Struggling to create a narrative style for gamers already well-seasoned by the 'Doom' franchise, and a gaming market saturated with first-person shooters, creators Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin have largely credited The Last Boy Scout (1991) (released in a 90's film market similarly saturated with 'buddy cop' action movies) with inspiring the game's "self-aware" tone and style.
