Forty years ago Sal Mineo's Nephew (who under the Sicilian code of "Omerta") only reluctantly shared the following true account of the murder and it is even more sordid than the one that was contrived at the time... and it's doubtful the LAPD ever knew the whole story themselves. It was in fact a contract killing ordered by a well-known but deeply-closeted, alcoholic older actor that Sal had recently spurned as a lover. Through their classic Sicilian connections the Mineo family quickly knew who the killer was -and also who hired him- and within 72 hrs. the murderer met a swift and equally classic fate. Then the family waited a full year to exact ultimate justice on the man who had Sal killed; and on the exact date of Sal's death that actor too died in what was officially deemed an accident, but in reality was a final vendetta. As for the con who later confessed to the crime, he too was part of the ploy and was paid by the Mineo family to "close" the case forever.
