.According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott is jetting out to Cape Town to join a Brit thriller that sees Kaya Scodelario’s injured gymnast face off against a bunch of home invaders. The former Skins actress will attempt to save her boyfriend from the armed gang who have taken him and his family captive. There's no role announced for the once-nearly-Wolverine, but he'll play someone "badass" according to word from the film's camp.Ill Manors’ Ed Skrein is also aboard the film, which has a first-look still of...

Well, this update couldn’t have arrived much more quickly if Frank Martin had been delivering it himself… Hot on the (w)heels of yesterday’s confirmation that the Transporter franchise will indeed be going to reboot route for its new entries, Variety reports that Ill Manors’ Ed Skrein is the man to follow The Stath as the tough-nut central character.Skrein, who also appeared in Game Of Thrones as Daario Naharis (though he’s been replaced for Season 4 by Michael Huisman) will play a younger version of Frank Martin. The new movie will serve as an origin story for the man, which includes his interactions with his father. The producers, which include Luc Besson, are apparently looking for someone notable to take that role.“We searched everywhere to find a fresh face who had the potential to become an action movie star and we’ve found the right match with Ed Skrein,...

Former "Game of Thrones" star Ed Skrein will take over the role of Frank Martin in the $30 million reboot of the "Transporter" franchise at EuropaCorp.
Jason Statham played the role in the previous three films, while Chris Vance took on the role in the TV series version. This proposed new trilogy of films features a younger Frank Martin which 30-year-old Skrein will now take on.
Though he's had roles in films like "Ill Manors," "The Sweeney" and "Piggy," Skrein is probably best known for his work in the role of Tyroshi warrior and Daenerys love interest Daario Naharis in the most recent season of "Game of Thrones".
Skrein played the role in the final three episodes of the third season, but isn't returning to the role for the upcoming fourth season. Michiel Huisman is now taking over that part.

At public school he threw a chair through a window. At Oxford he took on the black-tie brigade. Now Riz Ahmed is ready to shake up the film industry. But first he puts us right on a few things
Riz Ahmed is talking so fast, I can't keep up. He has opinions on everything, and he hurls them at you so enthusiastically, so ferociously, that before long you feel battered. Within seconds, he has taken me on a global tour of his favourite cities. New York? "It's become so gentrified that it's lacking in soul." London? "The most gloriously eclectic city in the world." Tokyo? "Everyone's beautiful, everything's futuristic, but it's ethnically homogeneous."
Then he's on to his theory about why London has such a thriving indie arts scene (because the mainstream is so establishment), why Mo Farah represents all that's great about Britain, the impact of cuts in arts funding for disadvantaged inner-city kids…...

Sure, the Academy Awards is just a few sleeps away but many award-giving bodies are still handing out trophies. Most recently, the London Critics' Circle gave out their kudos with "Amour," "Rust and Bone," and "The Imposter" taking home the major awards.
In the acting categories, Joaquin Phoenix beat out rival Daniel Day-Lewis ("Lincoln") for his brave performance in "The Master." Philip Seymour Hoffman was also honored from the movie with a Best Supporting Actor win, while Emmanuelle Riva took home the Best Actress award for her memorable performance in "Amour."
The only one constant winner during our trek to the Oscars is Anne Hathaway, also taking home the Best Supporting Actress trophy for "Les Miserables."

Visions of the American apocalypse, camp tough guys, and teen stars ruining their clean-cut reputations … it's been quite a year on the big screen
Wrecked America
Sure, the Mayans were wrong, but turns out we're off to hell in a handcart anyway. From Beasts of the Southern Wild to Bombay Beach, Killing Them Softly to The Queen of Versailles, Hollywood took us on a guided tour of a land blighted by ecological and economic collapse. Be sure to stop in at the gift shop on your way out.
Dogs in peril
Last year was vintage for big-screen mutts, with pooches stealing the show on The Artist, and making the posters for Hugo and Young Adult. Call it karma, then, that 2012 has metaphorically drowned Uggie's puppies. Bonnie the shih tzu was snatched in Seven Psychopaths, Poppy the terrier abducted in Sightseers. But they get off lightly compared with Fanny the springer spaniel in The Hunt.
